2014-2015 Campaign Report - Greater Hartford Legal Aid

Our Work
Our client and her husband had a profoundly autistic child. Our
client devoted herself to caring for the child. Her husband behaved cruelly
towards his family, though, going so far as to turn off the heat and electricity.
GHLA obtained court orders forbidding the husband from interfering with
the heat and electricity, and ultimately won a dissolution and sole custody of
the child for our client.
GHLA assisted the family of a child with severe anxiety in connecting to resources and advocated for homebound instruction
to help the child to transition back in to a school program.
Initially the child was not able to return to school, but did actively participate
in tutoring. We then advocated for the child to be referred to an out-of
-district therapeutic program to meet her unique emotional/mental health
needs. We urged that the application be sent to a state approved school
that had recently been off the school district’s “radar” for placement. The
school district agreed, and the family and child loved the school. The child
attended regularly and happily, and was even named “Student of the Week”
in June 2015.
GHLA represented a client who worked as a server and cook at
a local restaurant. The employer did not pay her regularly or pay her
wages due. After the GHLA attorney’s demand letter did not result in settlement, the attorney filed a wage complaint at the CT Department of Labor.
Negotiations with the employer’s attorney resulted in the client receiving
thousands of dollars in back pay, a favorable letter of reference from the
employer and her final paycheck for the amount she was lawfully owed.
“The case took a long time (more than 5 years) and GHLA and the attorney
handling my case were always available until the last minute and we won all
the way. I got all the information that I needed to know and this made me
make decisions that made the outcome of the case successful. ”

Executive Director
Greater Hartford Legal Aid, Inc.
I am pleased to present this 2014-2015 Annual Report on behalf of the Greater
Hartford Legal Aid Foundation (GHLAF). Your generous support helps to
provide comprehensive legal advocacy that strengthens communities and transforms
lives.
2014 marked GHLA’s celebration of 100 years of legal aid in Greater Hartford,
and our ongoing advocacy for clients facing the multilayered challenges of poverty.
Economic instability and opportunity inequality for legal aid’s clients can lead to
homelessness, no chance to escape violence, diminished educational and employment
achievement, and living without basic human necessities such as food and health care.
Your support helped poor people access the legal assistance they needed to meet these
challenges, survive and at times even thrive.
GHLA attorneys’ work touched thousands of people living in poverty. They handled
more than 3,600 cases, assisting approximately 9,400 people in the households of their
clients. Another 3,400 benefitted from GHLA’s community legal education programs.
To maximize its reach, GHLA works with pro bono attorneys, social service providers and other groups within the low-income community, and advocates on the systemic
issues and cases affecting large segments of GHLA’s client population. In one class
action alone (Briggs v. Bremby), GHLA attorneys have asserted the legal rights of about
30,000 individuals.
GHLA is able to provide access to justice because of its vibrant partnership with those
who support our mission –including you, foundations and other funders, and government and community leaders. As sufficient and steady funding for legal aid remained a
challenge, the support from the GHLA Foundation provided crucial stability that helped
to preserve staffing and service levels. The generosity of our individual donors, our
Board members, firms, and community foundations remained strong. We are proud to
report we raised an astonishing total of $472,975.
The Foundation extends special thanks to United Technologies Corporation and its
attorneys, who gave so generously to the Campaign. They once again increased their
donation amount from last year’s outstanding gift, by contributing an inspiring and
record-breaking $195,296, with nearly 100% participation from its Connecticut
attorneys. The Foundation owes enormous gratitude to the ongoing, tremendous generosity of UTC and its attorneys.
Also, we want to highlight and thank the attorneys of Shipman & Goodwin for their
extraordinary gift of $50,000, and the attorneys of Robinson+Cole for their outstanding gift of $34,000. Finally, a heart-felt thanks to our Board members for the work
you provide throughout the Campaign season to secure the firm and corporate donations, and for your personal contributions.
As I pass on leadership of the Foundation to the very capable hands of Ricardo Anzaldúa,
as the incoming President, I want to extend to him my thanks for his outstanding past
service to the Board and for his willingness to continue to serve. It has been my sincere
pleasure to have worked with such a terrific group of people, joining together to provide
some measure of help to Greater Hartford Legal Aid as they tirelessly pursue their mission of justice for those in need.
Very truly yours,
Thomas R. Kasper, President
