In the early 1900’s, Russians were discontent
(unhappy)
1.Peasants paid high taxes
2.Non-Russians were mistreated
3. Middle class had no vote/say in government
4. Urban workers upset over low pay and harsh
working conditions

• Bloody Sunday – 1905
1. 3,000 workers went to the Czar’s palace in St.
Petersburg with a petition to demanded
changes in Factory Work

2. Government soldiers fired on the unarmed
crowd killing about 1/3 of the men

2. The Bolsheviks then withdrew from the Eastern
Front and abandoned their allies

1. Lusitania Sunk & “Americans Were Killed”
2. Zimmerman Telegram Sent to Mexico
3. Unrestricted U-Boat attacks on U.S. Merchant ships
4. British Naval Blockades stop U.S. trade with Europe

1. Public opinion was favorable for Britain because
of our traditional connection
2.Germany’s unrestricted use of the submarines (UBoat) affected U.S. public opinion Negatively
3. In 1915 - German U-Boat sank the British
passenger ship the Lusitania
4. Nearly 1,200 passengers died (128
Americans)
How will this Newspaper Headline Affect public opinion?
There were 1,248 cases of artillery shells, 4,927 boxes of 1,000 rifle bullets per box ( approx.
5 Million Bullets) and 2,000 more cases of machine gun ammunition on board the ship.

• Germany got scared the US would enter WW I
because of their submarine attacks so Germany
restricted their use of their
U-boats
.
• When POTUS Wilson came up for re-election in
1915 he used the slogan “He kept us out of war”!
A Majority of Americans wanted the U.S. to Stay OUT of WW I
The Republican Candidate Charles E. Hughes was more realistic, but
the American People did not want to hear the reality that the U.S.
would most likely be involved weather we wanted to or not. Hughes
was Right!

1. The British intercept a telegram from Germany to Mexico &
Share it with the U.S.A.
2. The Telegram offered Mexico a deal to gain land in America
in return for attacking the U.S. on the Southern Border
