A N N UA L R E P O R T 2 01 5 Working to strengthen, support and advocate for the Ramsey County Library system in order to enrich the lives of our library users, to promote literacy and education, and to foster community. Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries was formed in 1979 to advocate for and support public library services provided in suburban Ramsey County. The Friends is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization with a governing board of directors, three part-time staff, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers. Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries is the group that can pool the gifts of many donors and magnify the impact on the community. Individuals and organizations contribute to the Friends to ensure that the libraries remain places where anyone can find information, get help with technology and media, meet and talk with others who share their interests, and expand their skills in just about any subject. Many programs and services at the libraries located in Maplewood, Mounds View, New Brighton, North Saint Paul, Roseville, Shoreview, and White Bear Lake would not have been possible without the financial support of Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries. The Friends have initiated, funded, enhanced, or expanded programs for all ages including the Summer Reading Program, Kindergarten Library Card Signup, adult computer classes, teen book clubs and special events, homework assistance, and training for job seekers. They have also made substantial additions to the collection of library books and materials. In addition, the Friends have raised funds for capital campaigns for library construction or remodeling of the Ramsey County libraries in North St. Paul, Maplewood, Roseville, New Brighton and White Bear Lake. Since 2011, the Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries has been certified by the Minnesota Charities Review Council as meeting all 27 standards covering Public Disclosure, Governance, Financial Activity, and Fundraising. Donors can be assured that their gifts will be managed in the most effective way for the benefit of users of the public libraries. 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW The mission of the Ramsey County Library is to provide free access for all to the knowledge and ideas that transform lives. The vision is to create extraordinary learning environments and experiences. The Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries provides financial and human resources that support that mission and vision. With the help of the public and the Friends, Ramsey County Library was able to provide free access to the following resources in 2015: Access to millions of ideas and resources. 15,988 new patrons registered for library cards 4,095,008 items checked out 267,930 reference questions answered Programs and educational events that bring families and communities together. 1,588,525 visits to the Ramsey County libraries Library meeting rooms used by 1,924 external groups 1,008 programs attended by 11,516 adults Computer classes that teach people new skills. 159 free technology classes for 1,218 attendees 287 one-on-one help labs for 1,466 participants Free Internet access offers equal opportunity to the economically disadvantaged, seniors, and people with disabilities. Library computers were used for Internet access for 282,641 hours. The Library’s web site was visited 1,925,519 times. 1 Employment resources that help people find jobs. 578 online employment coaching sessions through JobNow. 55 workforce development classes attended by 356 job seekers 12 business start-up counseling sessions for new entrepreneurs Language learning resources that help new Americans to assimilate. 130 Conversation Circles in which people could practice their English. Libraries offer free online ESL and foreign language instruction and translation resources. Early literacy resources and storytimes to help get children “school-ready.” 1,626,393 children’s items were checked out Children’s Librarians provided 635 storytime sessions with 31,023 attendance 2 Educational programs to help children succeed in school. 1,367 children’s programs attended by 60,835 7,234 children and teens participated in the Summer Reading Program More than 1,000 people participated in the Kindergarten Library Card Sign Up Celebration After school hours provide a constructive place for teens to study, read, and learn. 2,158 visits to the free, online tutoring Homework Rescue site 874 teen programs with an attendance of 10,982 The Friends were also directly responsible for the following contributions to the Library: $264,649 in grants and donations to the Library for the Summer Reading Program, Information Literacy Classes, Workforce Development, programming for children and teens, additions to the lending collection, outreach to underserved populations, Library Newsletter, volunteer and employee development and the capital campaign for the library in White Bear Lake. $114,529 worth of books added to the library collection. 7,835 volunteered hours at events, book sales, library programs and community outreach. 3 Friends having fun fundraising!
