2008
Dear Collectors
Welcome to the final Stamp Bulletin for 2008. The year has been an extremely
busy one with Australia involved in a number of major events. I would like to take
this opportunity to thank all our readers for their continued support of Australian
philately, whether it’s through the purchase of Australian stamps to add to a
collection or through valuable feedback and support.
In this edition we ask you to tell us what your favourite stamps were of 2008. A
special voting form is included so you can peruse the stamps from this year and
have your say. Who knows, you may be lucky enough to win the special blocks
of 1931 Kingsford Smith overprinted stamps, valued at around $3,000. Now that
would really make someone’s Christmas!

I am often asked what my favourite stamps were in a given year, and I can
tell you this year is one of the hardest from which to choose a favourite. The
Legends issue each year is hard to go past, as this issue always features great
Australians that have contributed so much to the community – the Australian
Legends of Philanthropy, back in January, are a case in point. The Organ and
Tissue Donation stamp holds a special place in my view, as it’s a great graphical
representation of such a complex issue. I wonder how many people were
reminded to register? Being a dog- lover, the Working Dogs issue has great
appeal, while the Centenary of Scouting brought back fond boyhood memories.
Aren’t stamps great!
One stamp issue more than all others reminded me of how privileged I am
to work in Australia Post in a job that allows me have some influence on the
stamps we produce each year. That issue was Lest We Forget. The stamp launch
I attended at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance was very special. This Bulletin,
of course, also contains images of and information on some great stamp issues
that form the final part of our 2008 program, including the Christmas stamp
issues – Christmas 2008 and Christmas Island Christmas. The stamp issues are
very different in both design and concept, with the traditional Christmas story
told through the Christmas 2008 stamp issue and a Christmas of colour and fun
presented in the Christmas Island stamp issue.
The Australian Film Institute (AFI) ran a poll recently to determine the favourite
Australian film of all time as part of its 50-year celebrations. An issue of five
stamps will be released on the 3 November, featuring the five favourite
Australian films as voted by the public in the poll. Later in the year, and selected
from these five films, Australia’s favourite film will be given a special award at
the AFI Awards ceremony, telecast on the 6th December.
Our 2008 Collection of Australian Stamps includes a unique sheetlet of the 2008
Australian Olympic gold medallists, as well as a single stamp from the
Paralympian of the Year sheetlet. This collection and that of the Australian
territories are a record of Australian culture, special events and anniversaries,
and would be a great family gift for children or grandchildren. In this edition of
the Bulletin there is also a range of gift and Christmas card ideas for the festive
season. A very Merry Christmas to you all,
Noel Leahy, Manager, Philatelic Group

CHRISTMAS 2008
31 OCTOBER 2008
This 2008 Christmas stamp issue continues the tradition of Australian
Christmas stamps featuring religious subjects. Three of this year’s
stamps celebrate the birth of Jesus through images of iconic figures
from the Christmas story and the Nativity. Resembling a three-part
altarpiece when shown together, the stamps combine photographic
and design elements, and draw upon a range of techniques and
artistic influences to offer a modern approach to a traditional story.
1576001 first day cover (gummed)
1576155 aerogramme
The sentiment of the Christmas story is captured in the devotional
expressions and gestures of the figures, inspired by painters such as
Giotto, whose religious frescos often depict people in profile against
shallow architectural backdrops. Giotto – whose paintings have also
featured on stamps – broke from the strict stylisation of medieval
and Byzantine art to introduce human emotion and a quiet realism to
religious art. In these modern stamps it is photography that enables
this expressive dimension and brings the Christmas story to life.
The designer Melinda Coombes creates a calm, contemplative
feeling through visual cues such as circles and arcs, and the use
of classical proportions based on the Golden Mean, considered
particularly pleasing to the human eye. Her design of the 50-cent
stamp radiates out from a shell-like centre, a stylised yet open
spiralling of semicircular forms that cradles the heads of Mary and
Jesus.
Each figure is set against a colourful, decorative backdrop. The floral
appeal of William Morris fabrics adds depth to the areas of flat colour.
Every part of the design incorporates many layers – colour filters, and
photographic, illustrative and tonal layers – that together convey the
joyful spirit of Christmas. A stand-alone alternative stamp recognises
the centuries-old ritual of decorating the home at Christmas, a
tradition continued today by the common practice of adorning our
Christmas trees with festive tinsel, lights and baubles.

CHRISTMAS ISLAND CHRISTMAS
31 OCTOBER 2008
In 1643, the East India Company ship the Royal Mary arrived off the
coast of a remote Indian Ocean island, some 2,600km north-west
of what is now Perth. Captain William Mynors was unable to make
landfall, but he did have the honour of naming Christmas Island for
the day of his arrival – 25 December.
Christmas Tree (50c)
In this design, the Golden Bosunbird wraps its splendid tail, like a
strand of tinsel, around a Christmas tree decorated with seashells,
Red Crabs, and a smiling starfish atop. Christmas Island is noted for
its Red Crabs, which make a spectacular migration in their millions
from the forest to the sea around November each year.
Robber Crab ($1.20)
Christmas Island is the world’s most extensive breeding ground
for Robber Crabs, the largest species of land crab worldwide. As
their name suggests, and the stamp illustrates, they are known for
their thieving habits.

FAVOURITE AUSTRALIAN FILMS
3 NOVEMBER 2008
This stamp issue celebrates Australia’s favourite local films, as
voted for in a competition jointly organised by Australia Post and the
Australian Film Institute (AFI).
The favourite Australian film overall will be announced in
December 2008 at the AFI awards. An embellished sheetlet of
self-adhesive stamps (10 x 55c) celebrating Australia’s favourite
film will be produced after the announcement of the award and
will be available in December (refer to page 10 for details). This is
the first time that an Australian stamp issue and special product
have been produced based on the voting preferences of the
Australian public.
15911126 stamp pack
Today, Australian films are recognised nationally and internationally.
This is a far cry from the situation in 1958 when Australian feature
film production had fallen to an all-time low. The rebirth of the
Australian film industry began in the 1960s. Spurred on by the
newfound Australian nationalism, the Australian Government
established the Experimental Film Fund. In the early 1970s it
established the Australian Film Development Corporation while the
state governments established the likes of the South Australian
Film Corporation.
The earliest film chosen by the public as one of Australia’s favourites
was Gallipoli. Produced in 1981, the film belongs to the group of
films that heralded the renaissance of the Australian film industry in
the 1970s and early 1980s. Although the film explored the country’s
past, its commemoration of the great battle of World War I clearly
still resonates with Australian audiences in 2008.

A range of Australian people and places feature in the other four
films, presenting a diverse picture of our culture. Muriel’s Wedding

portrays an “ugly duckling” leaving behind her country town to
realise her dream of getting married and living in the big city.
By contrast, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert tells of the
adventures of three drag queens in outback Australia.
The Castle takes a humorous look at an Aussie battler’s attachment to
his suburban family home and his triumph over powerful corporate
interests. A very different story of the suburbs is portrayed in
Lantana, which explores four couples in Sydney drawn into a tangled
web of love, deceit, sex and death.

set of self-adhesive
booklets
These films show a huge development from the period in 1958.
Then only 30 films were entered in the documentary, educational,
advertising, experimental, public relations and open categories.
The continuance of the AFI awards over 50 years is testament to
the vitality of the Australian film industry, and the role the AFI has
played in promoting Australian films.
There are six self-adhesive booklets of 10 x 55c (one for each of the
movies and a mixed booklet). There is also a unique self-adhesive
sheetlet format honouring Australia’s favourite film of all time (refer
to page 10 for details).

AUSTRALIA’S FAVOURITE FILM
... but which one will it be?
The spotlight is on Australia’s five favourite films as depicted in our stamp
issue. One of these films will be named Australia’s Favourite Film and presented
with an award at this year ’s Australian Film Institute (AFI) award ceremony in
December 2008. The five Australian films listed were voted by the Australian
public in an online poll jointly organised by Australia Post and the AFI. All are
great films but only one will be officially named Australia’s favourite.
A special embellished self-adhesive sheetlet and sheetlet pack
will be released after the award announcement.

TALKING STAMPS
WITH RICHARD BRECKON
One of the most interesting
aspects of stamp collecting is
learning about stamps that might
have been, but never were.
There have been instances
where circumstances intervened
to prevent a planned stamp issue
from going ahead. Sometimes
the stamps had reached an
advanced stage of production
before being abandoned.
In two instances involving
major sporting events held in
Australia in the past 50 years,
stamps were fully printed
before their planned issue had
to be scrapped: the Melbourne
1956 Olympic Games and the
1987 America’s Cup Defence at
Fremantle, WA.
Melbourne Olympic Games,
1956
When Australia Post began
planning stamps for the 1956
Olympic Games, four values
were envisaged:
• 3½d, basic letter postage
within Australia and to British
Commonwealth countries
• 7½d, basic surface letter
postage to countries outside the
British Commonwealth
• 1s., basic air mail letter
postage to nearer Asian
countries
• 2s., basic air mail letter
postage to most countries.
The 3½d and 7½d stamps were
to be produced by one-colour
recess printing at the Note
Printing Branch, Melbourne.
The 1s. and 2s. stamps
were to involve multi-colour
photogravure production by two
European stamp printers – the
first time since Federation that
Australian stamps had been
produced overseas. Work on
the 3½d stamp commenced
early, as it was to be included
in a commemorative stamp
booklet of 12 and the lead-time
needed to manufacture the
booklet was lengthy. The Olympic
booklet would feature trilingual
inscriptions (English, French and
Spanish) to explain Australian
postal information to Olympic
visitors.
In August 1956, the Federal
Government imposed increases
in postal rates which meant that
basic letter postage would rise
from 3½d to 4d on 1 October
that year. Consequently the
3½d Olympic stamp would be
obsolete for letter postage. The
timing of the rate increase made
it impossible to manufacture
a 4d Olympic stamp booklet
in the available time. Before
being abandoned production
had reached the stage where 18
million 3½d stamps (enough for
1.5 million booklets) had been
printed.
All the stamps were destroyed,
except for two uncut booklet
sheets transferred to the National
Philatelic Collection. In 1987, 40
examples of the unissued 3½d
Olympic stamp were sold in the
Australia Post Archival Sale. (The
3½d stamp is priced at $5,000 in
the Australian Commonwealth
Specialists’ Catalogue.) The other
three stamps in the Olympic set
were not affected by the postal
rates increase and so these
denominations were issued as
planned.
America’s Cup Defence, 1987
The victory of Australia II in the
America’s Cup (1983) meant that
the Cup had been taken away
from the New York Yacht Club
for the first time in 132 years. It
was brought to the Royal Perth
Yacht Club, which arranged for
the first defence of the Cup to
be held at Fremantle in 1987.
Australia Post issued three
stamps in September 1986
commemorating the original
with Triumph ‘83 followed by
another four stamps marking the
America’s Cup in February 1987.
A third stamp issue was planned:
a 36c stamp for basic letter
postage to commemorate the
Cup’s successful defence.
The proposed ‘Victory’ stamp
was a calculated gamble. In
an era when the instant stamp
technology was not available, the
Victory stamp had to be printed
well in advance of the staging
of the first race at Fremantle.
As soon as the victory of the
defender, Kookaburra III, was
confirmed, the stamp would be
distributed for release across
Australia. Unfortunately, it was
not to be. The America’s Cup
was easily won by the San
Diego Yacht Club’s challenger,
Stars and Stripes, and the Cup’s
residency in Australia proved to
be brief.
A small stock of full sheets of
the unissued America’s Cup
Victory stamp were retained in
the National Philatelic Collection.
No examples of the stamp have
been sold to private collectors.
