DAY 1 MONAY JUNE 1st - TOLEDO
After collecting you from Madrid airport we will drive 1 hour south to what was a
great Jewish spiritual center in Europe from the 12th through to the 14th century
Known as the ‘’Jerusalem of Spain’’, we will experience a day in Jewish Toledo as
well as Christian Toledo with it’s famous Gothic architecture and Tagus river.
۞ There were once 10 synagogues in Toledo and now 2 survive
۞ Escuela de Traductores de Toledo (School of Translators) was based here
۞ Toledo was once a very important part of Jewish life in Spain
۞ King Alfonso VI established Toledo as a seat of learning in Spain in 1085

DAY 2 TUESDAY JUNE 2nd- CORDOBA
Today we enjoy the city which was once the biggest in all of Europe and rich in Jewish
Heritage - Cordoba. This UNESCO World Heritage site, with its magnificent monuments and
treasured Jewish quarter,was for many hundreds of years a place where Muslims, Jews and
Christians lived together in relative peace.
۞ During the “Golden Age” Cordoba was a great centre for learning
۞ Cordoba played a pivotal role in the history of Jewish life in the middle ages
۞ Cordoba is home to one of only three pre-expulsion synagogues in Spain
۞ The great court doctor Maimonides was born here and lived in the city

DAYS 3, 4 & 5 - GRANADA, MOROCCO & GIBRALTAR

DAY 3 WEDNESDAY 3rd JUNE - GRANADA
Granada was inhabited by Jews from the earliest times; hence it was also called "Villa de
Judios". Set against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountain range this historic city was
the place where Jewish history was to change forever in 1492. Granada is a fantastic place
to explore on foot, with it’s endless curious passageways and streets.
۞ Discover the stunning Moorish Palace of the Alhambra - a UNESCO site
۞ In the 11th century Granada was home to the Shmuel HaNagid's Yeshiva
۞ In 1492 the decree expelling the Jews from Spain was signed here
۞ Our evening meal will be an authentic gourmet dinner typical of Andalucía

DAY 4 THURSDAY 4th JUNE - TANGIERS
Many a tour will take you into two countries but few will take you to two continents; today we
will reach the Northern coast of Africa and magical and mystical Morocco. Our fast ferry will
whisk us through the straits of Gibraltar where the Atlantic ocean meets the Mediterranean
sea, and shoals of dolphins roam, before reaching the ancient port of Tangiers.
۞ A panoramic tour will give us an overview of the vibrant and bustling city
۞ A walking tour of the Kasbah and Medina will evoke centuries of history
۞ We will meet local Jews and discover the only remaining old synagogue
۞ Our local experts will tell us stories of the history of the Jews in Tangiers

DAY 5 FRIDAY 5th JUNE - GIBRALTAR
Today we will visit the British Colony of Gibraltar. Known as “The Rock” Gibraltar is home to
a thriving Jewish community as well as the only apes on Mainland Europe. Gibraltar may
only be 2.3 square miles in size but it has an incredible and fascinating history - in fact the
remnants of neanderthal man found here are amoungst the oldest to be found anywhere.
۞ We will take a trip up the rock to meet the apes and take in the stunning views
۞ Enjoy a visit to the synagogues and meet local Jewish representatives
۞ We do a little shopping on Gibraltar’s famous Main Street - it’s tax free!
۞ In the evening we will head back into Spain and inland to the stunning Seville

DAY 6 SATURDAY 6th JUNE - SEVILLE
DAYS 6, 7 & 8 - SEVILLE, LISBON, TOMAR & COIMBRA

After breakfast we have the day to discover the wonderful city of Seville. Situated on the
banks of the Guadalquivir River Seville was originally founded as a Roman city and now
home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Seville is bursting with antique charm and
stunning architecture with varied influences.
۞ The Alcazar Palace is still used as a residence for the Spanish Royal Family
۞ We will visit the mystical Barrio de Santa Cruz area - the former Jewish Quarter
۞ A must see is Grand Plaza de Espana the pavilion of the great 1929 exhibition
۞ The evening will bring an authentic Spanish Flamenco show to remember

DAY 7 SUNDAY 7th JUNE - LISBON
After breakfast we make our way to Portugal and our first stop will be Lisbon. Here
we will take a walking tour which take in many important sites building a picture for
you of a thriving Jewish community. There have been many recent discoveries in
Portugal which seem to prove Jewish people lived here as early as 390 C.E
۞ Lisbon is home to a synagogue originally founded by a Gibraltarian Jew
۞ The inquisition court was held in the Palacio dos Estaus in Rossio Square
۞ Portugal gave refuge to thousands of Jews during the Second World War
۞ Lisbon was home to the great Jewish sages Abarbanel & Abraham Zucato

DAY 8 MONDAY 8th JUNE - TOMAR & COIMBRA
Today we take a short trip to the medieval village of with it’s synagogue built in the mid-15th
century which looks like any other house on the street. Most of the day will be spent in
Coimbra where we will visit a recent discovered Mikve. Coimbra is an ancient University and
we will visit it’s stunning baroque library with over 250,000 volumes.
۞ Tomar is home to a Jewish museum with ancient tablets, gravestones & texts
۞ Recent excavations have revealed a water heating system and ritual baths
۞ Through the centuries Coimbra has been home to three separate Jewries
۞ After a busy day exploring in the evening we will enjoy a traditional fado show

DAY 9 TUESDAY 9th JUNE - COIMBRA & TRANCOSO
DAYS 9, 10 & 11 - TRANCOSO, BELMONTE & PORTO

After the morning exploring Coimbra we will head to Trancoso where we will have the honor
of meeting with Senor Jose Levy Domingez who is a Jewish Journalist. His family have lived
in the area for hundreds of years and he will giving us his first hand experience of the local
culture and history and the families who have lived here.
۞ The recently discovered Mikve we will visit today is not yet open to th public
۞ We will visit the “House of the Black Cat” with its sculpture of the Lion of Judah
۞ Trancoso still preserves the walls and doors of the medieval castle
۞ Jews from Aragon and Castile established themselves here in the 14th century

DAY 10 WEDNESDAY 10th JUNE - BELMONTE & PORTO
We will start the day in Belmonte which was home to many hidden Jews who
secretly preserved their faith in spite of the Expulsion in 1496 and their society has
survived to the present day. Then we will move on to Porto, rich in Jewish Heritage
and famous for giving the world it sweet sherry “Port”.
۞ Jews were at the centre of the development of Porto from the middle ages
۞ We will visit The Lello Bookshop known as the “third best bookstore in the world”
۞ As we explore the beautiful city of Porto we enjoy views of the Duro river
۞ We will taste the famous Port, and the local dessert wine, after dinner

DAY 11 THURSDAY 11th JUNE - PORTO: We will have time in the morning to shop for last minute gifts and for
more exploring in Porto before we make our way to the airport for your flight home
