Route ‘Utrecht – we all cycle!’ Cycle or walk the long (6km) or short (4km) route and discover how Utrecht is working on becoming a world-class bicycle city. 16 21 What? Explanation 1 Bicycle parking Jaarbeursplein This innovative parking has 4.200 places, is open 24/7, every first day of parking is free. Cyclists are guided to free places by means of digital signs. They can check in and out with their public transport chip card. Public transport bicycles are available, and people can perform small repairs to their bicycle themselves. At the other side of the railway station, the largest bicycle parking in the world (12.500 places) is under construction. It will be completed in 2018. 2 P- route bicycle The P-route bicycle is a world first. The number of free spaces in the nearest bicycle parking is shown on digital signs, so that cyclists can find a place for their bicycle quickly and conveniently. Six bicycle parkings are currently connected. 3 Temporary bicycle parking Westplein This parking is free of charge and has 2.000 places. Cyclists can cross Westplein right through the parking. 4 Major bicycle route The major bicycle routes are used most intensively and connect the various parts of the city. The busiest bicycle routes are covered with red asphalt and will be widened where possible. This route runs from Overvecht via the city centre to Kanaleneiland. 5 Bicycle parking Smakkelaarsveld This free parking with 2.200 places is open and monitored night and day. It will cease to exist in 2018, when the largest bicycle parking in the world is completed. 6 New bridge for cyclists and pedestrians Cyclists and pedestrians can use the new Paardenveldbrug to cross the canal between District C and Daalsesingel. 7 Alternative bicycle route Cyclists can use an alternative route to avoid the busy Vredenburg route, such as the Herenroute through the southern part of the city centre: just as quick but a lot more quiet. The route runs from Central Station via Lepelenburg to De Uithof and is marked in the top layer of the road. 8 Renovation Mariaplaats The space for cyclists and pedestrians in and around Mariaplaats has increased. Comfortable, bicycle-friendly clinkers have been used. A Pop Up Parking – a mobile, manned and monitored bicycle parking, free of charge – is set up here on Saturdays and Sundays. 9 Service bicycle parking 200 people can park their bicycle here (every first day of parking is free). Electric carrier bicycles, bicycle trailers and buggies are for hire. Cyclists parking their bicycle can also use a locker free of charge, repair their bicycle in the DIY corner or charge the battery of their electric bicycle. 10 Tour de France In the old days, buses and bicycles passed through the cathedral tower. Now this is a privilege for cyclists and pedestrians exclusively – as well as for the cyclists of the Tour de France (second stage 2015). 11 Renovation Drift For many years, rows of tightly parked bicycles led to unsafe situations. In collaboration with the university, the municipality is solving the bicycle parking problem with a new parking in Keizerstraat (330 bicycles) and bicycle parking places at Janskerkhof and Voorstraat. A total of 600 places is added. A one-year bicycle parking ban will be in place as a pilot. 12 * Bicycle parking space * Pop Up Parking * Traffic lights removed * A Pop Up Parking is set up from Thursday through Sunday where people can park their bicycle free of charge. * In 2014, bicycle parking spaces were created in Neude, which are alternately used as loading and unloading locations. * In the spring of 2015, everybody could report traffic lights they regarded as unnecessary to the municipality. The traffic lights at the intersection with Potterstraat were removed several years ago, and the intersection was modified. 13 Bicycle tin Many residents in districts do not have any space to park their bicycle safely. This is why the municipality has installed so-called ‘bicycle tins’. Up to five bicycle tins are added every year. If there is sufficient support, car parking places will be replaced by these bicycle tins. 14 Major bicycle route Hopakker is part of the major bicycle route Overvecht-Kanaleneiland. The route will be modified in stages with wider bicycle paths and bicycle streets with red asphalt. 15 Countdown traffic lights These traffic lights are equipped with a digital countdown display that shows how long it takes until the light turns to green. 16 Bicycle street This part of the major bicycle route is a bicycle street, where cars are guests. The street is specifically designed to restrict car use. Over 12 kilometres of bicycle street has been built in Utrecht. 17 School zone Dr. Boschschool Primary schools will be awarded the Utrecht Traffic Safety Label if they meet certain requirements. For instance, they have to see to create a safe school environment with yellow-red bollards and the indication ‘SCHOOL’ on the road surface. 18 Neighbourhood parking Neighbourhood parkings are widely used. There are some 30 of these parkings across the city (2015), and one or two are added every year at the neighbourhood’s request. Residents pay about 40 euros per year to rent a parking place. 19 Renovation intersection This intersection was renovated and made safer in 2014. Cyclists now have a better view, and a pedestrian crossing was added. 20 Major bicycle route At the opposite site Zeedijk will be made into a major bicycle route. Major bicycle routes are bicycle streets or separate bicycle paths with fewer traffic lights or other obstructions. They are constructed in quiet surroundings along waterways or green areas wherever possible. These routes are ideal for electric bicycles. 21 * Busiest bicycle route * Diagonal bicycle crossing * Here is the busiest bicycle route of the city, used by 25.000 cyclists every day! This number increases by 4% per year. * A diagonal crossing allows cyclists to cross faster. 22 Bicycle parking Vredenburg Here, some 800 visitors to the city centre can park their bicycle – every first day of parking is free. A roller belt was installed in 2014 to help people get up the steep incline to the parking. 23 Diversions More space for cyclists is being created in the Railway Station Area. The municipality is entering into hard and fast agreements with contractors to give priority to safe diversions for cyclists. 24 Right-of-way situations Many experiments are being carried out with directional lanes and coloured guiding lines on the road surface. Traffic wardens are used to increase safety. For further information, see: utrecht.nl/bicycle @utrechtfietst
