Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
3
October 9th, 2016
From the Pastor’s Desk
The 36th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus is taking place in Rome. The most
important job of GC 36 is to elect a new Father General for the Society. He will replace
Fr. Adolfo Nicolas who is retiring. If that has not happened yet, it will some time this week.
The election is quite a bit different from our presidential election. Delegates to the congregation assess the
needs of the Church throughout the world. What are the issues facing us that we need to engage? Then the
delegates spend some days in what is called “murmuratio.” These are informal discussions amongst themselves about who might be a good candidate to lead. One cannot promote himself or lobby for anyone else.
The delegates trust that the Holy Spirit will guide them through prayer and discernment to choose the right
person. Shockingly, this works!
Jesuits who have participated in the election of a Father General marvel at the palpable sense of the Spirit at
work. It reminds us how important our disposition is to encountering God. How often we make decisions in
haste, or even worse, from a place of fear. The process described is rooted in contemplation, reflection, and
openness to the Spirit. Not a bad method for making any and every important decision.
The Superior General of the Society of Jesus
General Congregation 36th has begun in Rome and the first item in the agenda for the delegates is to elect a
new Superior General. But, who is the Superior General? The man chosen for this position is entrusted with
the universal governance of the Society and its members.
In the Constitution of the Society of Jesus, St. Ignatius wrote a profile of the ideal General. According to St Ignatius, the Superior General “ought to be outstanding in every virtue, most deserving in the Society, and
known as such for the longest time” [735]. More than his practical abilities, the deeper qualities of his mind
and heart, which Ignatius calls “virtues,” should be taken into account. What Ignatius wants for the Superior
General is not just a specialist, but a particular class of person, someone who can lead, above all, with his example, which should be a mirror and model for all Jesuits.
One peculiarity of the office of Superior General of the Society of Jesus is that the man elected for this position is elected for life. However, that does not mean that Father General cannot resign if he has valid reasons. Let us pray for the newly elected Superior General, that he may be a man filled with love for the Society and the Church!
LIGHTWORKS - AN EXPERIENCE OF IGNATIAN PRAYER
lIGHTwORKS is a “light form of work,” a series of limbering up exercises for the spirit.
Physical exercises build muscle, increase stamina, and develop flexibility. So lIGHTwORKS
does for the spirit. These exercises of prayer and reflection, build our relationship with God
and help us become more aware of God’s presence in our lives. It consists of weekly group
sessions. Participants are given scripture passages or reflections from the Spiritual Exercises of
St. Ignatius to pray over each week. These invite us into conversation with God about our lives. Then during the weekly session, there is sharing about these passages and a presentation from one of the facilitators.
There are 16 weekly sessions with 8 before Thanksgiving and 8 in the new year. LightWorks will be offered
at St. Louis U High School this fall on Monday evenings, starting October 17. The sessions will be from 6:30
pm until 8:30 pm each week. For more information or to register, please contact Joseph Milner at 314-9777305 or [email protected].

I ❤College Church because …
I ❤ College Church because I think it's a pretty good example of what Jesus must
have had in mind when he commissioned Peter to build the Church. At College
Church I have encountered God while gazing at beautiful stained glass, during powerful liturgies and when singing my heart out to music of the St. Louis Jesuits, but
also when unexpectedly running into a fellow parishioner around the city. Most of
all though, the community of College Church is a witness to the Kingdom of God.
We are passionate about our faith. We are quick to love and committed to serve.
We mean it when we say All Are Welcome in this place.

The Letters of St. Francis
November 30, 1841 – Peter Kenrick is consecrated as Coadjutor of the St. Louis Diocese by
Bishop Rosati. (We were not an archdiocese until
1847).
Bishop Kenrick divided the city into four parishes: the Old Cathedral (founded in 1834
), College Church (1841), St. Vincent de Paul
(1841) and St.Patrick (1843). A year later in
1844, St. Mary of Victories opened.
Trivia Answer:
To John III, King of Portugal
I hear voices from India rising to heaven
with the complaint that Your Highness is
dealing stingily with them, since only a
very small portion of the abundant revenues which
enrich your treasury from here is being given by
Your Highness to alleviate its very serious spiritual
needs.

OPPOSE Amendment 6
In November, a proposed Missouri constitutional amendment, Amendment 6, will be on
the ballot that would allow a photo ID requirement to vote. Catholic Social Teaching calls
us to family, community and participation. Voter ID laws deny a voice and participation to
many of our brothers and sisters, including those who come to our Outreach Program.
Here are the facts. A photo ID requirement for voting would be:
Costly: It would cost Missouri about $17 million just to implement
Confusing
Cut voters out: About 225,000 registered voters in MO do not have a photo ID. Many of these individuals
are older adults, disabled, low income and African American.
Get involved
Help needed with phone banking to talk to voters about Amendment 6 on the following evenings from
6-9:00 pm:

Training provided the same evening.
