His first and only Academy Award came in 1951
for grumpy, boozy, skipper of the tug boat “African
Queen”, capping thirty years of stage and film. But
boat captain Charlie Allnut was just one of the
many iconic roles immortalized by this complex
and unique talent. Booze and pals John Huston
and fellow Rat Packers, including Lauren Bacall,
were part of his life that was as colorful as were
his roles on screen. Dead at 57 his legend lives on
in Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo, and
