ALPHABET SOUP You’re an inspiring group. No, really! Mr. Weaver’s good friend, Dr. Jason Woods (the bearded fellow who posed as Dr. Grayson Woods in our “Obama doctor” simulation) was so inspired by hearing about your classes that he wants to learn more about history. He’s a pediatrician, though, who works fulltime in a hospital in Denver, and as much as he’d like to watch a podcast of our class or Skype into it, he just doesn’t have that kind of time. I told him I’d write him a summary of the chapter, but he said no. You guys are the ones that inspired him. He wants to hear it from you. In order to feed his hunger for historical knowledge, you’re going to give him a starter kit, a quick-hitting summary of our nationalism unit. Like we said, he’s short on time, so to do it you’ll be writing him a book: The ABCs of Nationalist Movements in the 1920s. (I know, the title stinks, but you’ll think of a better, more creative one when you make your book.) As a class, we’re going to enlighten him. You and your group will be assigned two countries/regions from the unit list below. You will write a “storybook” in which you use one page for each letter. You only get a four-line rhyme for each letter. (See the example.) In this brief book, you need to do the following: 1) Give it a creative title. 2) Explain each of the terms, events, or people from your assigned country. YOU DO NOT NEED ONE LETTER FOR EACH ITEM. YOU CAN USE MORE THAN ONE TERM PER LETTER. 3) Describe the problems the countries faced regarding foreigners. Are there similarities? 4) Describe the similarities between internal problems of each country. Are there similarities? 5) Explain the goals of each leader/reform movement. 6) Compare/contrast the leaders of each country’s nationalist movements and methods of reform or revolution. 7) Use at least one image per page. Preferably it will be an image of the person mentioned on that page, or of the event mentioned on that page, but sometimes you might need to find an image that simply represents the theme you’re talking about. Be creative. You’ll receive a rubric for the project as we work. And remember, you’re helping a doctor realize his historical dream, so give it your best effort!
