PRESS RELEASE For immediate broadcast JACKALOPE : FESTIVAL DE SPORTS D’ACTION Making “extreme” history at the highest inclined tower in the world! Montréal, Monday August 15, 2016– This Friday, August 19, Montréal will witness a major event. High‐level athletes will undertake the first base jump from the top of the Olympic Stadium tower, as part of the 5th edition of JACKALOPE, the action sports festival presented by Lait au chocolat. And it’s all happening during festivities to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Olympic park. JUMP OFF is a first in the history of the Olympic Stadium tower! JACKALOPE will also host the only stop on Canadian soil of World Cup Skateboarding… as well as a major climbing competition, a sport that was recently added to the program of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. “This event has evolved at light speed!” says Micah Desforges, President of Tribu Expérientiel, the agency that produces JACKALOPE, “Last year, we welcomed no less than 20,000 festival goers, and this fifth edition promises a program that’s even more spectacular and entertaining; one that will really bring all kinds of people together. It’s going to be a sporting weekend that’s also about a lifestyle and 100% urban!” Considering the magnitude of the event and the unique experience, the organizers have decided to charge a nominal fee this year (previous editions were free). At just $10 for the day and $15 for the whole weekend (in advance)… and free for kids 10 and under, it’s a great deal! Just come to the ticket window. FOUR REASONS TO COME TO JACKALOPE 1. BE PART OF A HISTORIC EVENT What is base jumping? It is an extreme sports whereby athletes jump from a fixed object, with a parachute. “Base” is actually an acronym—B.A.S.E.—meaning: building; antenna; bridge; earth. According to Marc‐André Denault, JUMP OFF ambassador and runner in the Olympic Torch Relay, “Competing athletes unanimously agree that The Montréal Tower at the Olympic Park is one of the best locations in Canada for base jumping, considering the inclined pylon structure, which makes the jump very safe. The symbolism of the Tower also represents a dream come true.” In total, 10 athletes will make the jump, including: freestyle skiing Olympian, Pierre‐
Alexandre Rousseau, Canadian base jump pionner, Bertrand Cloutier, wheelchair athlete, Lonnie Bissonnette, and others. Competition details:  At 165 metres and a 45‐degree angle, the Montréal Tower is the highest inclined tower in the word.  Jumpers can count on a 60‐foot free fall of one second, followed by a parachute glide of 490 feet lasting about 40 seconds.  The precision landing part of the competition includes a zone of about 50 by 120 feet on the Esplanade Financière Sun Life at the Olympic Park.  Special base jump equipment is used, and jumpers have only one parachute, contrary to jumps from an airplane.  Jumpers in the competition must have completed at least 200 base jumps, including 10 in the last 3 months, as well as more 500 parachute jumps and 3 years parachuting experience.  For a successful jump, wind speed at the top must not exceed 25km/hour and ideally, the wind should be at the jumper’s back, with a possible 90‐degree variance. 2. SEE THE OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS OF TOMORROW Two of the five new disciplines announced by the IOC for the Tokyo Games in 2020 will be presented at JACKALOPE: climbing and skateboarding. This second discipline will feature several headliners, including: Leticia Buffoni (Brazil), Rio Sejiri (Japan), Thomas Vintre (Czech Republic), Benjamin Garcia (France), Greg Lutzka (United States), Chris Haslam (Canada), etc. So this is an unprecedented opportunity for the next generation of up and comers to “hang out” with the elite at this stop on the World Cup tour. 3. ENJOY AN UNFORGETTABLE URBAN LIFESTYLE EXPERIENCE JACKALOPE is certainly all about sports—but it’s an incredible urban lifestyle experience as well. It’s an opportunity to enjoy facilities designed to get every last bit of excitement out of summer. This means JACKALOPE will have all kinds of stuff going on: DJ High Klassified, The Posterz + Ragers, etc., as well as several food trucks and pop up shops, after parties, and more. Organizers have also set up stands to enhance the spectator experience during the competitions. What’s more: we all know Montréal is a cycling city. So JACKALOPE is also presenting a fixed gear criterion from IBIKE. 4. GO CRAZY! In between competitions, the public is invited to try skateboarding and slacklining. And why not combine a practical need with a pleasurable one? Take part in a water gun battle that doubles as a way to get cool on a hot day... and an open‐air yoga session helps you regain a bit of zen attitude even as the JACKALOPE madness swirls around.
