Book Review
Helen Fisher on the Topic of Sex, Love, and
Attachment
(Interviewed on the “On Being” podcast
<http://onbeing.org>
by Christa Tippet on February 12, 2015)
Helen Fisher is a professor of anthropology at Rutgers
University, a frequent speaker on TED talks, and a consultant
on new relationship paradigms for Match.com. She lays claim to
experience on sex, love, marriage, cheating and divorce. Fisher
also believes that tendencies for dealing with these life
experiences are hard wired into the human brain, but that
culture can change biology. She feels that it is possible to be
married “three times” to the same person for love, children and
then companionship – three stages in one marriage, for
example.

(Continued from page 2)
Helen Fisher’s thesis is that today relationships are formed out
of groups socializing in public spaces. The “dinner date” is
now passé, partly due to the expense, but love is still very
powerful, not to be messed
with and pursued only when
the partners are each free and
available to explore each other
and know each other
intellectually. Fisher suggests
avoiding furthering any love
interest if that person loves
someone else too. “Love is a battlefield,” says the popular
song, and even if the rules have changed, the power of love and
attachment are entrenched.
