November Facts
November is the eleventh month of the Gregorian calendar,
though it has retained its Latin name of novem, from when ot was
the ninth month of the Roman calendar. The Anglo-Saxons
referred to this month as Wind Month, marking the onset of windy
winter weather. November is widely considered a month to
remember ancestors and loved ones who have passed on.
The birthstone for November is the Yellow Topaz. Topaz was
named for the ancient Red sea island of Topazios. Cleopatra was
especially fond of topaz because it reminded her of honey. A topaz
is most commonly found in shades of yellow but also comes in
shades of blue, pink, red, green, brown and even black.
Historically, topaz represents loyalty, faithfulness and friendship.
In the Middle Ages, it was believed that wearing the gemstone
could heal many physical and mental disorders and even prevent
the wearer’s death.
The flower for November is the Chrysanthemum. The autumn
flowers known as “mums” or “chrysanths” are named for the
Greek word meaning “gold,” chrysos. They traditionally bloom in
the golden color but are also found in orange and red varieties.
They are often used in teas to ward off the flu, and NASA has found
that mums planted indoors remove pollutants and help clean the
air in your house. Cultures around the world value the
chrysanthemum, and China and Japan hold yearly festivals to
celebrate it. The bloom symbolizes optimism and joy.

George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker
The familiar tale concerns Marie (Jessica Lynn Cohen), a young girl who, at Christmas time, is
given a gift of a nutcracker by her godfather, a magician. She also meets his nephew (played by
Culkin). When she falls asleep, in her peaceful Christmas Eve dreams, the Nutcracker is
transformed into a prince who rescues Marie from a multi-headed Mouse King and takes her on a
trip to the Land of Sweets. The film is narrated in hushed tones by Kevin Kline. ~
