TheMCISprogramisofferedbySchoolofCommunicationandInformation(SC&I).The
ProgramisofferedincollaborationbetweentheDepartmentofCommunication,
DepartmentofJournalismandMediaStudies,andtheDepartmentofLibraryand
InformationScience.
Adaptingtoaudiences,designingeffectivecommunicationstrategies,collaboratingand
resolvingconflicteffectively,andleveragingsocialmediaareafewofthecomplexitiesof
communicationthatMCISstudentslearntounderstand.
Foundedin1987,TheMCISprogramisdesignedtoprovideitsstudentswithopportunities
toexecuteacourseofstudythatenablesthemtoleveragetheoreticalunderstandingof
criticalcommunicationandinformationprocessesintopracticeoradvanceddoctoral
studies.OurfivespecializedtracksinGeneralStudies,StrategicOrganizational
Communication,DigitalMedia,HealthCommunicationorResearchAssociatesenable
studentstoeitherfocusstudyinoneareaorcombineareasofstudytotailoraprogramfor
students'careergoals.
Ourstudentsjoinusfromavarietyofbackgroundsanddisciplines.Approximatelytwo
thirdsofourstudentscometouswithsignificantworkingexperienceandtheotherthird
comedirectlyfromundergraduateprograms.Someofourstudentscomewithstrong
communicationbackgroundsinstudyaswellasexperience,althoughmanycomefroma
varietyofotherrelatedbackgroundssuchasbusiness,sociology,publichealth,socialwork,
English,IT,andthehumanities.
Ourfacultyarecutting-edgeresearchersandpractitionerswhounderstandtheimportance
ofleveraginggeneralknowledgeandtheoryintopractice.Studentsintheprogramwill
learnhowunderstandingunderlyingdynamicsandessentialprocessesofcommunication,
interaction,andknowledgecreationcanenablehigh-levelskillexecutioninpractice.
Theprogramdrawsdiversegroupsofstudentswithavarietyofemployment,educational,
cultural,andnationalbackgroundswithawidevarietyofgoals:Recentgraduatesof
bachelorprogramsseekingadvancedknowledge;experiencedprofessionalsseekingcareer
advancementorcareerchange;studentsboundforPh.D.programsinCommunicationor
MediaStudies.
AbouttheProgramLeadership
TheMCISdegreeisofferedandadministeredbytheDepartmentofCommunicationledby
theMCISDirector,whoisalsoafacultymember.TheMCISExecutiveCommitteeincludes
representativesfromtheProgramfacultywhoworkwiththeDirectoronallissuesrelated
totheprogram’sadministration.Teachingfacultyincludesthefull-time,tenure-track

membersofeachofthethreedepartmentsintheSchoolaswellaspart-timelecturers
(PTLs)withoutstandingandrelevanteducationalandprofessionalbackgrounds.
OverviewoftheProgramRequirements
MCISstudentscomplete36creditstoearntheirdegree.Theprogramisself-paced(3-12
creditspersemester).Studentscanchoosebetweenfourspecializationsandonegeneral
specialization.Studentsareadmittedtothegeneralprogramandmaystaywithina
specializedtrackormaycombinetrackstofocusonmultipleareasofinterest.
Studentsmustcomplete15creditsofcorerequirements;and21creditsofelectives.Upto
6creditsofgraduateworkcanbetransferredinfromanotherUniversityorfromother
programsatRutgers.
Specializations
CommunicationandMediaStudies
Inthisgeneralspecializationstudentswilltakeaself-designedcourseofstudydrawing
acrossanyofthespecializedMCISspecializationsaswellascoursesinotherareasofthe
School.Coursesinorganizationalcommunication,mediatedcommunication,health
communication,socialinteraction,knowledgemanagement,andmediastudiesareoffered
throughouttheyear.Manyofthesecoursesarecross-listedwiththedoctoralprogramin
theSchool.
StrategicOrganizationalCommunication
IntheStrategicOrganizationalCommunicationspecializationstudentsareableto
emphasizetheory-basedstudyoforganizationalprocess,structure,andinteractionaswell
asuseofnewcommunicationtechnologiesinorganizationalandsocietalcontexts.Courses
examineorganizationsinavarietyofcontextsincludingbusinesses,nonprofits,civilsociety,
andgovernment.Thisspecializationmaybeespeciallyappealingforthosewhosehave
goalsforcareersincorporatecommunication;strategicuseofsocialmediain
organizationalsettings;advocacyandpromotionofadvocacy,community-based,and
nongovernmentalorganizations.
Electivesinthisspecializationincludecoursesdealingwithorganizationalleadership,
organizationaldecision-making,inter-organizationalrelationships,organizationalchange,
organizationaltraining&development,persuasion&advocacy,networks,collaboration&
conflict,globalorganizations,virtualorganizing,work&technology,knowledge
management,informationpolicy,competitiveintelligenceandsocialmedia.
DigitalMedia(AvailableFullyOnline)
Thisspecializationisintendedforjournalistsandothercommunicationspecialistswho
wishtoretoolandgainunderstandingof21stcenturymedia.Thisincludesstudyof
grassrootsreportingandadvocacy.Thespecializationwillensurestudentsareconversant
indigitalvideocapture,editing,andproductionaswellassocialmediamanagement.This
specializationiscompletelyonline(althoughface-to-faceoronlineelectivesinother
specializationsareavailabletothesestudentsaswell).
Electivesinthisspecializationincludenewmedialawandpolicy,critiquingmarketing
communications,digitaljournalism,digitaladvocacyandpersuasion,globalization,media
andsocialchange,anddigitalmediaproduction,andinterfacedesign,amongothers.
HealthCommunication
Thisspecializationisintendedforstudentswhowishtospecializeinvariouscontexts
relatedtocommunitywellnessandhealthinteractionsuchaspublichealth
communication;facilitatedprovider-patientcommunication;healthcampaignsand
advocacy;andcommunityhealthandwellness.
Electivesinthisspecializationincludepersuasion&advocacy,e-publichealth,communitybasedorganizing,interpersonalhealth,healthcampaigns,mediatedhealthcommunication,
healthinformatics,socialinformatics,andrecordsmanagement.Studentswhohave
interestsinhealthorganizationsmaywishtocombinestudyinthisspecializationwith
studyintheStrategicOrganizationalCommunicationspecialization.
CommunicationandMediaResearch
ResearchAssociatesareselectedintheirfirstsemesterofstudyandhavedifferent
requirements(9creditcore;ResearchandTeachingasexperientialcomponent-6credits;
21creditsofelectives).Thesestudentsapplyinthefirstsemesterofstudytobeinvolvedin
moreintensiveresearch-focusedtraining.Inadditiontocourseworktheywillbeinvolved
inempiricalresearchwithafacultymember;assistinteachingacourse;andfocustheir
studyandcapstoneprojectwitharesearchorientation.Studentswhoareaimingtoward
doctorallevelstudyoraresearchcareermaywishtoconsiderapplyingtobeaResearch
Associate.Thereisnofundingassociatedwiththisopportunity.

PoliciesAboutSpecializations
1. Studentsmayusespecializationtoorganizetheirstudies.Studentsarenotrequiredto
officiallydeclareaspecializationortocompletetheirdegreesolelywithinagiven
specialization.
2. Thereisnorequirementthatstudentsdeclarethattheyareswitchingspecializationif
theydecidetheirinterestschangeoverthecourseoftheirdegree.
3. Theprogramstrivestoplancourseofferingssuchthatatleasttwoelectivesper

1)Capstoneisa3-creditfacultysupervisedprojectcompletedbyallMCISstudents
inornearthelastsemesterofstudy.Capstonerequiresstudentstointegratewhat
theyhavelearnedintheMCISprogramthroughthecompletionofaclearlyfocused
casestudy,literaturereview,orempiricalproject.Theprojectscanbeofanapplied
orscholarlynature.Allprojectsareinformedwithliteratureandscholarly
knowledgegainedthroughtheprogram.Projectsaresupervisedbythecourse
instructoraswellasthroughfacultymentors.
2)E-Portfolioisa3-creditonlinecourseinwhichstudentsdevelopaprofessionaleportfoliothatshowcasesaresume;academicwork,professionaldevelopment
courses,certificationsand/ormilitaryservice;socialmediaandotherdigitalassets;
relevantaudio/videomaterial;professional,communityandschoolactivities;and
writingsamples.Theclasswillleveragetheory,research,bestpractices,andcurrent
thinkingtohelpeachindividualdeterminethemosteffectiveapproachtoreach
relevantstakeholdergroupsandtoidentifycriticalstepstoreachingcareergoals.
Assignmentswillhelpstudentspreparetheire-portfolios,whichtheywillbeableto
useintheircareersearches.Feedbackfromtheinstructorandpeerswillprovidean
“outside”perspectiveofe-portfolios.
ElectiveCourses(21Credits)
InadditiontotheelectivesmadeavailableintheMCISspecializations,studentsmayapply
uptosixcreditsofcourseworkfromoutsideoftheSchoolofCommunicationand

Information.StudentsmaywishtosupplementtheirMCISprogramwithcoursesin
Business,SocialSciences,orotherprofessionalschools.
ExperientialLearning
AllMCISstudentscantakeuptosixcreditsofexperientiallearningaspartoftheirelectives.
Inthesesupervisedexperiences,studentswillengagewithpractitionerstolearnskillsand
perspectives.Gradesareassignedbasedonaself-evaluationbythestudentanda
supervisor-evaluationbythepractitionerorfacultymember.Onlinestudentsmay
completethisrequirementinanonlineopportunityorintheirlocalarea.Studentsmay
satisfythisrequirementthrough:
• Internships(150hoursfor3credits)inbusinesses,nonprofits,government
agencies,and/orRutgersunits/departments.Studentsmaynotinternwherethey
areemployed.Studentsmaytaketwointernships(150hours/3credits)orone
internship(300hours/6credits).
• ResearchPracticum-Studentsworkwithfacultyinexecutingcutting-edge
researchprojects.Studentsmaytaketwopracticums(3creditseach)iftheywish.
• TeachingInternships--Studentsworkasassistantstoaprofessorinacourse
relatedtotheirstudy.TeachingAssistantshipsmustbeapprovedbythecourse
instructor,theMCISDirector,andtheCommunicationDepartmentChair.Toapply
forateachinginternship,startwithanemailtotheMCISDirectorpriortotheterm
youwishtoassist.
• Fellowship--StudentsapplyandareselectedasFellowsintheJohnson&Johnson
Fellowshipprogram.Sixofthecreditsearnedinthisprogrammaybeappliedto
degreerequirements.Fellowshavetuitionpaidandreceiveastipend.Theyspend
20hoursperweekonsiteatJ&J.
InternationalStudentsandExperientialLearning—Specialrulesapplytointernational
studentsregardinginternshipsandfellowships.Studentsareresponsibletoknowwhat
theirvisastatuspermitsinthewayofCPT(CurricularPracticalTraining)andother
opportunitiesofthisnature.InternationalstudentsshouldcheckwiththeInternational
ServicesOfficeoncampusforadviceanddetailedorientation.TheMCISprogramwill
maintainalistofinternshipopportunities(aswellaspracticumandteachinginternships)
intheprogramandoncampusthatwillpermitinternationalstudentstomeettheir
experientiallearningrequirement.
PoliciesRelatedtoSatisfyingDegreeRequirements
1. Studentsarerequiredtosuccessfullycomplete36creditstoearntheMCISdegree
includingthecoreandelectiverequirements.
2. 9creditsisconsideredafull-timeload.12creditspertermisthemaximumcourse
loadandrequiresapprovalbytheDirector.Studymayalsobepursuedpart-time.
3. Studentsarerequiredtosatisfydegreerequirementswithatleast27creditsin
courseworkasidefromindividualizedexperiencessuchasindependentstudies,
practicums,internshipsandthelike.
4. Fellowsmayapplynomorethan6creditsofFellowshipcredittowardssatisfying
thedegreerequirements.Theywillregisterforandparticipateinupto12creditsof
Fellowshipworkasanenhancementtotheirprogramexperience.
5. Studentsmayapplyuptoatotalto6creditsfromothergraduateprograms(both
inside/outsideofRutgers)totheirdegreerequirementuponapprovalofthecourse
bytheprogramdirector.
a. TransferfromaRutgersProgram—arequesttocountacoursefroma
Rutgersgraduateprogramshouldbemadepriortoenrollment.Theprogram
directorwilldeterminetheappropriatenessofapplyingthecoursetothe
MCISdegree.Gradesofsuchcoursesaretreatedthesameascourseswithin
theMCISprogram.
b. TransferfromanotherUniversity’sProgram—arequesttocountacourse
fromanotheruniversity’sgraduateprogramcanbemadeatanytimeduring
thestudent’sprogramofstudy.Sucharequestshouldincludethesyllabusof
thecoursetaken;atranscriptshowingthegradeearnedbythestudentinthe
course;andabriefexplanationofwhythestudentbelievesthecourseis
applicabletotheMCISdegree.Suchtransferswillbemadeonlyifthe
DirectorfindsthecourserelevanttotheMCISprogram;thestudentearned
anBgrade;andthecoursewastakenwithinfiveyearsofentryintotheMCIS
program.Thestudentisresponsibletoensureallthestepsofthistransfer
processarecompletedandthatanappropriateformfortransferofcreditis
signedandonfileintheStudentServicesOfficeofSC&I.
6. StudentsareexpectedtoearngradesofBorbetterintheircoursework.Nomore
thansixcreditsbearingagradeofCorC+andnocreditsbearingagradeofForIN
maybeusedinmeetingtherequirementsfortheMCISdegree.
7. Studentsmaytakeamaximumof54creditstomeetdegreerequirementsforthe
MCISdegreeincludingcreditsbearingthegradeofIN.

InternationalStudents
Internationalstudentsshouldpayattentiontothespecialproceduresrequiredbythe
GraduateAdmissionsoffice.Onceinthecountryyoushouldparticipateintheprograms
sponsoredbytheInternationalServicesOffice(ISO)
(http://internationalservices.rutgers.edu/).
Inparticular,westronglyencourageallinternationalMCISstudentstoparticipateinanISO
orientationsession.MCISwillbehappytopayyourorientationfee.Therearemany
specificrulesandmuchinformationthatapplytointernationalstudents.Pleasemakesure
youmakeuseoftheISOprograms,advisersandinformation.
SpecialOpportunities
MCISFellowships
JohnsonandJohnsonFellows(whoarefundedthroughtheJohnson&Johnson
FellowshipProgram)willtake3creditsofFellowship(FellowsI,II,III,IV)eachsemesterof
theirfellowshipandmaycount6ofthesecreditstowardtheMCISelectivesrequirement.
Thisisaverycompetitiveofferingandusuallyattractsmanyhighlyqualifiedapplicants.
ThesestudentsareselectedbyJohnsonandJohnsontobeFellowsandspend20hoursper
weekatJ&Jaspartoftheirlearningexperience.Theyaregivenastipendplustuitionand
gainvaluableexperience.AllMCISapplicantsareconsideredforJ&JFellowshipsaspartof
ouradmissionsprocess.Nominatedstudentsareaskedtosupplyaprofessionalresumefor
furtherconsideration.TypicalFellowplacementsareforfoursemesters–althoughareona
semester-by-semesterbasis,dependingonthestudent’sperformanceintheFellowship
andintheprogramandthecontinuingavailabilityofsupportfromthesponsor.Students
mayapplyandbeconsideredforFellowshipsinsubsequentsemestersaftertheybeginthe
MCISProgram.

AcademicPerformanceandPoorPerformance
ProgressTowardsDegree
CandidatesfortheMCISdegreeareexpectedtomakesteadyprogresstowardthe
degree.Itisexpectedthatastudentwillachievethedegreewithin4yearsfromthe
semesterinwhichs/heenters.Ifthestudenthasnotachievedthedegreewithinthat
4-yearperiod,andwishestocontinueintheprogram,s/hewillneedtofilearequestfor
anextensionthatmustbereviewedandapprovedbytheDirector.Thatextension,if
granted,willspecifytheadditionaltimethestudentwillbegrantedtocompletethe
degree.
LeaveofAbsencefromProgram
Studentswhomustinterrupttheirstudiesmay,withtheapprovalofaprogramdirector,
registerforMatriculationContinued(leaveofabsence).Thereisnotuitionfeeforthis
registration,althoughastudentfeeischarged.Studentswhodonotregisterfor
MatriculationContinuedwillbechargedareactivationfeeupontheirreturntothe
program.(Studentsontemporaryvisaswhointerrupttheirstudiesmustinmostcases
leavetheUnitedStatesduringsuchperiods.)MatriculationContinuedisavailableonly
tostudentsnotenrolledinanycourseworkandnotusingfacultytimeanduniversity
facilities,excepttocompletepreviouscourseworkfromclasseswithincompleteor
temporarygrades.MCISstudentsmayenrollinMatriculationContinuedfora
maximumoftwoconsecutivesemesters.
ScholasticStanding
CandidatesfortheMCISdegreeareexpectedtoearngradesofBorbetterintheir
coursework.Withineachprogram,nomorethan6creditsbearingagradeofCorC+,
andnocreditsbearingagradeofForIN,maybeusedinmeetingrequirementsforthe
master'sdegree.Atotalofnomorethan54creditsmaybetakentomeetdegree
requirementsfortheMCISdegree,includingcreditsbearingthegradeofIN.
PoorPerformance
• AcademicReview.TheScholasticStandingCommittee,composedofelectedand
appointedfacultymembers,shallreviewandmaytakeactionontherecordofevery
studentwhohasreceived6creditsofCorC+,or3creditsofFgrades,orexpired
incompletegradessinceheorshebegantheMCISprogram.
• Warning.Astudentshallbewarnedinwritingwhenheorshehasreceived3
creditsofCorC+grades,3creditsofFgrades,or3creditsofexpiredincomplete
gradesoratanytimethefacultyfeelsthatthestudent'sacademicperformanceis
suchthatheorshemaybeindifficultyunlesstheworkimproves.

• Dismissal.Studentsareinformedinwritingofacademicdismissaliftheyhaveearned
morethan6creditsofCorC+orFgrades,orexpiredincompletegrades.Studentswhoare
dismissedwillbedroppedfromtheprogramandwillnotbepermittedtotakecoursesfor
creditunlesstheyformallyarereadmittedtoSC&I.Theminimumdismissaltimebefore
readmissionisonefullterm,notincludingthesummer.

Appeal.StudentsdesiringtoappealadecisionoftheMCISExecutiveCommittee
mustadheretothefollowingprocedure.
1.Applicantsmustappealinwritingtotheprogramofficeconcernedwithin
thirtydaysofthedecisiondate.
2.Uponreceiptofthewrittenappeal,theprogramdirectorreviewsthe
appellant'sfiletoensurethatthescholasticstandingreviewwashandled
accordingtoestablishedpoliciesandprocedures.Afterthisprocedural
review,thefileisreturnedtotheMCISExecutiveCommitteethatmadethe
originaldecision,withtherequestthatthedecisionbereconsidered.The
programofficesendsalettertothestudentstatingthatthecaseisbeing
reconsidered.
3.TheMCISExecutiveCommitteereconsidersthecaseusinganyadditional
informationsubmittedbytheapplicantwiththeappeal.Eitheranew
decisionoraconfirmationoftheoriginaldecisionistobesenttothe
programoffice,whichwillinformthestudentaccordingly.
4.Shouldthestudentbedissatisfiedwiththedispositionofthefirstappeal,a
subsequentappealmaybemadeinwritingdirectlytothedeanoftheschool
within30days.Thedeanwillreviewthefileandconsultasnecessarywith
theMCISExecutiveCommittee.Thedean'sdecisionismadeinwritingtothe
student,withcopiesofthedecisiontotheMCISExecutiveCommittee.The
dean'sdecisionisfinal.
•
Readmission.Studentswhohavebeendismissedforacademicreasonsarenot
consideredforreadmissionuntiltheyprovideevidencethattheycansuccessfully
completetheprogram.SuchstudentsshallapplytotheMCISProgramDirector.The
facultymaystipulateoneorbothofthefollowing:
1.Aminimumperiodoftimefollowingthedismissal(atleastonetermnot
includingSummerSession)beforeanapplicationforreadmissionwillbe
considered.
2.Anyotherevidence(e.g.,medicalreport)orrequirementthatmightbe
deemedappropriatetoaparticularstudent.Studentsusuallyarenot
