AIChE: Ready, Aim, Marshmallow
Have you ever wanted to build a catapult? Or wondered what things look like on an atomic level? Then
come learn how to build a marshmallow catapult! You will get to build a catapult, launch marshmallows,
and build basic chemical structures with the marshmallows. Learn about catapult design, levers,
chemical bonds, and atomic shapes, and come challenge yourself in a fun and exciting environment.
Come join us as we launch ourselves into understanding basic physics and chemistry!
BMES: Filtered Blood Challenge
A lot of the equipment you see at a doctor’s office or that is used by doctors to help solve medical
problems is designed and built by Biomedical Engineers. For example, when a kidney fails, it can’t filter
the patient’s blood for toxins like it normally does. A person with kidney failure has to make regular trips
to the doctor to use a dialysis machine, which filters their blood and pumps it back into their body. At the
BMES Spark Competition, you can design your own filter that could help perform dialysis to remove
toxins from blood.
Material Advantage: Candy Crystal Structure
Ever wonder why materials behave like they do? Why is plastic soft and flexible, but steel beams strong
and hard? Come join us at the Candy Crystal Structures workshop! Learn how atoms arrange
themselves to form into crystals and what that means for the strength of items we use every day. We will
use marshmallows as atoms to make a variety of different structures. What are you waiting for? Come
join the fun!
