Where hope lives. - The Home for Little Wanderers

Where hope lives.
2007 Annual Report
Where
hope lives.
ABOUT THE HOME
Growing up can be difficult for any child. However, most children have guidance, encouragement, a
secure home, a loving family and friends. Some aren’t so lucky. Many of the children and teenagers who
come to The Home for Little Wanderers (The Home) have had devastating experiences with abuse and
neglect; many struggle with substance abuse; almost all are in emotional turmoil with little hope for the
future.
At The Home, we strive on a daily basis to bring that hope back into their lives, providing not only
immediate protection, but preparing them for meaningful and productive futures. If we can break the
cycle of abuse, we are not only saving one life, but are literally helping generations to come.
The Home has been part of the Massachusetts landscape for over 200 years, making it the oldest agency
of its kind in the nation. Originally founded as an orphanage in 1799, The Home today plays a leadership
role in delivering services to thousands of children and families each year through 20 innovative programs
that include early intervention, residential care, special education, adoption, foster care, clinical and family
support and community-based services.
The guiding principle at The Home is our belief in the right of all children to be safe, nurtured and
developed to reach their full potential. Time and again, we are reminded that although seemingly
insurmountable obstacles are sometimes placed in their way, children’s resilience, together with support
from caring adults, can make anything possible.
From the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board
Dear Friends,
Where Hope Lives is the theme of this Annual
Report and, once again, we’ve had a year of witnessing hope restored to so many of the children
and families that passed through our doors. These
are our successes, why we do what we do.
But we’ve had other successes this past year also.
Fiscal 2007—year two of our Strategic Plan—has
been a remarkable period for The Home. We’ve
hit various milestones and feel that we’ve truly
moved the organization to a new level.
In March, we learned that we were the only agency
in Boston to be awarded an $800,000 contract by
the United Way to lead the four-year pilot for its
new initiative, the Early Childhood System of Care.
This is a wonderful testament to the emphasis The
Home has placed on its work in early childhood
development.
May was an especially busy month. We had the
opportunity to thank the Bilezikian Family
Foundation and the White Family Foundation for
their generous contributions to the Baird Center,
our residential and day school treatment program
in Plymouth. We dedicated the Bilezikian Respite
Center and we broke ground on the White House,
the first of five new residential facilities.
At the end of May we held our annual Voices &
Visions gala fundraiser featuring the visual arts and
creative writing of some of the youngest children
in our care. The event broke all records, attracting
over 900 guests and generating $1 million for use in
our 20 programs. Voices & Visions has become a
fixture on the Boston fundraising circuit and we
look forward to even better results at the 2008 event.
Early in the fiscal year we held the second annual
luncheon for members of our Cornerstone Society,
a donor group that has supported The Home for
20 years or more. It is always such a pleasure to
honor these loyal donors; the continuity of their
generosity is so important to our children.
And last, but by no means least, in FY 2007 our
Board of Directors approved our plans to move
ahead with a capital campaign that will include
the building of a new Children’s Center in Jamaica
Plain. There will be more news about that as we
move into 2008.
We can’t stress enough that our many achievements
would not have been possible without the support
and caring of our donors, our Board of Directors
and our dedicated staff and volunteers. Thank you
to all who have made this such a successful year.

New Doors Open for Will
Will was two and a half years old when he said the
word “Mommy” for the first time. Like all doting
mothers, Will’s mom was elated. “My heart just
melted when he said the word,” Kate said. But she
is aware this could have taken much longer without
the help of The Home’s early childhood programs.
Will, a shy and sweet natured boy, had delays in
his development and was diagnosed with pervasive
developmental disorder (PDD), a condition within
the autism spectrum. Kate noticed Will was behind
with his language and walking when he was 18
months old, and he was referred to the Boston
Early Intervention (BEI) program. He subsequently
had weekly meetings with a Developmental
Specialist, a Speech and Language Pathologist and
an Occupational Therapist, and also attended
full-time childcare at The Home’s Parents’ Center.
“When I first heard the word autism I was very
worried, but I learned that there are different
degrees of autism and that Will’s was on the
milder side. Early intervention really helped this
timid little boy interact with the other kids and
communicate much more.”
“Will’s face lit up when it was time for him to go
to BEI or the Parents’ Center,” Kate said. “It
helped that the staff from both programs knew
each other and knew all about Will’s progress and
goals. We were all on the same page, which was
comforting.”
Will is now in preschool and continues to make
enormous progress. His use of language has
improved: he knows the whole alphabet and can
spell and write his name. He has two friends at
school and talks about them frequently. A big
achievement last summer was conquering the
demon in his mouth—no longer having hysterics
every time he saw a toothbrush! “Looking at him
now, it’s hard to believe there was a time when he
couldn’t communicate with us,” said Kate.
EARLY CHILDHOOD
Laying a strong foundation
The Home’s early childhood programs are designed
to ensure the healthy emotional, mental and social
development of children by providing support and
resources for families at risk, and by working to
stabilize each child’s family environment.
Medical diagnoses such as pervasive developmental
delays and environmental situations such as poverty,
abuse, or single or no parent families have a
detrimental affect on a child’s ability to succeed in
school and, therefore, in life. Research shows that
early intervention and therapeutic services can help
overcome these risk factors and ensure children
are ready for school—academically, mentally,
behaviorally and socially. There is a large void in
these types of services and The Home is committed
to answering this need and preparing our youngest
population to succeed in school, regardless of the
risk factors they face.
The Home operates a number of programs
specifically designed to meet the needs of very
young children and their families, including
Boston Early Intervention, The Parents’ Center and
the Preschool Outreach Program. The children
we serve are diverse across ethnic, cultural and
socio-economic status. Services span the continuum
from parent education and support groups to early
intervention work in the classroom and home of
the child, and a community-based mental health
program. The Home is in the planning stages of an
innovative Early Childhood Center that will allow
us to serve more children by expanding specialized
services.
Prevention services include social skills groups for
children, mother/child socialization groups and
parent skills training. In addition, The Home offers
training and consultation on social and emotional
competence for teachers of early childcare and
education in Boston.
The Home’s focus on the importance of prevention
and early childhood care was recognized this year
with the award of an $800,000 contract by the
United Way to lead the four-year pilot for its new
initiative, the Early Childhood System of Care. We
now head a community collaborative of agencies
providing myriad services to families.
“
Early intervention really helped this timid little boy interact
with the other kids and communicate more.

Perserverence Pays Off
Caroline* was 14 years old when she was first
referred to the Children’s Community Support
Collaborative. As a young child, Caroline experienced significant abuse and witnessed severe
domestic violence directed toward her mother by
her biological father. At the time of referral,
Caroline was extremely depressed and at risk for
self-harm. Her interaction with her mother was
frequently accompanied by significant verbal and
physical aggression. Caroline also seemed to have
serious organizational problems that were negatively
impacting her ability to complete her schoolwork.
Caroline’s treatment at the Collaborative proceeded
across multiple service levels over the next five
years, including meetings in the home and intensive
parent coaching. Outreach Counselors also met
with Caroline in an attempt to get her engaged in
recreational activities in her community to help
reduce some of the tension in the home. In spite
of these intensive interventions, the continued
level of verbal and physical aggression in the home,
in conjunction with Caroline’s refusal to attend
school, ultimately lead to the decision to bring her
into one of the Collaborative’s residential beds.
While in placement, staff worked intensely with
Caroline on developing alternative ways of coping
with her anger. She continued to attend her
community-based school and, for the first time,
was able to explore some of the pain of her early
history in individual treatment. Gradually over
the next year, and with continuing support from
the Collaborative, Caroline increased the number
of nights spent at home. During particularly
challenging moments, staff would travel to the
family’s home late into the evening to help family
members successfully negotiate conflict. With the
support of the entire Collaborative team, Caroline
was ultimately able to graduate from high school.
She moved into the dorms of a local college last
fall where she is receiving the support she needs
around her learning disability. She plans on being
a physical therapist.

FAMILY, SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY SERVICES
Building a strong system of support
Recent research recognizes the essential interdependence of children, families and community.
A healthy child is the product of a supportive family, and families faced with substantial social and
economic stressors are strained to provide adequate
environments for children without the help of
responsive communities.
The Home operates several programs in which
clinical mental health services are provided to
children and families in community-based settings
such as public schools, hospitals, a children’s
mental health clinic, community organizations and
children’s homes. Several of these programs are
designed to work with children and their families
before it is necessary to remove the children from
their homes. They are intended to stabilize families
in crisis, helping them to manage the stressors in
their lives in ways that are not harmful to their
children.
Examples of The Home’s programs in this area
include Safe-at-Home, the Therapeutic AfterSchool Program (TASP), the Children’s Community
Support Collaborative, the Child and Family
Counseling Center and Family Networks. Clients
are referred to these programs through the
Department of Social Services, the Department
of Mental Health, the Department of Public
Health and the Department of Education.
Safe-at-Home is a family stabilization program
offering clinical mental health services to families in
their homes and in the emergency rooms of three
Boston/Cambridge hospitals, with the goal of
preventing children from psychiatric hospitalization.
TASP provides a safe, supportive, structured and
therapeutic setting where youth can work on
developing appropriate social and interpersonal
skills. The Collaborative provides innovative and
effective wrap-around child, family and community
services to some of the Commonwealth’s most
challenged and challenging youth. The Child and
Family Counseling Center is a mental health clinic
providing individual, group and family treatment,
psychological and neuropsychological testing,
medication evaluation, prescription and follow-up,
substance abuse counseling, and community and
school consultation on mental health. The Family
Networks program is a partnership with the Park
Street Department of Social Services (DSS) to
foster and protect permanent families, create lifelong connections and community supports for
children and ensure families are involved in the
decision making process.
The goal of all The Home’s community-based
programs is to ensure that children live in safe and
loving homes and to assist families in the care and
support of their children.
“
The Collaborative’s ability to partner with Caroline
”
and her family was key in helping her move towards her goal.

More Than Just a Job
Like many people, Jimmerall Jones’ day begins with
waking up the kids, getting them washed, clothed,
fed and ready for school. The big difference here,
though, is that these aren’t his kids—at least not in
the usual sense. Jimmerall is a child care supervisor
at the Knight Children’s Center, one of The
Home’s residential and special education facilities,
and this is how his normal workday begins.
Ten years ago, Jimmerall was at a crossroads in his
life; he was in school, working toward a “future”
but with no real idea what that future might be.
He was encouraged by a friend, who at the time
was also on the staff at The Home, to try working
with children. “You’ll be great at it,” he was told.
A very skeptical Jimmerall followed this advice
and, almost from day one, knew he had found his
true calling.
“Many of the kids have serious obstacles to overcome,” says Jimmerall. “And they’d like to be
anywhere but here in school doing as they’re told.
It’s my job to reason with them, get them to work
out for themselves the benefits of being here, and
to understand the consequences of short changing
themselves on this part of their lives.”
According to Jimmerall, the most challenging part
of his job is teaching adults—parents and other
caregivers—how to behave with children: how to
accept that a child’s mind can be scattered, and
how to avoid frustration when everything is not
going perfectly.
But far and above any challenge the job presents is
the satisfaction Jimmerall gets from seeing a child
grow; meeting former residents out and about in
the community, perhaps with children of their
own, and having so many of them come back to
the Center, just to say hello and report on their
progress. “This job has enriched my life beyond
measure,” says Jimmerall.
RESIDENTIAL AND SPECIAL EDUCATION
Providing safety, stability and structure
The Home’s residential program portfolio consists
of several “high-end” programs that serve children
between the ages of 5 and 16 who have been
removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect
and who typically have significant behavioral or
mental health concerns. The residential programs
are staff-intensive environments that provide
services 24 hours a day, year-round. Each residential
treatment program houses a private, state-approved
special needs school attended by day students from
various communities, as well as the children living
at the program.
The Baird Center, which is located on fifty acres
of wooded land beside a pond, also operates a
planned respite center for youth from Southeastern
Massachusetts. This facility was dedicated in 2007
and named the Bilezikian Respite Center for the
Bilezikian Family Foundation grant that made it
possible. The Home’s STARR (Stabilization,
Assessment and Rapid Reintegration) program is
run out of the Longview Farm facility and provides
care and assessment services to youth from the
Department of Social Services Arlington and
Framingham areas.
In addition, The Home operates group homes for
young people ages 8 - 18 who have progressed to a
level of care that is preparing them to return to a
community setting, whether it’s their family, foster
care or adoption.
Residents at both Roxbury House and Harrington
House attend local public schools. Roxbury House
provides adolescent boys with a transition from a
more structured residential facility to a family
setting; Harrington House is a family-oriented
program focused on longer-term stabilization for
younger children who have experienced trauma.
The Home’s landmark facility in Jamaica Plain,
the Knight Children’s Center, provides treatment
for emotionally and behaviorally disturbed children
in the residential facility and school, as well as in
the homes of participating families.
The Home’s residential programs comprise the
Baird Center and Baird Group Home in Plymouth,
Longview Farm and Clifford School in Walpole,
and Harrington House, the Knight Children’s
Center and Roxbury House in Boston. Common to
all the residential programs is the goal of facilitating
the children’s return to their families or another
appropriate environment as quickly as possible.
Whenever possible, families are involved in the
treatment planning and activities of the children.

Mother and Friend to Many
Joyce Lawrence has been a foster parent since 2000.
Originally interested in the Boston’s Hope program
in Roxbury, she now works with the difficult
population of teen girls in The Home’s Intensive
Foster Care program. “These girls arrive with many
challenges, including low self-esteem and lack of
direction,” says Joyce. Using her experience as a
Teen Parent Advisor and with the Boston Public
School System, as well as her love for children,
Joyce is able to help them reach their full potential.
She balances holding the kids accountable with
allowing them to be typical teenagers.
Joyce challenges these young women to set goals
for themselves and then helps them map out a plan
to achieve those goals. She believes, first and
foremost, you need a good education to succeed in
the world. She is a very strong educational advocate
and constantly pushes her girls to push themselves,
while providing them with all the necessary tools
and connections to be successful. Knowing that
a lot of these young women will need to be selfsufficient when they leave her, Joyce tries to teach
them necessary life skills.
One recent example of Joyce’s influence is Khadijah,
a young woman who entered The Home’s Intensive
Foster Care program three years ago at the age of
15. Khadijah struggled with a number of foster
placements before finally meeting up with Joyce.
Although always a responsible student, Khadijah
still needed that extra push to believe in herself and
reach her full potential. Joyce worked continually
with her on her educational needs and encouraged
her to be better than she thought she could be.
The care and attention has paid off. Khadijah was
accepted into The Home’s Academic Support for
College & Life program at Pine Manor College
and is on her way to a bright and promising
future.
Joyce has been a mother, a friend, an advocate and a
life-long connection that our teen girls are fortunate
to have. That she is appreciated is demonstrated
again and again by all the girls who return to her
for the holidays and in the summer.
ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE
Finding a place to call home
In all its work, The Home’s ultimate goal is to keep
families unified and children safe and in their own
communities. When that is not immediately
possible, we provide the children with a safe and
temporary placement, close to their communities,
with the goal of timely reunification. In cases
where reunification is not recommended, we work
to find the children an alternative, high-quality
placement and/or lifelong community connections,
and provide ongoing services to ensure permanency.
The Home’s Intensive Foster Care (IFC) program
offers specialized care for children with emotional,
behavioral and medical issues, developmental
disabilities, and pregnant or parenting teenagers.
IFC also transitions children from residential
treatment to foster care and provides additional
support to foster parents. The program incorporates
Boston’s Hope, a model program designed to
provide stability for children in foster care through
the creation of an intergenerational community.
Included is affordable housing for 8 foster families
and 31 units for seniors. The hub of Boston’s Hope
is a multicultural arts center that gives the children
access to music and art and the opportunity to play
and learn together. Plans are underway to provide
formal after-school activities for neighborhood
children, as well as those in foster care.
“
The Home operates a full-service Adoption
Program, placing infants, children identified internationally, and waiting older children from the
foster care system. The infant/domestic adoption
services include identified, open, and interstate
adoptions. Internationally, we work with selected
agencies to place children from Asia, Central and
South America, India and Eastern Europe.
The waiting children program works in conjunction
with the Department of Social Services (DSS) to
place children of all ages. An often-overlooked
population, these are children who have been
removed from their biological families because of
abuse or neglect and are currently in the custody
of DSS. Most of these children, who are predominantly 5 - 11 years of age, reside in foster homes,
while some live in residential programs. All of
them, though, hope that someday they will find a
stable, loving home environment.
As part of our LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
Transgender & Questioning) Services Program, we
also facilitate the recruitment of LGBT families for
adoption and foster care.
One of the keys to being an effective foster parent is
the kids for where
accepting

they are now, not where you think they should be.

A Life Turned Around
Many vulnerable youth owe their renewed sense
of self and restored hope to a tireless and generous
counselor and mentor named Audrey Porter.
Herself a survivor of life on the streets in Boston’s
combat zone, Audrey is now the assistant director
of the My Life My Choice project, as well as
working for various state agencies who deal with
young people at risk for sexual exploitation.
Because of her own experiences, Audrey understands the allure of the “glamorous” life that the
pimps promise: the money, the jewelry, the furs
and, above all, the acceptance. In her visits to
group homes, schools, and sometimes jail cells,
she is able to be very up front with the kids. “I tell
them, what they are being told is a lie. They are
being deceived and manipulated. They may think
they are choosing the life for themselves but
they’re not—they’re being coerced. Once in, they
are putting themselves in danger every single day.
And getting out is not easy.”
Audrey turned her own life around by way of
treatment programs for drug addiction. “It was a
blessing in disguise; once I was free of drugs, I
couldn’t live ‘the life’ any longer.” In those days,
there was no My Life My Choice, no vans touring
the neighborhood hangouts offering a safe haven
for these victims, no one to explain that there were
alternatives.
Today, Audrey is dedicated to her work and “her
girls,” as she describes them. “I believe everything
happens for a reason: I had to go through what I
did in order to be able to offer help to these kids I
see every day.”
YOUTH IN TRANSITION
Charting a path to independence
Throughout its long history, The Home has
developed a reputation for its ability to adapt to
the changing needs of society and to address the
impact of those changes on the lives of children
and families. Most young people have supportive
families to turn to for a place to live, financial
support, and general guidance as they get ready for
the transition to college and adulthood. However,
many do not, including most of the youth who
come through the doors of The Home. One of
the key challenges facing child welfare agencies
today is how to fill the gap and adequately prepare
those who have grown up “in the system” for a
meaningful and productive adult life.
In looking at this challenge, The Home chose
several key underserved areas on which to focus
its innovative programs for youth in transition:
independent living, including supportive living
tools for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender
youth; college preparation for young women leaving
foster care; and preventing prostitution in teenage
girls.
The Home’s Coldwell Banker Independent Living
Program in Norwood comprises both an intensive
pre-independent group home and supervised
apartments. Waltham House provides a safe and
supportive living environment for up to 12 lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning
(LGBTQ) youth ages 14 - 18. This group home
is the first residential facility of its kind in New
England, and the only home to exist for LGBTQ
youth outside of New York City or Los Angeles.
The Home also runs an LGBTQ Services program
that provides training, technical assistance, consultation and support to staff and programs who seek
to provide culturally competent services to lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth
and their Everhfamilies.
In conjunction with Pine Manor College in
Chestnut Hill, The Home launched Academic
Support for College & Life, a one-year program
designed to assist young women making the
transition from “dependent care” status in the child
welfare system to an independent life in the community. Up to ten students have the opportunity
to live on the all-women campus while receiving
college preparatory instruction, and clinical, social,
vocational and daily living supports.
There are an estimated 300,000 sexually exploited
children in the US, with an average age of
recruitment between 13 and 16. The Home, in
conjunction with the Department of Social Services
and other organizations in Boston, operates My
Life My Choice, a program to provide young
people with the skills and knowledge they need to
avoid this profoundly destructive lifestyle.
“
I learned about ‘the life’ the hard way.
My goal is to help others avoid that lesson.
