In the text, Global Health Care, you will be introduced to diverse healthcare issues and systems from multiple perspectives. Using a sociocultural framework, we will investigate how global and national economics, politics, media, medicine, the military, and healthcare agencies influence our environmental choices, our treatment of animals, and personal lifestyle choices for health and wellness. In the text, New Killer Diseases, you will explore the history and nature of germs biologically, how the disease has been treated medically, and how a disease is experienced personally. (More recent resources are noted for your additional review, below). In the text, LAB 257, you will be introduced to one of the very first BioLevel Laboratories in the United States designed to study our most virulent germs for two purposes: for better health and for biological warfare. In the text, Millions Saved, you will review the many success stories in global health. Note: These texts will be referenced in Discussions and Assignments below as GHC, NKD, LAB, and MS. In addition to the study of global healthcare systems, disease epidemiology and germ research laboratories, we will explore healthcare controversies in nutrition, vaccination, drugs, alternative medicine, environmental toxicity and climate change. Offer thoughts on global infectious 5 diseases…and how infectious diseases relate to you, in the United States. 2/6 #1 U.S. Public Health Tool: Vaccines: The Greater Good Vaccines have been both a great success globally and challenged for “vaccine injuries” in other parts of the world. Dr. Edward Jenner is considered the “Father of Vaccination” in the late 1790’s. However, many years before, both China and India had come up with the concept of “Variolization” where people were infected people with a less virulent version of the viral disease. They hypothesized this would make them “immune” to the more deadly virulent version of the disease. Understanding “virulence”, however, was still in its infancy. Dr. Jenner, an English physician, kept 10 years of meticulous medical Case Study notes on infected Smallpox patients as he made his rounds in the community as a physician…as per their recovery, or not. He also kept related notes on how local English Milkmaids, infected with Cowpox from milking cows…seemed “immune” to getting Smallpox. Dr. Jenner decided to launch an experiment. Dr. Jenner asked the permission of a family who worked for him on his farm to use their 8-year-old son as a “test case” to see if he had successfully found a “cure” for Smallpox. The family agreed. Their 8yr old son was given “Cowpox”. and after a period of time…given “Smallpox”. The young boy, survived Small pox. Dr. Jenner then inoculated his own son. Both boys died at the age of 19 from Tuberculosis. In 1954, young children received 4 vaccines. Today, in 2017 children receive 65 vaccine shots by the time they are 18. There has been an increase in “vaccine injuries”….an unofficial term…used to describe subsequent correlative ill effects after receiving a vaccine—sometimes within hours, others within a few months. The debate revolves around the Public Health initiative and legal requirement of getting vaccinated to provide “herd immunity” to the Greater Good. Other concerns issue 6 relate to the lack of research on the safety of Thimerasol (a form of mercury) as a vaccine preservative and Aluminum to keep the vaccine from being eliminated from the body (toxic in animal studies).
