Dear Friend,
f this year’s annual report issue of Amazing Kids
were to have a theme, it might be dreams. The
Children’s Institute realized a number of its dreams
over the past fiscal year; a supportive group of donors
helps our patients and students live their dreams on an
ongoing basis; and a young man had his Christmas
dream fulfilled through the generosity of two very
special donors.
I
In this annual report we look back on the activities of
The Children’s Institute during fiscal year 2006, the
period of July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006. Words and
photographs can relate the facts, but nothing can
capture the energy and excitement that abounds at The
Children’s Institute. Whether visiting The Hospital, The
Day School or Project STAR, one can’t help but feel
inspired by our Amazing Kids and our Amazing Place.
1
On the pages that follow, you’ll learn about specific
physical and programmatic improvements that The
Children’s Institute made over the past fiscal year. And
you’ll also learn how your support of our organization
enables us to advance our mission of anticipating, meeting and exceeding the rehabilitation needs of children
with special needs and their families.
You’ll also meet Adam, a very special young man whose
life was changed unexpectedly at the age of 4. Adam and
his family have weathered the resulting uncertainty for
years. After a particularly serious setback last summer,
Adam is now an inpatient at The Children’s Institute
where he and his family have found comfort, assistance
and encouragement. They also found that donors can
make wishes come true, adding to Adam’s happiness
and healing.
The Children’s Institute’s activities and achievements
over the past year lay the foundation for continued
progress, and the year ahead promises even more. We’re
glad you’re part of the dream team traveling with us as
we reach even greater heights in helping our Amazing
Kids. Thank you for your support of our journey.
Sincerely,
Ann M. McGuinn

Year in Review:
Past Projects
with
Forward Motion
With each passing year, The Children’s Institute solidifies its
place in the community as a leader committed to improving the
lives of children with special needs and their families. Fiscal year
2006 (July 1, 2005 – June 30, 2006) was no exception. As part of
an ongoing renovation project, The Children’s Institute underwent physical and programmatic changes to help keep pace with
the evolving needs of those it serves.
“In my 29 years at The Children’s Institute, 2006
has been one of the more exciting,” said David Miles,
president and CEO, The Children’s Institute. “In fact,
it’s probably the most exciting time in our history.
We’re proud to have introduced so many essential
programs and services to residents of our area
and beyond.”
High on the list of notable achievements, The Day
School at The Children’s Institute opened two of an
eventual five classrooms specially designed for
students with autism. The classrooms are in response
to the increasing number of children diagnosed with
autism and autism-related disorders. The classrooms
are situated in a pod within The Day School and
feature small class sizes, quiet areas and a multisensory room, all of which provide students with the
greatest chances of success.
Inpatient and outpatient therapy space doubled
during the past year to include two new outpatient
physical therapy gyms and 12 new speech/language
workrooms. Since they’re often used in tandem,
physical, occupational and speech/language therapy
spaces have all been relocated to one area of the
building. The addition of two Activities of Daily Living
apartments means that patients can have a real-life
setting in which to practice what they’re learning
during therapy sessions.
The only one of its kind in North America,
The Children’s Institute’s Prader-Willi Syndrome/
Behavioral Disorders Program required a treatment
space as amazing as its patients. A new, dedicated,
inpatient unit provides comfortable space for the
medical, behavioral, psychiatric and behavioral treatments necessary for better health and ultimate survival
of patients.
Last year, The Children’s Institute joined
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, another
pioneer in pediatric healthcare, in the development of
the area’s first Pediatric Cardiac Recovery Program.
Healthcare specialists from both organizations focus
on the unique rehabilitation needs of pediatric cardiac
patients and work to identify possible complications
early and make long-term improvements. Following
cardiac surgery at Children’s Hospital, patients are
discharged to The Children’s Institute to begin longterm cardiac rehabilitation.
Other highlights from fiscal year 2006 include the
following:
• Austin’s Playroom, a gift from the Mario
Lemieux Foundation Playroom Project, opened
on the new inpatient unit
• a chronic pain management program was introduced to provide inpatient and outpatient
rehabilitation therapy to children and adolescents afflicted by debilitating, chronic pain
• the respite program was expanded to provide
families of children with disabilities an option
for highly trained specialists to provide care during periods of conflicting demands for families
• the Shady Avenue lobby entrance to The
Children’s Institute was renovated, providing a
welcoming setting for patients and visitors
• a spacious Family Lounge was created on the
new inpatient unit, providing many comforts of
home including a TV, videos, a computer and
a library
“After careful evaluation, The Children’s Institute
determined that these programs and services best suit
the needs of our community,” explains David. “Our
goal is to enable children and young adults with
special needs reach their fullest potential. These new
and adapted programs give them and their loved ones
the opportunity to accomplish amazing things.”

How do you measure the
worthiness of a dream?
4
Each of us, regardless of age,
gender or income, has dreams.
Maybe it’s exceeding a sales target
at work. Or acing an exam in night
school. Or finally saving enough
money to fund that long-desired
vacation. Others may encourage
us, applaud our success, even
reward us. And when we achieve
that dream, nothing compares to
the sense of pride we feel.
But what if the dreams
were different?
What if the dream was to take
a step? Or to raise a ball over your
head? Or to tie your own shoes?
Keefe Ellis, member, Board of Directors and chair of the Annual
Fund, and Michael Oberschelp, 17, walk through the hallways of
The Day School where Michael is a student.
‘‘
All you need to do is meet one of our
Amazing Kids and you’re going to
want to help. Who wouldn’t want to
’’
help a child face his or her challenges?
The dreams of the children served by The Children’s
Institute are different from ours, but no less important.
When these Amazing Kids realize a dream, their sense
of accomplishment is even greater than ours, but no
less empowering.
And the worthiness of their dreams can be measured by their smiles. With each step, each new height,
each lace knotted.
“When I see our Amazing Kids smiling, it’s the same
as seeing my own kids smiling and happy,” explains
J. Keefe Ellis Jr., member, The Children’s Institute Board
of Directors. “A smile is universal.”
As chair of The Children’s Institute’s Annual Fund,
Keefe knows the importance of the organization’s
programs and services. He sees the difference The
Children’s Institute makes in the lives of the children it
serves and their families. “We give children – and their
families – hope. Because of The Children’s Institute
these kids will do something better and be more
successful than they would have been otherwise.”
As one of the nation’s premier rehabilitation centers
for children, including those with special needs,
The Children’s Institute provides services through The
Hospital, The Day School and Project STAR.
“The Children’s Institute plays a unique role,” Keefe
notes. “We’re the region’s only provider of medical,
educational and adoption services for children with
special needs. If it weren’t for The Children’s Institute,
the needs of these children would go unmet.”
The cost of providing pediatric care is much higher
than that of adult care. Those costs further increase
when addressing the highly specialized and long-term
needs of the children served by The Children’s Institute.
Often, the expense of raising a child with special needs
exceeds a family’s income. In fact, in fiscal year 2006,
The Children’s Institute provided nearly $3.3 million in
free care.
Approximately 35 percent of children with
disabilities rely on Medicaid for healthcare coverage.
Further complicating the financial situation,
Medicaid reimburses only 77 percent of the cost of
inpatient care at The Children’s Institute and about 53
percent of the cost of outpatient care.
So how can a child realize his dreams if he can’t
access the care he needs?
At The Children’s Institute, the Annual Fund helps to
close the gap between financial need and financial ability.
Each year, generous donors to the Annual Fund provide
support that funds essential programs, specialized equipment and charitable care. In essence, these donors are
helping Amazing Kids to have the tools they need to
realize their dreams.
“I don’t know what the future of healthcare is as
it relates to these specific children,” Keefe says. “They’re
obviously a minority, related to the general population of
children who are treated in the healthcare industry. The
Children’s Institute has a century-old commitment to
taking care of kids who might otherwise slip through the
cracks in the healthcare system. And the Annual Fund
enables us to continue that commitment.”
Donors to the Annual Fund range from elementary
school children who conduct classroom fund-raising competitions, to adolescents who designate The Children’s
Institute as the recipient of their bar and bat mitzvah gifts,
to octogenarians whose ties with The Children’s Institute
are rooted deeply in the history of the organization.
Forms of giving to the Annual Fund include outright
gifts, memorial gifts in memory of loved one, and tribute
gifts that honor a special person or event.
“All you need to do is meet one of our Amazing Kids,”
Keefe says with a smile. “And you’re going to want to
help. Who wouldn’t want to help a child face his or
her challenges?
“You see these kids,” Keefe continues, “and although
many are faced with difficult challenges, they’re always
smiling, and their smiles are infectious.”
And with each smile, a dream is realized. A step taken.
A ball raised. A shoelace tied. Dreams made real by generous donors to The Children’s Institute’s Annual Fund.

Daring to Dream:
One Family’s Journey
Jo Stovich tries to relax on the cushioned window seat of her son
Adam’s dimly lit room on the inpatient unit of The Hospital at
The Children’s Institute. She unfolds a stack of papers that’s marked
with deep creases. Listed is the contact information for numerous
physicians, dozens of hard-to-pronounce medications and pages of
what Jo labels ‘major hospital admissions.’
“This is a summary of Adam’s medical history,” says Jo. “I carry it
everywhere because I never know when I’ll need it. It’s too much to
remember anymore.”
‘‘
It sounds cliché, but The Children’s Institute
is amazing. You can see it in Adam’s face.
This is definitely where we need to be.
’’
Adam was born in 1989. He was a healthy newborn who grew into a healthy, smart little boy. But in
November 1993, Jo heard her 4-year-old son gasping
for breath as he lay in bed one night. She rushed to his
room and found him seizing.
The nightmarish days stretched into weeks and
extended into months. Finally, after months of tests
and failed treatments, physicians diagnosed Adam
with a severe seizure disorder known as LennoxGastaut syndrome. The seizures were frequent – up to
200 a day – and did not respond to medications. Adam
underwent electroencephalograms (EEGs) to measure
the electrical activity of his brain. Initial results
showed the generalization of numerous seizures and
the possibility of severe mental retardation.
“No one knew what caused the seizures or what
would stop them,” remembers Jo. “All they knew was
that he would likely be profoundly retarded as a result
of them.”
Despite the fact that so much was unknown about
Adam’s disorder and his prognosis, the family
remained steadfast in their commitment to keeping
their son active and engaged. He continued to go
camping and fishing with his parents; his sister, Erin,
now 17; and his brother, Brandon, now 13. He played
baseball in the Little League Challenger Division, and
with the help of his dad, Mark, even continued to cut
the grass on a riding lawnmower, which had always
been a favorite outdoor activity.
“Adam has an amazing resiliency about him,” says
Jo. “From the very beginning, he’s always been able
to bounce back.”
But rebounding after an April 2006 hospital admission hasn’t been easy. Adam was hospitalized for three
months while physicians adjusted his medications. He
spent an extensive period in the intensive care unit,
and physicians medicated him to give his tired
body a chance to recover. Because of his prolonged
Buoyed by Two Donors
Adam emerged from his early seizures with moderate retardation accompanied by an anxiety disorder,
disruptive behavior disorder and attention deficit disorder. With no relatives in town, the Canonsburg, Pa.,
family had a limited support system. Jo eventually quit
her job as a preschool teacher to stay at home and care
for her son. She managed his numerous medications,
shuttled him from physician to physician, spent countless nights in the hospital, battled the insurance
company and oversaw Adam’s schooling to ensure
teachers were comfortable handling each of the six
types of seizures he was prone to. For three years she
even monitored his very regimented diet that was
designed to help bring the seizures under control.
hospitalization, Adam’s physical activity was severely
limited. As a result, by the time he was cleared for discharge in July, Adam had lost all muscle control.
Unable to even hold up his head, he was transferred to
The Children’s Institute for rehabilitation.
“I didn’t realize just how bad Adam had gotten
physically until we transferred to The Children’s
Institute,” says Jo. “He was functioning at his full
mental capacity, but physically, he deteriorated
completely. Our focus shifted from Adam’s seizures
to his need to regain his independence.”
Each day, for the past nine months, Adam
has pushed through several hours of physical,
occupational, speech/language and feeding therapies.
7
Adam and his father, Mark, proudly pose for a Christmas Day photo
with Adam’s new, adapted bike – a gift from generous donors to
The Children’s Institute.
8
He’s had to learn to eat again, lift his head to kiss his
family again, extend his arm to shake hands with
visitors again, and move his legs to begin walking with
assistance again.
Accomplishing his goals has been work. Hard
work. To help keep Adam motivated, his mom remains
by his side throughout the week, and his dad takes the
weekend shifts. Erin and Brandon visit weekly to cheer
on their brother’s progress. Additional motivators
include weekend trips home and rides on The
Children’s Institute’s adapted bicycle. He was so
enthralled with the bike that during a December visit
with Santa, the bike was the only Christmas gift Adam
asked for.
However, at nearly $4,000, the bike was beyond
the reach of Adam’s parents. Jo and Mark pressed
Adam for other ideas in hopes that he could be swayed.
Did he want new Walt Disney movies? Puzzles? Singalong CDs? The answer was always the same. “I want
a big bike just like the one in therapy,” Adam said.
On Christmas Day, Adam suffered several seizures
before making the trip home and several more once
arriving home. They drained him. He wasn’t even interested in opening any Christmas gifts – except one.
There, under the family’s Christmas tree, hugged by an
enormous bow, was a big, red bike, “just like the one in
therapy.”
What the Stovichs and Santa couldn’t make
happen, two generous donors to The Children’s
Institute did. With their contributions, these donors —
who hadn’t even met Adam — made a young man’s
dream come true. In fact, not only did they cover the
cost of the bike, they added a horn, flag and helmet.
Despite his fatigue that day, Adam mustered enough
strength for a quick ride before snuggling on the couch
for a Christmas nap.
“Never in a million years did we think that would
happen,” says Jo. “Because of the commitment of The
Children’s Institute staff and the generosity of donors,
Adam can safely ride a bike again. He can get his
exercise and go on family rides again. Nothing could
be better. Nothing could have been more thoughtful.”
Adam recently celebrated his 18th birthday. While
Jo understands that Adam’s prognosis is unknown and
that he may not ever regain all of his mobility, she and
her family are eternally grateful for the improvement
that Adam has made and continues to make while at
The Children’s Institute. He can support himself in the
therapy pool and navigate the halls with his walker.
He’s learning to dress and feed himself again, and of
course, he can now ride his new bike.
“This place changes your life. It’s changed my life,
my husband’s life, and my kids’ lives. And it’s changed
Adam’s life,” says Jo. “He is so well taken care of. It’s
the most awesome staff of doctors, nurses, therapists,
dietary professionals and housekeepers, and all of
them are genuinely his friends. It sounds cliché, but
The Children’s Institute is amazing. You can see it in
Adam’s face. This is definitely where we need to be.”

Summary
Fiscal year 2005-2006 reflects a period of transition as The Children’s Institute
invested heavily in renovating its Squirrel Hill location while introducing new programs and
expanding existing programs. Operating revenues showed an increase over the prior
year of slightly more than 2 percent. Due primarily to significant renovation activities,
operating expenses increased by 5 percent, resulting in a loss from operations.
The demand for The Children’s Institute’s specialty services remained steady in
2005-2006. During the past fiscal year, the inpatient daily census increased slightly as did
inpatient discharges. Due to temporary space constraints created by the renovation
project, The Day School operated slightly below capacity. Continuing its commitment
to the children and families of our region, The Children’s Institute provided nearly $3.3
million in uncompensated care during the past fiscal year.
