Alligators live in two places: the
southern United States and eastern
China. American alligators can be
over 3 meters long and weigh up to
450 kg. They are much longer and
heavier than Chinese alligators.

When a butterfly comes out of its
chrysalis, it must wait an hour or
more for its wings to dry. The fastest
butterfly can fly about 19 km per
hour. Butterflies live on every continent except Antarctica.

The pea crab is smaller than a dime,
but the Japanese Spider Crab is 3
1/2 meters long from claw to claw.
Crabs walk and swim sideways. Female crabs lay between 1,000 and

Dolphins communicate with each
other using whistles, clicks, and other
sounds. They eat fish, squid, and
shrimp. The smallest dolphin is only
about 50 kg, but the largest species
can weigh 9,000 kg!

The largest elephant ever weighed
almost 11,000 kg. That’s as much
as 12 cars! The elephant is the only
land mammal who can’t jump. Elephants can smell water up to 19 km
away.

A group of frogs is called an army.
Frogs don’t drink water; they absorb
it through their skin. Some tree
frogs can jump fifty times their
length. That’s like you jumping the

A newborn giraffe is taller than most
humans. Giraffes sleep standing up.
And did you know that no two giraffes have the same spot pattern?
Giraffes can sprint up to 56 km per

The name hippopotamus means
“river horse.” Hippos can easily outrun humans and are considered one
of the most dangerous animals in
Africa.

Did you know?
A green iguana can be up to seven
feet long. That’s longer than you! A
green iguana can stay underwater
for up to 30 minutes. It can live to
be twenty years old.

The smallest jellyfish is smaller than
the head of a pin. The largest is bigger than a person! Jellyfish don’t
have brains, but some have eyes. A
group of jellyfish is called a smack.

Newborn kangaroos are very tiny.
They weigh as much as a lima bean!
Red kangaroos can move faster than
a racehorse. There are more kangaroos than humans in Australia.

The average male lion weighs about
180 kg, but the heaviest on record
weighed over 360 kg! In the wild,
lions rest for about twenty hours a
day.

A male moose’s antlers can grow to
be six feet long from tip to tip.
Moose shed their antlers each year in
the fall. Bears, wolves, and cougars
like to hunt moose.

Newts are amphibians. They can
live to be over 25 years old, so a
newt could be your pet for a long
time! Most newts lay just one egg at
a time. Some newts pretend to play
dead when threatened.

Orcas are often called killer whales.
They don’t usually attack people, but
they kill large ocean animals like sea
lions and whales. No animals hunt
orcas! Orcas can live in both warm
and icy ocean water.

meters tall, but the Little Blue Penguin is only about 45 cm in height.
Penguins are very social and live in
colonies of thousands.

can fly only a short distance. Females can lay 10-20 eggs at a time.

Wild rabbits make their homes by
tunneling up to nine feet underground. They have rooms for nesting
and sleeping. Rabbits can look behind them without even turning their

The longest snake is the Reticulated
Python. It can be 10 meters long!
The Thread Snake is the smallest
and is the length of a toothpick.
Snakes can’t chew their prey, so they
swallow it whole.

The largest turtle, the leatherback
sea turtle, can weigh 900 kg! A turtle cannot crawl out of its shell. Most
turtles and tortoises have a large,
dome-shaped shell, but the African
pancake tortoise has a flat, fexible
shell.

The urial is a wild sheep with reddish
brown fur. Urial males have large
curling horns. Females have shorter
horns. The urial lives in Asia.

There are 23 different species of
vultures. They are social birds and
often fly in large flocks. Vultures
have excellent senses of sight and
smell. They can find a dead animal
from a mile or more away.

The blue whale is the largest animal
the world. Its tongue can weigh as
much as an elephant and its heart as
much as a car. But even though it’s
so big, the blue whale eats tiny
shrimplike creatures called krill.

The X-ray Tetra lives in the Amazon
river. You can see its backbone right
through its skin. It hunts fish,
worms, and crustaceans that live
close to the river bed.

Yaks are herd animals found in the
mountains of central Asia. Many
people use yaks to move heavy loads
through the mountains. The yak eats
grasses, herbs, and wildflowers.

No two zebras have the same
stripes. A zebra’s stripes work like
camouflage, because when zebras
stand in a group it’s hard for predators to see how many of them there
