Manipulating CVC Words CVC words are words in the form: Consonant, Vowel, Consonant: e.g. cat Explain to your child that you are going try and change the sounds in a word to make a new word. Use colour counters to help symbolise each sound in the word. Use the word lists provided on the next page. Yum Yum Use a yummy food, e.g. sultanas, jellybeans. Call out a CVC word, and get your child to place one jellybean out for each sound in the word. Then call out a manipulation instruction. Deletion example: “What’s ‘peg’ without the ‘p’?”. Help your child identify which jellybean represents the ‘p’ sound, and remove it. They must then sound out what is left to produce the new word ‘egg’. Once done, they can eat the jellybean they removed. Change example: “How do we change ‘mat’ to ‘man’?”. First help your child sound out each word: ‘m..a..t’, ‘m..a..n’. Then get them to figure out which sound is different – the last one. Finally, let them remove the last jellybean and switch it for another one. They can then eat the one they removed! c a t Parts in a Game Play any game where there are lots of pieces, e.g. puzzles, Lego, Pop up Pirate, Beetle. Call out a CVC word, and get your child to put one piece of the game out for each sound in the word. Then call out a manipulation instruction as above. Once they have carried it out correctly let them use those 3 pieces in the game. Make it Easier Lay out the same number of counters as sounds in the word, e.g. 3 counters for the word ‘cat’. Focus on short sounds, such as in Table 1. Make it Harder Don’t use any visual support (e.g. counters / sweets) . Focus on long sounds, such as in Table 2.
