July 2013 Medieval Fun at Harewood on May Bank Holiday A Knight’s Tale: Over the half-term weekend we travelled back in time with the Medieval Faire at Harewood House. They had archery displays, set battles, jousting, drill, a load of other displays and of course all the stalls with medieval things to look at or buy. They even had a medieval burger van selling Ye Olde Chicken Tikka burgers! My dad said he didn’t realise the Normans were so cosmopolitan. We put him in the stocks for that comment! It was great family day out and we had lovely weather all day. A wide range of activities has been organised, so it remains for you all to bring your friends and join in the fun. Food will be available throughout. Looking much further forward the Memorial Hall celebrates its Diamond Jubilee later this year, and a programme of events to commemorate this event has been placed for September 21st. Dr Tom Keene, who is writing a book on the war experiences of the Linton boys, has promised to give us a talk about them. He visited the Hall earlier in the year, accompanied by Mr Appleyard, the half-brother of Geoffrey. Both men were very impressed with our lovely hall and wish to join in the celebrations. The Village Neighbourhood Plan committee is happy to involve all residents in their aspirations for the future of the village and by the time you read this, no doubt, you will have visited the exhibition and filled in the questionnaire. There are, as usual, several contentious issues which need to be addressed by us all. On a less formal note, the village has been looking at its best will all the trees and flowers in profusion. The tennis coach is encouraging everyone to improve their skills, and the outdoor fitness centre has been pronounced a huge success by everyone!! Fundraising: A big well done to the Collingham School staff for raising over £1,000 for St Gemma’s Hospice by doing a 10 mile midnight walk. The whole school have an enterprise week selling different things to raise money for charity and also a bake off competition organised by House Captains and School Council. Children will bake cakes and they will be judged – a special prize will be given to the best, but that’s not all, the teachers also have to be in the competition, wonder who will win! All will be sold at the end of the day to raise money. Sing Up Award I am very happy to announce that we have achieved the Platinum ‘Sing Up’ award. If you read my previous column you’ll know that we have already achieved the Gold Award and we are all very proud - everyone in the school has something to do with music in some way and now it has been confirmed. 4 CHURCH NEWS Confirmation 2013 Do you want to acknowledge for yourself that you believe in Jesus Christ? Do you want to take a full part in the life of the Church? Or is there a member of your family who would like to explore this for his or her self? If you were baptised as a baby your parents and godparents made promises for you that they would bring you up to learn about the Christian faith and encourage you to take your place in the life and worship of the Church. Confirmation is your opportunity to commit yourself to the continuing journey of faith in the power of the Holy Spirit. For those who were admitted to communion before confirmation this is the next stage of belonging to the Church. If you have never been baptised you can make all the promises for yourself now. Bishop James will be with us at St Oswald’s for the Confirmation Service at 4.30pm on Sunday 20th October and in preparation for that we will be running six weeks of teaching sessions. For young people in Year 7 or above these classes will be on Wednesday evenings at 5.30pm for an hour beginning on the 5th September. Adult classes will be on Sunday evenings at 6pm beginning on the 8th September. If there is a demand from young people in their mid teens we may organise a separate group for them. These sessions will give an opportunity not only to learn more about what we believe but also to discuss the difficult questions about life and what it means. If you are already confirmed but would like to join in the preparation to explore more about the church and the Christian faith you are also welcome to do so. Letters with details of the classes are available in church and should be returned to the Vicarage soon as possible. If you would like to talk about whether this is right for you at this time contact the Revd Sylvia Earle on 01937 573975 or email [email protected]. 21 From the Vicarage From the Vicarage You will notice that in July the All Age Worship will be in the Memorial Hall and you may be wondering why, given that we have a lovely little church. There are a number of reasons for this happening, First the open space allows the young people to contribute to the worship in music and in word in a different way, then the Sunday Club feel they can welcome the congregation into the place where they meet week by week and not least it is good for us to occasionally be jolted out of our routine: it helps us to hear and understand in a fresh way. The Christian is always on a journey of growing in faith and sometimes that journey takes us to new places. Speaking of new places if you are going to be away on holiday in the coming weeks and attend a church, wherever you are do take them greetings from St Oswald’s in Collingham. It would be good if you could bring a postcard back so we can make a display of the different churches and places we have all shared worship with over the summer. Journeying is not just about new places it is also within us and you will find on page 21 details of the Confirmation preparation that will take place in the autumn. Whether you are an adult or a young person at secondary school give some thought as to whether you feel you would like to make your own commitment of faith in this way. It could also be an opportunity for anyone who is already confirmed but who would like to share in the learning and talking to join in. It can be a informal way of asking those questions you always wanted to ask but never had the opportunity – why do we do that or say that or what does the church believe about ...... God rested on the seventh day – I hope you have a chance for relaxation during the summer holidays. Every blessing Sylvia SATS Week: Now onto the most scary, bracing and thrilling week of any Primary school child’s life... SATS week! The name alone sends a shiver down my back, although it wasn’t as pushy as expected. Lots of the children enjoyed its challenge. We had comprehension (on Wolves) on Monday, SPAG (Spelling, punctuation, and grammar) on Tuesday, Maths on Wednesday and Thursday – as for Friday we basically just relaxed. The results ... well we’ll have to wait a few more weeks to find out. Twickenham Trip: If you have been reading my column over these past few months, you will know of a trip that I have mentioned to Twickenham on 25 th May. Well, after months of waiting and rehearsing and bubbling excitement, I am pleased to say that the trip was a great success, – even though a 3am wake up and 4am set off rendered us half awake for the rest of the day. The moon shone bright in the morning and night and the sun shone all day! It took 5 hours to get there, all the while we talked about what it would be like in front of 82,000 people in the stadium. We got there and were greeted by at least 4 other buses; then, as soon as we reached the stadium we were guided into a room called the ‘Rose room’ where all the players meet up after the match. In the 4 hours before the match we practiced on and off the pitch seeing the sheer scale of the massive rugby stadium. Finally, our time had come... the half time whistle went – a huge roar and we were out... everything went to plan – the routine, the lines and most importantly our timing. The one downside to the whole thing was that we didn’t get to see the game. However, to our amazement our teacher got us a VIP pass to the side of the pitch to watch the 2 teams warm up! Best of all we got to see a couple of England players, including Toby Flood and Manu Tualagi. It was a truly amazing trip. Thank you to our teachers for organising it. End of year treats: After a long 7 years of School – work, enjoyment, making friends and learning; Year 6 are going to have 2 treats this year to celebrate the end of Primary School. We will first have a trip to the Italian Restaurant Piccolinos then a trip to Light Water Valley theme park. The other years will also be having end of year treats, Year 1 will be visiting The Yorkshire Wildlife Park. This is my last report for the magazine as I move up to Secondary School next year. I have really enjoyed doing this article and I hope the next child chosen continues to enjoy it just as much as I have. Frank Lawrence Thank you Frank - you have done a great job. It’s an exciting time and this year having spent some time in the regrouping for mission, we are at last able to look outwards rather than inwards and better prepare ourselves as a discipleship movement shaped for mission. Many of our churches are growing in numbers and the young are passionate about social issues and continually pressing their elders to get more involved in the issues of the day. Several members of the circuit, including young people, recently went to London in support of the ‘IF’ campaign. John Wesley reminded us that there is “no holiness other than social holiness” and we are constantly reminded of the plight of others in the growth of Food Banks. As we move to support these and other charities such as Action for Children, Methodist Relief and Development Fund, the refugees from Syria and local charities we remember the call of Jesus to minister to those less fortunate than ourselves. Next time I write for the magazine lots of decisions will have been made. As a representative to Conference from the York and Hull District I am privileged to be part of that decision making process. I wonder what decision we will make as a church about same sex marriage? Please remember us in your prayers as we remember you. Have a lovely summer, with hopefully lots of sunshine and time to enjoy life. The agenda for meetings and the minutes which follow are posted on the notice boards in Elizabeth Court and outside Linton village memorial hall.
