John A. Scocos Statement on the Anniversary of D-Day
Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary John A. Scocos made the following statement about
the 72nd anniversary of the D-Day invasion:
“A week after Memorial Day this year, we have cause to note another monumental date of significance
for veterans.” said Scocos. “June 6, D-Day, the high-water mark of America’s involvement in World War
II. Today we reflect on the service and sacrifice of so many from the generation that fought so hard to
rid the world of Nazism. Every soldier who assaulted the beach that day and every paratrooper who
made that parachute jump is a true hero for selflessly doing their part to help achieve victory.”
Now known as D-Day, Operation Overload was the largest amphibious assault in history, and included a
massive airborne operation, taking place in Normandy, France in 1944 – the turning point toward the
Allied victory in World War II.
More than 16 million men and women served in uniform in World War II. More than 400,000 sacrificed
their lives. Of those who made it home, just fewer than 700,000 remain today.
Approximately 332,200 Wisconsin men and women served in the war and 8,390 lost their lives.
