TASK B
Read the article and answer the questions below with the whole sentence.
It is a strange anomaly that the diseases which strike most fear into the human heart are not
those which are the biggest killers. Far more people die annually in flu epidemics than from
more dramatic diseases, such as meningitis, but it is illness such as the latter which make the
big newspaper headlines. At the top of the list of panicinspiring viruses is ebola, a diseases so
far connected with the African continent, but the cause of two major scares in Europe, and the
fictional subject of a film in which there is an epidemic of the disease in an American town.
Now ebola is not in fact a major killer. The first two outbreaks, both in 1976, were the
biggest, with a total of 550 victims, of which 340 were fatalities. Subsequent outbreaks have
been smaller, and the death toll consequently less and, indeed, it has not killed anyone since
the 1977 outbreak in Gabon. One reason why ebola gives rise to fears is that the symptoms of
the virus are horrifying – a sudden fever is rapidly followed by a number of painful symptoms
including vomiting, and bleeding and kidney and liver failure. Only about 20 percent of ebola
victims survive, making it one of the most lethal viruses ever identified, and so far there is no
known cure.
1. What illness kills more people than meningitis?
2. In which part of the world does the ebola virus occur?
3. How many people died from ebola in 1976?
4. When was the last time that anyone died from ebola?
5. What organs are destroyed by the virus?
