Rationale for topic
Once upon a time, in a kingdom far far away...
And so our story starts... Shrek has banged his head looking
for bugs in the swamp! He has lost his memory and forgotten all
the fairy tale characters in his story.
Fiona and Donkey will ask us to write him some clues to help
him remember who is who in the world of fairytales! First of
all we will have to know all the stories really well to be able
to describe the characters. We will be sharing lots of stories
together at school but it will help if you share some at home
too such as: Cinderella, The Gingerbread man, Puss in boots,
Goldilocks and the three bears, Sleeping Beauty,
Rumplestiltskin, Rupunzel and any others you can think of!
Many years ago these stories would have been shared verbally so
we will continue this tradition. We will be acting out the
stories and dressing up, as well as writing what happens in
some of our favourites.
The children will learn that every fairy story has “heroes” and
“villains” and that each story has a moral for us to learn
from.
Finally, we will write the clues for Shrek and hide each
carefully drawn character under a flap for him to guess. Each
class will share their clues with Shrek at our fairytale ball
which will be held at the end of the topic. The ball will be
held on Friday 17th March 2017. Please can you send your child
to school that day with a costume of their favourite
traditional tale character? Could this be sent in a bag and can
everything be clearly labelled. We can’t wait to travel ‘FAR
FAR AWAY’ and enter an imaginative world of fairytales.
