Gilded is a term that refers to giving a deceptively attractive appearance to something. Typically gold plated with less valuable metal underneath. Many sought the comfort of settling with immigrants from their homeland. • 2. Ethnic Islands neighborhoods in major cities where the different immigrant groups lived. II. The new wave of immigrants from eastern and southern Europe and Asia faced increasing prejudice. Nativism – an extreme dislike of immigrants by native born U.S. citizens. • 3. Much of this dislike is grounded in negative stereotypes. • 4. Nativists wanted to close the borders but forgot that their families at one time had once been immigrants themselves. • 5. Culminates in specific quotas and unfair tests to gain admittance to the U.S. – aimed toward immigrants from Asia, southern and eastern Europe. Attitude towards certain immigrant groups. Immigration in the late 1800’s What do these political cartoons from The era tell us about the attitude towards Immigrants? This cartoon again shows how many view immigrants as a drain on America. A more accurate portrayal of the immigrants contribution to American society – We are a nation of immigrants who helped build the foundation of what makes this country great. Think about what has made this country what it is before we start talking about closing our borders to “certain” immigrant groups. Urbanization 1900 • Suppose a new corporation opens for business in Grafton and was going to employ 5,000 people. However, the corporation requires all of its employees to live in the village of Grafton. What would the village have to do to prepare for and accommodate this influx of 5,000 people?
