The Messenger June 2017 All Saints, Martock Parish Magazine 40p www.martockparishchurch.org.uk This month’s letter... Did you know that National Smile Month runs from May 15th - June 15th ? This is actually organised by the Oral Health Foundation to encourage us to look after our teeth so we are not ashamed to smile. Still it made me think of a poster I picked up in a hospital some years ago; “Smiling is infectious you catch it like the flu. When someone smiled at me today I started smiling too. I walked around the corner and someone saw me grin, When he smiled I realised I had passed it on to him. I thought about the smile and then realised its worth, A single smile like mine could travel round the earth. So if you feel a smile begin, don't leave it undetected, Start an epidemic and get the world infected.” Did you know that it takes over 70 muscles to frown and only 13 to smile so perhaps our excuse for not smiling more is that we are exercising our muscles! One of the good things I’ve noticed about living in our area is the willingness of people I meet to smile, and often to speak. And, as another ‘poem’ reminds us; “Even on the worst days when you wear a frown, someone smiles at you and before you know it your frown turns upside down.” Do you remember the film ‘The King and I’? There’s a song in it that says ‘Whenever you feel afraid, just whistle a happy tune…’ I wonder if smiling would have the same effect. How would it go? ‘Whenever you feel low, just smile a happy smile…’ It could work. My final, and favourite saying, which I try to practice, is “If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours” Christine Donkersley The Lord’s Larder needs: Long Life / UHT Milk - (all sizes, Full, Semi or Skimmed) - Bags of Sugar 1kg Tins of mixed vegetables - pasta sauces - peanut butter - marmite - custard All donations can be left at the back of Church, in the last pew on the right by the book cases. Happy Birthday St Martin St Martin’s Church in Kingsbury Episcopi was a world premier venue on Saturday 20th May, as many months of planning, practicing and celebrating their St Martin 1700th themed events finally culminated in a wonderful service celebrating the 1700th birthday of solider, turned priest, turned peacemaker- St Martin. Approximately 250 people came along for the concert, and it was opened with a fantastic Community Gloria, sung by the choir and repeated by the audience. It was thrilling to see such a large choir, made up of members of the Kingsbury, Martock and Ash church choirs and members of local singing groups, as well as local residents who had joined the group for this special event. The Kingsbury Episcopi Primary School choir, led by Allison Rendell, also shone on the evening, performing on their own at first and then joining the main choir for the Cantata St Martin– a retelling of the life of St Martin, who was for a time Bishop of Tours, written by composer Ronald Corp. The Cantata was melodic, strong and rousing in equal measure, and performed to perfection by the singers in this world premier performance. Sadly Ronald Corp couldn’t be there on the evening due to ill health, but his role of conductor was expertly picked up by Roger Stacey. This really was a celebration of music as well as St Martin, with a selection of beautiful, witty and moving songs written and performed by Crewkerne based Reg Meuross, including a lovely tribute to the evening’s namesake called the Ballad of St Martin. The Kingsbury Band performed two rousing medleys during the course of the concert and afterwards, adding to the wonderful local flavour of the evening, which also included a tribute to the historical women of the community and a performance by Enigma Morris dancers of South Petherton. A lot of planning and organising clearly went into this fantastic celebration and special thanks must go to Simon and Jayne Taylor for all of their hard work and dedication. Simon would also like to say thank you to Ray Willis, the accompanist, the sponsors, performers, and all who were involved and came along on the evening. Despite the terrible weather on the day, spirits were not dampened and the evening ended with a throng of picnicers eating in the church and church rooms, while enjoying complimentary ice creams, apple juice and cider. From the Bishop... As you read this one of the issues dominating the news will be the General Election. Some wit once said: ‘If you don't vote, you get the government you deserve, and if you do, you never get the results you expected.’ Witty that may be, but it is also somewhat cynical and it is one of the things our Archbishops have warned us against. In a Pastoral Letter released to all parishes and chaplaincies they have said that the first obligation we have as Christians is to pray for the election and to recognise the very real burdens and responsibilities carried by those in political life and their families. The second obligation they suggest is to set aside apathy and cynicism and to renew our commitment to the virtues of love, trust and hope in God and in each other. These virtues they suggest should guide and judge our own actions and shape and determine the life of our nation. Faithful, humble, trusting prayer is one mark of true discipleship and I hope that many of us will be engaging in the opportunities to pray with others between Ascension and Pentecost. If we do we will be praying with millions of other Christians across the world, praying that many more people, among them our own friends and families, will discover and open their lives to the love of Jesus Christ. Services are being held in Bath Abbey on 25 May and in the Cathedral on 4 June. At Bath Abbey there will be interactive prayer stations, mixing traditional and contemporary worship and at the Cathedral there will be a Prayer Fayre. We are all invited to take part and to pray together expectantly for the empowering of the Holy Spirit. Come and join your bishops in praying: ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. Rt Rev Peter Hancock Bishop of Bath and Wells From the Memorial Book Constance Illingworth, Archie Brown, Patricia West, Bert Rugg, Walter Olive, Hilda Ashley, Sadiq Mughal, Khadija Mughal, Rose Fenwick,, Brian Spellisy, Marie Cannell, Frederick Turner, Violet Burt, Stanley Williams, Chrissie Burt, Thomas Male, George Harrison, Martin Bennett, Doreen Brownhill, Gordon Knight, George Rayson, Peter Robinson, Carolyn Taylor, Elenora Quinton-Tulloch, Mary Dalton The Archbishops highlight the place of faith in British life Faith has a central role to play in politics and this general election, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York have said. In a pastoral letter to the parishes and chaplaincies of the Church of England, Archbishops Justin Welby and John Sentamu urge people to set aside "apathy and cynicism" and draw new inspiration from the ancient Christian virtues of "love, trust and hope". The three-page letter, intended to be shared in churches from this Sunday onward, encourages voters to remember Britain's Christian history and heritage as well as a concern for future generations and God's creation as they make their decisions. Following divisions of recent years, it calls for reconciliation drawing on shared British values based on cohesion, courage and stability. It upholds marriage, family and households as the building blocks of society which should be "nurtured and supported" as a "blessing". At a time when political differences may be felt more intensely than ever, the Archbishops insist that Christians' "first obligation" during the election and beyond is to pray for those standing for office and recognise the personal costs and burdens carried by those in political life and by their families. But Christians also have a duty to play an active part in the process, they add. The letter also calls for space for faith in political debate and says politicians must be free to speak openly about their own beliefs and convictions and treated fairly for doing so. "This election is being contested against the backdrop of deep and profound questions of identity," they say. "Opportunities to renew and reimagine our shared values as a country and a United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland only come around every few generations. "We are in such a time. "Our Christian heritage, our current choices and our obligations to future generations and to God's world will all play a shaping role. "If our shared British values are to carry the weight of where we now stand and the challenges ahead of us, they must have at their core cohesion, courage and stability." The Archbishops highlight major concerns over poverty, housing and the dangers of "crushing" debt among other issues. They call for a generous and hospitable welcome to refugees and migrants but also warn against being "deaf to the legitimate concerns" about the scale of migration into some communities. They also single out the importance of standing up for those suffering persecution on grounds of faith around the world. Faith, they argue, has a unique role to play in preventing extremism and religiously motivated violence. "Contemporary politics needs to re-evaluate the importance of religious belief," they insist. "The assumptions of secularism are not a reliable guide to the way the world works, nor will they enable us to understand the place of faith in other people's lives. "Parishes and Chaplaincies of the Church of England serve people of all faiths and none. "Their contribution and that of other denominations and faiths to the well-being of the nation is immense - schools, food banks, social support, childcare among many others - and is freely offered. But the role of faith in society is not just measured in terms of service delivery. "The new Parliament, if it is to take religious freedom seriously, must treat as an essential task the improvement of religious literacy." They add: "Political responses to the problems of religiously-motivated violence and extremism, at home and overseas, must also recognise that solutions will not be found simply in further secularisation of the public realm." Pastoral Care in the Martock Benefice What is Pastoral Care? Well...what it’s not is being a ‘busy body’! Several members of the churches in the Martock Benefice visit people to give them company, make sure they are alright, offer help if it’s needed and generally give support and love. Speaking for myself, it’s one of the best bits of my job. I love meeting people, maybe having a laugh, maybe having a hug! I’m looking for new people to join me and you don’t have to go to church to be a visitor! Maybe you already keep an eye on neighbours, friends and family. Would you like to add one or two more to your ‘list’? If this is for you do get in touch, so I can explore the idea with you. I’d be delighted to hear from you! Denise Peacock, Lay Reader and Pastoral Care Co-ordinator, 01935 823875 Mothers' Union Tuesday 2nd May. We went to Kingsbury and joined their M.U. The speaker was our M.U. President -- Mrs Margaret Hendy. She talked on the 23rd Psalm, reading a little then talking about it and answering any questions we had. It was very interesting . Our next meeting is on Tuesday 6th June , our joint Garden Party at 21 Beech Road, Martock, if wet in the Church . Martin, M.U. secretary. Stories and Rhymes in Martock Library Volunteers from All Saints' have been working with Martock Library to provide a monthly half hour session of stories and rhymes for young children, on the third Friday of each month. This has proved very successful, attended mainly by Mums and carers with children 2 years old and under. The library provides shakers and finger puppets, we do the rest! It's great fun and we have agreed to continue. The next session is on Friday, 19th May at 10.30 when Liz Wilson-Chalon will be leading. Volunteers Needed! In 2015 we ran a fireworks event for the community, which was a great success, and we decided to run it every two years– well that time is almost here and we’re looking for people to help in the run up to the event and on the night. None of these events would happen without the hard work and support from the Parish Council, partner organisations and wonderful volunteers, I am looking to pull together a working group to get the planning underway and then I will be asking for volunteers to support at the event also. This year’s event will be on Sunday 5th November, with the fireworks happening at 6.30pm. We are hoping to have a lantern parade and other food and entertainment at the recreation ground during the evening. Please come along to the first planning meeting and get involved. It will be on Tuesday 6th June 7pm at the Market House. On the night duties will include marshalling, people who are happy to man donation pots, people to do teas and coffees and sweets stands etc., also people before the event to put out cones and man the disabled car parks Thank you, Tracey Smith [email protected] Poetry Writing Group On the 13th May we had our first poetry writing event which took place in All Saints Church. 17 brave people took the plunge into the unknown territory of villanelle poetry. From that highly structured form we then ventured into the uncharted wastelands of free verse. Having made a start we agreed to do it again, in about 3 months time. Watch this space and the pew sheet for updates. The topic for the next event will be "Freedom" because that is the theme for National Poetry Day in September.t we agreed to do it again, in about 3 months time. Lesson in Lying A minister told his congregation, "Next week I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17." The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked for a show of hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17. Every hand went up. The minister smiled and said, "Mark has only 16 chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying."
