Sun Steel invests in equipment
Sun Steel Treating Inc., a commercial heat treater in South
Lyon, has installed their tenth
Ionitriding vessel. Ionitriding is a
surface hardening treatment for
extending tool life in the metalforming, forging, hydroforming

With gas prices jumping every
week, alternative fuels are beginning to sound more attractive to
the average homeowner. For those
who can’t go all-out and buy a
hybrid car, considering a more
efficient home heating system can
be a good place to start.
Michigan Corn Stoves, a new
South Lyon business, offers the
Magnum Countryside line of
multi-fuel corn stoves. The stoves
burn a variety of inexpensive fuel,
including corn, wood pellets,
cherry pits, olive pits, wheat, barley and navy beans.
The business is owned by Beth
and Ron Glatz, owners of Glatz
Appraisal Company in South Lyon.
“I started seeing these corn
stoves when I did home inspections about five years ago,” Ron
said. “I started researching, and I
liked them so much, I always said
that when I retire, I’m going to
put one in my retirement home.”
After several years of fast-rising fuel prices, he decided not to
wait. Today, the Glatz family
heats their home with a
Countryside stove, the sole brand
sold at their store.
With a multi-fuel corn stove,
Ron said, a typical homeowner
will save between 50 and 70 percent on their heating bills. Beth
estimated the heating cost at $2 to
$4 a day. A basic model
Countryside stove sells for
$1,800, Beth said, while the larger models go up to $2,600.
Another benefit of multi-fuel
stoves is, unlike fossil fuels, they
do not produce greenhouse gases.
“They just are so clean-burning, and it’s a renewable energy
source,” Ron said. “There are just
so many positive things about it.”
In addition, Beth said, using
corn can help local farmers.
“More and more farmers are
looking at getting into this busi-

ness, because they can make more
money selling corn for stoves than
for feed,” she said.
Fuel corn is regular seed corn
that is cleaned, shelled and dried
so that its moisture content falls
under 14 percent. The store recommends several area vendors to
supply fuel for its products.
The Countryside stoves are
similar to wood-burning stoves in
appearance and function.
“It really looks like a fireplace,”
Beth said. “It’s a beautiful blaze.”
Some owners opt to put them in
basements, allowing the heat to
circulate through the furnace fan.
Others put them in their living
room as a centerpiece. The stove
vents outside the house through a
pipe, similar to a dryer. No chimney installation is required.
There is no odor from the burning fuel, Beth said.
“When you look at the pipes
outside when (the stoves) are
burning, there’s no smoke,” she
said. “In fact, when you burn a
hundred pounds of corn over two
days, you might get about six
ounces of residue and that’s about
it. They’re very efficient.”
Fuel corn can be stored for the
winter or from month to month in
a garage or basement.
