07-Jun-16.
Name of problem
VSP4850GTS – USB drive accessibility
Products affected
VSP4850GTS, VSP4850GTS-PWR
Problem description
In rare cases, customers may experience problems viewing the USB drive or saving files, such as the configuration file, to the USB
drive which on the VSP4850GTS platform is mapped to the internal flash drive (i.e. /intflash). Error messages ‘SW ERROR Slot 1:
GetChassisNvram: unable to open chassis NVRAM -3’ may also be printed into the log file when the issue manifests itself.
It is also possible that the VSP4850GTS performs a seemingly ‘silent reboot’, i.e. without writing a core dump file, when USB access
issues are present, when access to a VSP4850GTS switch is attempted using the EDM application, for example.
This problem footprint may possibly be due to the operating system’s kernel having been disconnected from the USB drive and the
USB drive is no longer mounted.
Resolution
Upgrade to VOSS release 5.0.1.0 (or VOSS release 5.1.1.0 and above) as this release has a software detection system that will
proactively identify when the operating system’s kernel has been disconnected from the USB drive and will generate message
‘GlobalRouter SW ERROR Lost internal access to USB’ and alert the user of this issue having manifested itself rather than
the VSP4850GTS platform running into operational issues. VOSS release 5.0.1.0 will also prevent unexpected ‘silent’ reboots of the
VSP4850GTS platform as outlined in the ‘Problem Description’ section. It is recommended that a syslog server has been provisioned
and is enabled to ensure that the above error message is registered as the logging may be incomplete on the device itself.
Should error message ‘GlobalRouter SW ERROR Lost internal access to USB’ be reported when running release 5.0.1.0
(or VOSS release 5.1.1.0 and above), and only then, is it recommended to arrange for an RMA of the affected VSP4850GTS switch at
a convenient point in time as the VSP4850GTS will continue to perform data forwarding operations regardless of the underlying USB
access issue.
Workaround or alternative remediation

Remarks
Generally, it is recommended that the USB drive be ‘house-kept’ regularly i.e. unwanted & out-of-date log files and old, superseded
software images be removed to avoid susceptibility to USB drive corruption.
Patch Notes
The information in this section concerns the patch, if any, recommended in the Resolution above.
Backup before applying the patch
As per standard upgrade procedure, it is recommended to save a copy of the current configuration file on a network TFTP/FTP
server, should issues be encountered during the upgrade.
Download
Download VOSS release 5.0.1.0 (or VOSS release 5.1.1.0 and above) from ‘support.avaya.com’ website’s ‘download’ tab for the
VSP4000 platform.
Patch install instructions
Service-interrupting?
Follow the standard upgrade instructions for VOSS release 5.0.1.0 (or VOSS release 5.1.1.0 and above)
Yes
in the 5.0.1.0 (or 5.1.1.0 or higher) release notes.
Verification
If the upgrade has been successful, VOSS release 5.0.1.0 (or VOSS release 5.1.1.0 and above) will confirm the successful
connection of the operating system’s kernel with the USB drive with log message ‘GlobalRouter SW INFO internal USB
access successful’ during the boot process.
Failure
Repeat the upgrade steps.
Patch uninstall instructions
Downgrade to a release prior to VOSS 5.0.1.0.
