Hospitality industry leaders recognize that the Culinary Arts program at South Seattle Community College provides outstanding culinary arts training. Our culinary instructors work closely with the hospitality industry to train students in all facets of food production, including food preparation, service training and hospitality management. Food management classes train students in inventory control, operations analysis, purchasing, productions, supervision, and personal management. Students prepare for careers in dining room service, food production, and supervision for hotel, restaurant, catering, and institutional food service operations. The program provides a realistic learning environment for students. On-site training facilities include a food court and two restaurants – Café Alki, and the Alhadeff Grill, both offering traditional dining. These facilities meet the demands of educational training, accommodate host guest chefs and serve as a demonstration site for industry professionals. Alumni Alumni of the Culinary Arts program at South are working today at the Four Seasons, Serefina, Emerald Cove Catering, the Space Needle and other fine restaurants both locally and nationally. Evan Kim was one of seven students selected worldwide to participate in the first International Tapas Competition in Valladolid, Spain. He is also a Team Gold and Individual Bronze medal winner in ACF Junior Hot Food competitions. Culinary Arts South’s Culinary Arts program offers a five-quarter certificate and six-quarter AAS degrees in Restaurant & Food Service Production, Catering and Banquet Operations, and Food and Wine Pairing. Learning takes place in a realistic environment, where students practice skills in campus dining settings. The AAS-T degree in Culinary Arts is a pathway to South Seattle Community College’s Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree in Hospitality Management. “What excited me about South’s Culinary Arts program was that from day one you are learning in a production environment. Students will learn basic and advanced skills in pastry, specialty baking and decorating. This includes cakes, Danish, French and Swiss pastries, elegant desserts, confections, tortes, fillings, specialty breads, decorating, and sugar and chocolate work.
