TRAFFIC
Can I remind everyone that traffic around the school can be problematic? We had
last week another “near miss”, and yet again this morning! This was reported to me
by a very distraught parent. Patience and understanding of the general traffic
situation around the school (it is and will continue to be an issue) will go a long way
as will the particular understanding of how the “kiss and drive” should be used.
Below is a detailed description of this. If you feel aggrieved by the actions of some
on the road around the school before and after school times, I will always direct you to contact
the City of Joondalup (COJ). I am aware that rangers will be deployed at random times to check
on the situation. Infringements may occur. Overall, this is not something that the school can
resolve and the primary responsibility lies with road users. If there is an appetite to conduct a
“think tank” on possible solutions, I would be happy to convene such a meeting. Expressions of
interest can be emailed to the school ([email protected] ) and need to
be received by the 7th November.
Kiss and Drive - There are 7 marked bays on Lymburner Drive set aside for student
drop off and pick up. The driver must remain with the vehicle and only stay long
enough to safely load or unload the children. We load from the front 3 bays with
students waiting on the footpath until the vehicle has come to a complete halt. Cars
wait for the 3 front bays to clear, then move forward in order of arrival. If your
child(ren) is not present, please drive around the block and try again.
CLASS ARRANGEMENTS 2015
Hillarys Primary does not have a process whereby families request teachers for the following year.
We have, however, asked families of students with particular issues that may impact on their
academic or social development to write to the principal so that these issues can be considered
when we form classes for the new school year. The nature of family movements within the Hillarys
community means that we often start the new school year with 2 or 3 different organisational
plans depending on the numbers of students in each year level. While we continue to ask families to
keep us informed of any planned or last minute changes, we advise families that the school will
consider all requests but cannot guarantee that we can meet all family preferences when trying to
form balanced class groupings. Teachers will be allocated to class groupings as soon as staff
appointments and the clearest picture has emerged. Any written requests should reach the
principal by the 21st November.
Split or multi age class groupings.
In line with departmental policy, Hillarys Primary School welcomes every student from the Hillarys
area that wishes to attend our school. As a result, we often form classes that may have more than
one year level (sometimes known as a ‘split’ class). These formations are common across educational
sectors and have been shown to be equally successful for student learning. Our school operates all
multi age groupings under the philosophy of Developmental Learning (moving the students from
what they can do now to what they need to do next). Additionally, we put structures in place to
maintain links between students across the year levels and as a result should not see any
significant variance between the academic or social performance of students in ‘single’ or ‘multi
age’ classes.
P&C CONTRIBUTIONS
Well done to the 420 out of 603 children’s parents who have paid their $20 voluntary contribution.
I do believe this is a record and certainly assists the P&C in providing for the entire school
community.
INTERSCHOOL CARNIVAL
Well done to all of our athletes who represented the school
so well in last
week’s carnival. As
a team effort it
was
simply
spectacular.
Individuals
also
shone through and
we should all be
very
proud
of
their collaborative and individual efforts. We were
narrowly defeated by Sth Padbury PS for the overall
winning team.
NOMINATIONS FOR BOARD
The School Council has now moved to a Board to be known as the Hillarys Primary School Board.
Due to a number of reasons 3 vacancies are identified and will need to be filled for the 2015 year
and beyond, hence nominations to the HPS Board are now being called for. If you think you may
nominate for the position, please see the attached Nomination Slip and forward this to the front
office by 3:00pm on Friday 7th November. Within the slip there is a “Candidate Profile” which will
assist voters in identifying what you may be able to bring to the Board. For further information
regarding the Board, feel free to give me a call on 93076365 or contact a current Board member
(Karen De Silva, Hayley Martin, Kira Maslen, Nikki Bryant, Rob Bates).
JAPANESE STUDENTS
Welcome to our 9 Japanese exchange students. It appears they have settled in and assimilating
well with our own children. They certainly have a busy schedule in their time here and we wish them
the very best of experiences. Thank you too, to the hosting families for their gesture in
supporting the students.
DESKS
There are 8 old teacher desks available for the “first-in-bestdressed” if anyone would like one. Please contact Sonia or Janene
(in the front office) and register your name TO TAKE, not to view!
They are in the area next to the Science Room if you want to have
a look first. Please pick them up by next Monday as any left after
this date will be disposed of.
HERE NEXT YEAR?
Please inform the front office if you know that your child/children will not be attending Hillarys
PS in 2015. We are at a stage where the finer details of planning are becoming increasingly
important. Thank you in anticipation of this information.
ASSEMBLY
Our next assembly is scheduled for Friday 31st October and will be conducted by C5. Hope to see
you there.

The Count Down Is On - Music Count Us In.
9:30am Thursday October 30th
Hillarys Primary School is promoting the value of music education in schools by
participating in this year’s Music Count Us In event.
Learning music at school makes a unique contribution to a child’s development. Music improves students'
team skills, self-esteem and helps in the progress of Maths and English. The benefits of music are endless.
To celebrate, all students and teachers will sing this year’s song, Paint You A Song, along with more than
600,000 participating students from over 2,100 schools nationwide.
SIM students have been invited to bring their instruments along on this day and jam with the whole school.
Ms Malinovic will again incorporate a Hat Dance that junior students are familiar with. They have the option of
using their school hats or a colourful hat to fit the song.
More information about this event can be found at
http://musiccountusin.org.au/
KIDS MATTER
It’s a fact that children can be taught how to cope with their emotions, to bounce back from problems and to develop
positive relationships – this is called ‘social and emotional learning.’
It’s also a fact that a child’s family is the first and biggest influence on their mental health. Basically, families can teach
children these skills as early as possible in life – even from when they’re babies!
Kids Matter provides families with a range of information sheets to help them support children’s mental health and
wellbeing, and to recognise if and when professional help is needed. They contain practical information, tips and strategies
across a range of common childhood issues, and were prepared by professionals experienced in the area of children’s mental
health and development.
Visit the Kids Matter website to access these information sheets.
Sensei’s News
For two and a half weeks until November 5, Hillarys’
Primary School is hosting nine students from Gunma
Kokusai Academy, an elementary school in Japan. The
students are staying with Hillarys families and attend
class with their host buddies. They are here to practice
their English skills and learn a little about Australia and
our lifestyle.
While they are here they participate in class activities,
go on excursions and attend our Japanese classes to
share their culture, games and allow our students to get
to know some Japanese children and practice their
Japanese skills. The students had to give a talk about an aspect of Japanese culture to their host
class – in English. We were very impressed with their poise, preparation and English skills.
The students are staying with host families and
experiencing Aussie family life. Their families are also
taking their guests on a variety of interesting
experiences. The host children are also learning a little
about Japanese life. We thank the host families for
offering their homes and caring for these young
visitors. Thanks also to the teachers and classmates
who are welcoming these students into their classes and
adapting their programmes to include them.
Meanwhile, senior classes are preparing to introduce a
Japanese character to the class in Japanese while
younger students are learning some Japanese table
manners and how to use chopsticks- using popcorn!
