Stewardship Sunday Coming In November
Rector’s Ruminations
It is time again to begin
thinking and praying about
our giving to the Lord and
the Lord’s work in and
through Emmanuel Episcopal
Church. I know finances are
tight again this year. As you
know, because of the
economy and the resulting drop in giving, the
Vestry was forced to make some difficult decisions
last year including: cutting the hours and benefits of
the Parish Administrator, cutting the salary of the
Rector and freezing all other salaries. Be assured
that the treasurer and vestry are again taking a bare
bones approach in preparing a budget, but the
reality is our costs continue to increase.
Over the next several weeks, I will be writing to
you on stewardship and we will hear testimonials
from parishioners about God’s blessings on them
and the blessing of giving, in addition to which we
have heard stewardship themes on several past
Sundays: counting the cost, the shrewd steward and
the rich man and Lazarus.
We have designated November 21st as “Stewardship
Sunday.” On Stewardship Sunday, we will all bring
our pledge cards to the altar. I envision whole
families coming up together at the time of
Communion and placing their plege cards in a
basket in front of the altar. I think it is important to
have the children participate in this so they too can
feel like they are contributing.
What Is A Tithe?
Whenever stewardship time comes around, we are
sure to hear someone say that the tithe is the biblical
standard of giving to God’s work. And we all know
that a tithe is 10%, but 10% of what and to what?
Both questions elicit differing opinions. I will try to
sort them out and offer some guidance. Some, the
“strict constructionists,” say that the tithe is 10% of
our income before taxes and that it should all go to
the church. Additional giving to other charitable or
church organizations is above and beyond the tithe
to the church and is referred to as “offerings.”
A more “loose constructionist” view might include
the following: the tithe is 10% of our income after
taxes or 10% of our “disposable” income. In
addition, the definition of God’s work might be
expanded to include all of one’s charitable giving,
the church being a percentage of that.
Most rectors would love for everyone to be strict
constructionists, but I realize that is not possible or
practical for everyone. The bottom line (pun
intended) is that our giving and whichever model
we choose to follow are between us and God.
In closing, I would like to offer a couple of
suggestions. First, of course, we need pray about
our giving to God’s work. Our giving is a spiritual
discipline and I think it puts things in proper
perspective if we think of it as giving first to God,
which reminds us that it is all God’s anyway and we
are simply giving back to God a portion of what
God has given to us.
Finally, please give joyfully. Please do not give out
of guilt or begrudgingly. Give as much as brings
you joy and satisfaction in the giving.
“Each should give what they have decided
in their heart to give, not reluctantly nor
under compulsion, for God loves a
cheerful giver.” Corinthians 9:7
All blessings,
Fr. Malcolm +

Emmanuel Youth
The month of October has shown to be an exciting
month for the youth of Emmanuel. We have finally
gotten into the swing of things with the youth being
separated between middle and high. Our middle school
youth had been learning about Jesus' parables.
Specifically, we have been focusing on the
good news of "The Prodigal Son". We've
been looking into God as the Father who is
overjoyed when His wayward son returns
home. Throwing a feast and clothing him in
the finest of clothes. Oh how God loves
wayward sinners such as ourselves, willing
to clothe us with the spotless robe of Christ's
righteousness, because Jesus has purchased our return to
the Father on the cross.
The high school group has been meeting at Panera
Bread Sunday afternoons at 4pm. My intentions are to
make this group a relaxed yet spiritually engaging group.
As a group, we decided on a discussion style format.
Instead of walking through specific material, I lead the
students in a discussion about who we are as God's
rebellious creatures and the magnificent plan God has
put forth to, through Christ, reconcile us back to Himself
(2 Corinthians 5:18). Our discussions have been very
fruitful as we ponder the great love of God displayed for
us on the cross of Christ (see Romans 5:8). Since we are
not going through pre-made material, I encourage
anyone who is interested to inquire about our discussion.
I'd be glad to share.
The common element between the middle and high
school groups has been the Gospel of Jesus
Christ. The good news of Christ's sacrifice on our
behalf to reconcile us back to the Father is a
foundational truth that we as Christians are to
labor to keep central in our walks with God.
Scripture teaches that as believers in Christ we
never take our eyes off of Him, who saved us. The
author of Hebrews tells us that we are to be "looking to
Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the
joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising
the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of
God. (Hebrews 12:2 ESV)" Looking to Jesus requires
constant reflection on what He has accomplished for us
and this is why we have been focusing on this life
changing truth.
To Christ alone be the glory,
Ben Kandt
Stephen Ministers Available
Emmanuel is still a Stephen Ministry congregation. What does that mean? It means that if you or someone you
know would like someone to talk to, we have some trained listeners in the congregation. We will listen, we will
not be judgmental and we will keep everything you say in strict confidence. If you are going through a rough
time in your life for any reason, consider a Stephen Minister. All Stephen Minister assignments are made
through our clergy. If you think a Stephen Minister might be a good idea for you, please speak to Fr. Malcolm
or Deacon Janice.
Stephen Ministry Training Available
Stephen Ministry training will again be offered beginning on Tuesday evening January 11, 2011. Emmanuel is
one of about 15 parishes that do our training together. The training lasts for 50 hours on Tuesday evenings and
one Saturday. First Presbyterian, downtown, has again offered to host the classes. The teachers come from
about 7 parishes including our own. If you are interested in finding out more ask Terri Godsell, 407-622-4915
or Joan Dagon 407-831-4418.

November Outreach is for the Christian Service Center & Seniors First
Dry goods for the Christian Service Center may be left in the box in the narthex (holiday items such as canned
ham, yams, stuffing mix, are especially desired).
Our Seniors First project is filling shoe boxes for seniors in need. There are flyers about this
project in the Narthex. We will be filling and wrapping shoe boxes with a small lap throw
(sewn or store bought) and a $10 gift card to Publix, Target or Walmart. These shoe boxes will
be collected here at Emmanuel and taken to Senior's First where they will be delivered to
seniors in need throughout Central Florida. You may also include a short note to the senior.
