Ms. Drum’s Second Grade
During the beginning of the school year Ms. Drum’s second grade class was
busy reviewing skills and learning the new routines. In September, the class learned
about Johnny Appleseed. The class was able to taste different kinds of apples.
Granny smith apples were voted as their favorite. The class also made applesauce.
The class also loves to add money amounts to a $1.00. The class also participated
in a rummage sale, using play money, to purchase items that were donated.

Mrs. Harrison’s Third Grade
Our class has settled into the school year and we cant believe how fast it
has gone. We welcome a student teacher, Mrs. Ruehter, into our classroom. We
are working hard to adjust to the third day routines. One of our favorite things
about school is our class pet, Spike. Spike is a 2 year old guinea pig with “spiky” fur.
Students take turns each week caring for Spike among other classroom jobs. Another one of our favorite things to do is read! Students worked very hard to pass
a lot of book tests during September. Each week students can earn classroom dollars that can be used to “shop” in our classroom store. Students can’t wait for
"pay day” and a “shopping day.” We are looking forward to our first quarter
awards assembly. This will be the first time students are able to earn honor roll
awards.

High School FBLA
The Green Ridge High School and Middle School FBLA Chapters have completed several different fundraisers, attended the District Officer Leadership Conference, prepared a Community Service Project, and are preparing for District
Competition in February. At the beginning of the year our Chapter Officers attended the Officer Leadership Conference in Clinton, MO. All the Officers
learned interesting facts about fundraising, participated in skill-building activities
and even created proper business attire out of newspaper.
In October the High School Chapter had the “Meal Deals” Fundraiser. This
year’s menu was a BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich prepared by R.B. Doane, a Baked
Potato, Baked Beans, a “Greta’s Cinnamon Roll” and a Bottle of Water. The fundraiser was a success with many local businesses and individuals purchasing meals.
On Veterans Day our High School FBLA Chapter hosted a successful Veterans Dinner as our Community Service Project with music and Veterans Day facts.
After the Dinner, the Speech and Drama club presented the play “The Brothers
Grimm’s Spectaculathon,” by Don Zolidis. Everyone had a great time!
In December we set up the CASA Tree. Our FBLA Chapter hangs ornaments from this tree with names of presents for the women and children of the
CASA shelters. These presents are donated to them for the Holidays. Both our
High School and Middle School FBLA Chapters also decorated the Green Ridge
Community Service Building for the holidays as well.

High School Show Choir
We have had a great start to the school year here at Green Ridge and
are excited to say that our show choirs are back!! Harmony, which is a class
that meets during the school day, has fourteen members and is planning to go
to two or three competitions this year. We have a great group of singers and
performers and are looking forward to the year being a great success. “A
Brand New Year” seems to be the theme of our show for Harmony, which includes great songs from the musical Memphis, “13”, Hairspray, and a few others.
Our girls will also be performing as Mystique makes a comeback. The girls
have fun upbeat songs that talk about….what else….Boys! We also are building our show choir program by starting a 5th/6th Grade show choir called “1st
Edition”. This group was formerly known as “Shine”, but the students agreed
that we needed a new name for a new start. We currently have 36 students in
this group! What a great start! We are also organizing a 7th/8th Grade Show
Choir and will begin rehearsals in November as “New Sensations” If you are
interested in joining this group, see Mrs. Westphal by the end of October.
We have been raising money for the show choir program by selling
suckers to help offset the cost of costumes, music and supplies needed for performances. We are selling Halloween suckers as well as the Yummy Lix suckers
that come in tons of flavors! Suckers sell for only 50cents each and all the
money goes directly to the students in the vocal music department. We will be
raising all the money for costumes collectively as a group, so that each member
does not have to purchase their own costume.
I have been very excited about all the talent that I have seen here at
Green Ridge and am very excited to be teaching in this district. I have found
students to be talented, respectful, and eager to learn. Support our groups by
purchasing a sucker and come to see us perform this year. We will be having an
exhibition night where all our show choir groups will be performing their full
shows for competition. With all this great talent, we are bound to have an EXCELLENT YEAR!

The Technology Department
The Technology Department has added several new items this year to our
school district. We have added several new systems, Smartboards, and printers to
the special education department due to the stimulus funding and grants that the
district received last year, which are not available on a regular basis.
Mr. Ransdell and Mrs. Twenter also wrote a Vocational Enhancement Grant
for the business room which replaced all computers, printers, and chairs. The
Business lab was able to upgrade to new software with a Windows 7 environment. These systems were upgraded with the Vocational Enhancement Grant as
well as additional grant funding, so there was no cost to our district.
The old systems, chairs, and monitors were relocated to the New High
School Lab shown here. Now, teachers can sign up to take their students into
this lab to work on enrichment activities, research papers, Scholastic Reading Inventory, etc. Mrs. Twenter has her students in the lab working on the Descubre
Supersite, which has flash cards, tutorials, listening, speaking, writing, and reading
activities to supplement every chapter.
With today's new resources that come with textbooks, this lab is a wonderful addition to our school district. The best news is that it was completely set
up with the original systems from the business lab. As the world continues to get
more technologically savy, Green Ridge is keeping up with the latest trends.

“Pink Out” Volleyball
The Green Ridge Volleyball team hosted a "Pink Out" game with Tipton on
Thursday, October 6th to raise community awareness about cancer as well as raise
funds to further research. The Art Club and the National Honor Society joined the
volleyball team in raising awareness by extending the "Pink Out" into the school
day. Students were invited to wear pink throughout the day and prizes were awarded
to the craziest pinked-out students, faculty, and staff.
The volleyball team tie-dyed pink t-shirts for playing jerseys and sold them at
the action after the game. The team also sold pink t-shirts for the event through advance sales. For every person wearing pink to the game $1 of their admission was
donated. We also took donations for digs through pledges and after the varsity game,
an auction was held for donated items and the player’s jerseys. Through t-shirt sales,
an auction (auctioneer Kenny Ray, alumni), and donations, the team raised $1975.00.

Counselor’s Corner
National Honor Society
The Green Ridge Chapter of the National Honor Society recently inducted twelve new members. Our new members are Chessa Dixon, Jordan Dove, Jessica Ebeling, Alyssa Haverly, Jackson Ingram, Brittany Maher, Shelbi Mootz, Lydia Needy, Natalya Oliferchuk, Essie Onufreychuk, Joshua Tylar, and Jenny Wirt. Our new members joined with our existing members to
total 26 members for this school year.
The chapter tries to complete a service project for the school or community once a month.
In addition, each member is required to complete five service project hours individually per
quarter. In October, NHS teamed up with FBLA to gather canned goods to donate to a local
food pantry by “Trick or Treating for Canned Goods.” Our November activity will be collecting items for veterans. If you know of a project that would benefit the community or have a
project for individual service hours, please contact Debi Pond at 527-3315.

Opportunities for Underclassmen
Throughout the year, there will be several opportunities for underclassmen including summer
learning experiences, essay contest, leadership events, and poster contests. These opportunities will be posted outside the counselor’s office as well as online. Don’t miss out on these
exciting opportunities!!
Red Ribbon Week
Green Ridge R-VIII celebrated Red Ribbon Week during the last week in October. Activities
for the week included trivia contests, a motivational speaker, and prizes for wearing a Red Ribbon Week ribbon. It was exciting to see all of the students participate in the theme days and
wear their ribbons to show their commitment to being drug free!
