Slow Down, Time Isn't That Important
It took the violent and tragic death oi a.
kindly old man to slow down hell-bent roaring
freight trains coming through the dty.
For too long now these speeding demons
have been a threat to thc lives and property of
residents.
Wc don't know who's to blame for this unfortunate accident. Whether the Southern
Pacific puts such demands on its trainmen that
they must slam recklessly Ihruugh inhabited
areas to keep up a schedule or, whether it's
over-zealous trainmen who pour on thc coal
during a run so that they can relax at the other
end In their sung featherbed.
Maybe it's the residents of Marfa who arc
to blame. There Is an ordinance on the city's
books regulating train speeds through thc city.
But have we enforced that ordinance? The law
says 40 miles per hour through Marfa. If any
freight has been within that limit since thc law
went on thc books then we've missed it.
Wc fully understand thc situation. Railroads must meet the competition and they've
got to pour It on to deliver the goods. They must
compete with speeding truck carriers who
make our highways a freight race track.
But, an unfortunate accident has, now
shocked people Into the full realization that
laws are made for everyone and they should be
enforced or wiped off the books.
