Offering a window to the past as you wind your way through demonstrations and a vast collection of artifacts, memorabilia and exhibits illustrating life ingenuity and inventiveness of our forefathers as they experienced the challenges, hardships, joys and "the good life" of the years gone by. Village & Carriage Museum - Portrays the Village of Altamont as it may have looked over 100 years ago with many of the original businesses such as the hardware store, cobbler, machine shop, Western Union office, etc. The museum also contains one of upstate New York's largest collections of horse-drawn carriages. Daily activities include demonstrations and a Lumberjack show. Stop in to the Altamont County Store showcasing our local artisans and producers of handcrafted and home grown products. Circus Museum - One of the finest educational and fun-filled circus museums in the northeast which includes the only five-piece circus band (with mechanical musicians) to be found in North America. See circus trains traveling on more than 100 feet of track; a display of the circus as it traveled by rail and set up in its tent city; a selection of photos and lithographs dating to 1866 and much more. Visit the Country Store featuring a farmers market – fresh fruits and produce daily. Chapel - (opens daily at 8:30 am) - constructed to meet the needs of all travelers and especially those traveling with the carnival. During fair week services are held at 6:00 pm Farm Machinery Museum - The Farmer - A Great American Hero. One of the largest collections of “hit and miss” working engines. Most of us probably take our food resources for granted giving little thought to where it comes from and how it was produced. Learn about many talents and requirements to be a successful farmer in early America. He had to be a manager, inventor, husband, father, laborer, and veterinarian. See the vast collection of equipment developed, improved and used from the 1800's to the early 1900's to ensure a reliable food supply. Featuring a new windmill pumping water. One Room Schoolhouse - constructed in the 1850's as KNOX SCHOOL NO# 12 - donated by the Van Benschoten family. At one point in history there were 21 such districts in the town of Knox, Albany County. Experience the setting of learning when grades 1 - 8 simultaneously occupied one classroom, where one teacher covered all subjects including health, music, math, reading, spelling and English. Special children activities daily. Blacksmith Shop - "smith" from "smite", "black" from "black metal", the blacksmith was the early American handyman. He made nails, hinges, sled runners, scythes, and wagon tires, and every kind of tool. Hardly an implement or utensil cannot be traced to the early blacksmith. Hometown Heroes - This museum showcases the firefighting and law enforcement commitment to our community with an emphasis on modern equipment and methods. There will be periodic demonstrations by local fire departments as well as many activities for including an opportunity for them to try on actual firefighting gear. Farm House - Was life really better in the "good old days"? Check out the ever-changing exhibits about life on the farm around the turn of the century. How did they manage without running water or electricity? What was important? What was the same and what was different? What did you possibly do for entertainment before video games and iPods? Look at how the Victorian passion for exploration and accumulation lead to the discovery and preservation of history. See what children did in the 1800’s. 18th Century New World Dutch Barn - stands as a monument to the early pioneers and their way of life. It was a multi-use building which provided shelter, storage and a work area during inclement weather. Auto Museum - Cars: Past, Present & Future - Celebrate all things auto. Interested in cars? Follow the development of the internal combustion engine and the evolution of the American automobile. Visit the newly refurbished 1917 Vim made in Philadelphia PA with its 22 HP engine or the refurbished 1927 Buick. Featuring Dave Davies Jr. and Dave Davies Sr.from Davies Custom Painting and Pinstriping with their amazing display of motorcycles built or custom painted over the years.
