Don Quixote de la Mancha: RFQs Chapters 16 – 18

Chapter 16 – “Sancho’s Journey: the Pretend Pilgrims, Terror Underground, Departure
from the Castle and Stampeding Cattle”
1. What does Sancho wishing Don Quixote was with him in the hidden crevice and caverns,
so this would be “an adventure”, tell you about PERSPECTIVE? (perspective: how you
see things, mentally or physically, or how you judge things)
2. Explain what Don Quixote means by the following quote to Sancho, “A poor man who
enjoys liberty will be happier than a wealthy man who has the burden of owing
something to others.”
Chapter 17 – “Adventure with Highwayman, the Defeat of Don Quixote”
1. Don Quixote comes to realize that Captain Roque is not out of place stealing. Explain
why Don Quixote feels that Captain Roque is justified robbing those that travel the
highway to Barcelona.
2. What is the true purpose of the Knight of the White Moon, Samson Carrasco?
Chapter 18 – “Homeward Bound, Settling the Flogging Account, Death of Don Quixote”
1. Sancho convinces Don Quixote to pay him a penny a lashing, so that Dulcinea can “get
cured of the curse”; how does Sancho continue to show his guile? (guile – trickery)
2. How is Don Quixote seeing more and more reality foreshadowing of what happens at the
end of chapter 18?
