Bristol and the War to End All Wars
1:00 PM Monday August 4 @ BPL
Sherlock Holmes fans will remember the opening line of “His Last Bow”
as penned by Dr. Watson: “It was nine o’clock at night upon the second
of August—the most terrible August in the history of the world…” The
First World War began that August in 1914, but for Bristol, and the US
Army, the war began in earnest on April 20, 1918 when German and
American ground forces encountered each other for the first time during
a German raid on the French commune of Seicheprey. In this historic
battle, Bristol boys —members of the “Yankee” Division— were front and
center. They were untested troops deployed as “sacrifice” detachments
far forward of the main allied lines.
The Bristol Public Library and the Memorial Military Museum are proud
to co-sponsor a presentation including the story and facts concerning
the battle, a display of vintage artifacts and the personal stories of local
people involved or affected by the events at Seicheprey. Hosted by City
Historian and Bristol Press columnist, Bob Montgomery.

Encore Coming this Summer!
Bristol Public Library and the Manross Memorial Library in
Forestville are implementing a new computer system in early
June. The two Bristol libraries are members of a 30-library
consortium, known as Library Connection, which selected the
new system in 2013. The new system will be up and running by
June 2, 2014. Library users will find using the ENCORE catalog
similar to searching on Google or Amazon. The cloud configuration of the new system will also help contain costs as far less
equipment and maintenance will be required.
Established services such as emailed due date reminders, online
renewal, and the ability to reserve items from home will remain
in place.
Take a look at Encore beginning June 2 on our website or visit
the library.
