Thatched cottages and island romance
Gavnø Castle, one of Denmark’s finest Rococo
castles, is located on an island of its own
surrounded by flower gardens. Originally the site of
a pirate’s castle, Gavnø became a convent in 1398.
Open-air events are held year-round.
A magical and adventurous world of vintage
aeroplanes and automobiles, garden mazes and
heritage castle chambers. Egeskov Castle is not
only one of Denmark’s best preserved 16th century
moat castles, it is also one of the most whimsical –
and fun!
Nestled on an island next to one of Denmark’s most
picturesque villages with thatched cottages, the
350-year-old Valdemar Castle features a hunting
museum, epoch interiors and open-air events.
Visitors can reach the island by a vintage ferryboat,
MS Helge, from the town of Svendborg.

Moat, markets and medicinal herb gardens
Commanding the sea entrance to the city,
Sønderborg Castle was where King Christian II
(1481-1559) was once imprisoned for 17 long
years. The castle features a renaissance chapel and
hosts an annual ring jousting tournament, one of
Denmark’s largest such festivals.
An aristocratic family residence since 1559,
Rosenholm Castle welcomes visitors to its estate rose
gardens and on guided tours of its original Baroque
interiors. The Renaissance castle is also the venue of
private functions and conferences.
The 500-year-old medieval castle is today a living
museum with events held year-round, including the
annual medieval Bishop’s Market. Primarily built for
defence, the castle is surrounded by wetlands and
nature and features a medicinal herb garden.
