In a word, entomology means scientific study of insects. But Entomology not only includes insects but also their relatives ie. Spider, mites and ticks etc. It can also be defined, Entomology is the branch of arthropodology that deals with insects and their relatives ie. Spider, mites and ticks etc. Basic Entomology: It means the scientific study of fundamentals of insects and their relatives ie. Spider, mites and ticks etc. Arthropoda: The word Arthropoda came from two Greek words, “ Arthron” means joint and “Podos” means foot, which together mean “jointed foot or jointed leg”. Thus the jointed legged invertebrate animals under phylum Arthropoda are known as Arthropds. Characteristics of arthropods: 1. Body segmented. 2. Paired jointed appendages, which includes antennae, mouthparts as well as walking legs. 3. Body bilaterally symmetrical. 4. Body covered by an exoskeleton. 5. Usually goes under moulting. 6. Have a tubular alimentary canal, starting at mouth and ends by anus. 7. Have open circulatory systems consisting of a dorsal heart. 8. Respiration done by means of gills, or tracheae and spiracles. 9. Body cavity, hemocoel, is full of blood, haemolymph. Classification of the phylum Arthropoda Kingdom: Animalia Sub-kingdom: Eumetazoa Super-phylum: Ecdysozoa Phylum: Arthropoda Subphylum 1: Trilobitomorpha Class 1: Trilobita Eg.
