Barrie Rattray A champion breeder, trainer, driver and owner, Longford professional Barrie Rattray is without question the greatest all-rounder in the history of Tasmanian harness racing. He has been the leading trainer a record 16 times with more than 1700 winners and has topped the driver’s premiership on 11 occasions, landing 1569 winners, while he represented Australia at the 1993 World Driver’s Championship in Germany. He drove over 100 winners in a season on three occasions and trained over 100 winners four times. Barrie’s list of winners as a trainer or driver reads like a classics datebook. He has won the Tasmanian Pacing Championship three times, four Easter Cups, the George Johnson twice, Dandy Patch twice, the Evicus, Globe Derby and Bandbox four times, Raider Stakes (3), the Granny Smith five times, the Metropolitan Cup (7), Hobart Cup (4), Danbury Park Cup (3), Devonport Cup (4), the Sweepstakes on nine occasions and a Tasmanian Derby and Oaks. Not to mention his numerous cups and classics wins on the mainland. As a breeder Barrie reached the top of the mountain with the mighty Beautide, whose 49 successes included two Inter Dominion Championships, a Miracle Mile and Len Smith Mile. The winner of $2.1 million in stakes, Beautide was named Australian Horse of the Year in 2014 and 2015. Devendra, the winner of two Inter Dominion heats, Pachacuti, Prodigious, Chip And Gale, Bar Ron Boy, Barrington Belle, Biggernbettermax, Alby Albert, Ashkalini, Bettor Draw, Queen Carey, King Carey, Benediction and Death And Taxes have been other top performers bred and raced by Barrie. Three of Barrie’s sons, Gareth, James and Todd, are champion trainer-drivers in their own right. Barrie Rattray is a member of the Tasmanian Harness Hall of Fame.
