Project Scope
 Widen Tangerine Road from two to four lanes.
 Create all-weather crossings over washes to
avoid road flooding and closures.
 Plan for future traffic increases.
 Add wildlife crossing structures and funnel
fences based on the AZGFD
Wildlife Linkages Study (2011).
 Use native plants and water
harvesting for landscaping.

The Importance of Maintaining Wildlife
Connectivity on Tangerine Road:
 Tangerine Rd. bisects the Tortolita Fan, which is
rich wildlife habitat.
 This project is included in the RTA Wildlife
Linkages “Wildlife Priority Corridors List.”
 AZGFD 2011 Report weekly road
surveys yielded 5,152 road-kill
detections in just a 5 month
period in 2010.

Wildlife Crossing Design
– Town of Marana, AZ Game & Fish Dept. and Pima
County designed special inlet ramps and outlet
structures to maintain suitability for wildlife.
– Drainage constraints required bottoms in the
medium-sized mammal structures, but baffles will be
added to catch sediment and
create a more natural-feeling floor.
– Small and medium-sized mammal
fencing will deter wildlife from
crossing over the roadway.

Special outlet structures designed to function
hydrologically with little scour and provide wildlife
“sidewalks” along the edges.

Baffles (4” high) will be added every 10 ft inside
culvert floor to catch sediment and create
natural-feeling substrate for wildlife.
