Money Measurement Fun Facts
Watch Your Savings
Grow
If you like to spend money, then you will like saving it, too. That's because
when you save money in your share account at the credit union, it will be
there when you want to buy something special. Make it a habit to save a
part of all the money you get. How much is up to you. But let's say you
spend half of it and save half of it. Then when you really need something,
you will probably have enough money in your share account to buy it. If
you save less, you may need to wait a little longer before you can buy it.
So next time you get money for your birthday or for doing extra chores
around the house, remember to put some in your share account at the
credit union. When it comes time to spend it, you will be glad you did.
1. Did you know that a mile of pennies laid out would
add up to $844.80? Using pennies as a
measurement, America is about $2.5 million wide,
east coast to west coast.
2. The approximate weight of a currency note
(regardless of denomination) is one gram. There are
454 grams in one pound; therefore, it takes 454 notes
to make one pound. Therefore, a million dollars in
ones would weigh approximately 2,202.65 pounds.
3. A stack of currency notes one mile high would contain over 14 1/2 million
notes.
4. If you had a million dollars in pennies, they would weigh around 246 tons.
5. Currency notes today are 2.61 inches by 6.14 inches with a thickness of
0.0043 inches. Before 1929, they measured 3.125 inches by 7.4218 inches.
Making A Coil Maze Game
Supplies Needed:
What's Up This Summer
School's out! It's summer! Here are some
ideas for making the most of it:
1. Visit your library. You'll find
great books to read, plus games,
CDs, and videos, too.
2. Learn something new. Ask a
grown-up to help you find a free or
low-cost class being offered in art, music,
science or other area you want to know more about.
3. Give your time. Volunteer to help out at church or a community
center. Ask around to see what jobs need doing or go to
www.volunteermatch.org or www.serve.gov and search for a
volunteer job that suits you.
4. Earn some cash. Check with neighbors to find out if they need
help with gardening, lawn mowing, or other chores. If your family or
neighbor is having a yard or garage sale, ask if you can join in to
sell the things you no longer want or use.
5. Have fun. Run a race, enter a triathlon, catch a fish, make a craft
project. Or just spend an afternoon with your friends figuring out
cloud pictures.
Your credit union hopes you have a great summer learning new things
and having fun with your friends!
Just For Laffs
Q: Why were the strawberries so upset?
A. Because they were in a jam!
• A clean large plastic lid, for example a peanut butter jar lid, a mayonnaise lid
- make sure it is a deep lid.
• A piece of clear plastic that is larger than your lid. Use plastic from a food
container, items that are packed in plastic, etc.
• Two pieces of colored cardstock - make sure you use two different colors.
• Three small round beads.
• Scissors, pencil, ruler and glue.
How To Make:
1. Trace the lid onto colored cardstock. Cut out the circle
and glue it to the inside of the lid. (You will need to
trim the circle down in size so it will fit inside the lid.)
2. Using the other colored piece of cardstock, cut two
11-inch strips. These need to be as wide as your lid is
deep.
3. Glue these two strips together end to end. Curl the
long strip by wrapping around a round pencil or pen.
This will make one long coil that will fit inside the lid.
4. Form a circle in the center of the coil wide enough to
hold the three small beads. Glue the circle closed see illustration.
5. Cut a small notch (large enough for your beads to go
through) in the center circle and at two other places
along the coil.
6. Glue the coiled strip notched-side down into the lid.
Let the glue dry before doing the next step.
7. Drop your beads into the coil.
8. Trace your lid again onto a piece of clear plastic. Cut
this circle out and glue it to the top of your maze.
Now your beads won't fall out. Let dry.
Now you are ready to play. Try to get all three beads into the center circle. Have
fun! You could make two coil mazes and have a friend play with you. See who
gets the beads to the center first.
