Visiting the YMCA of the Rockies has been a special family time for many years. Our oldest
graduated from high school this year, and so it was the last time we would come as a family
living all together. It was also a first for our newest, youngest child, who has a very special
connection to the Y. Our family arrived at the Y for our summer vacation to discover we were
in the same cabin we had been in before. There are a lot of cabins at the Y, so to be in the
same one twice is pretty unlikely. As soon as I saw the cabin, I remembered. I remembered
what God had promised me as I stood on the porch almost seven years ago. “The next time
you are here, you will have another child.” We had been back to the Y twice since I had heard
that promise, and twice I had felt let down. But God did not mean the Y in general. “Here” was
the exact same porch I had been standing on. What a glorious, humbling experience to hold
my new son on that porch! Thanks to the generosity of cabin donors, our family has been
making memories and having unbelievable experiences at the Y for as long as we can
remember. The YMCA of the Rockies has impacted my family by drawing us closer together,
giving us shared experiences and memories. Spending time at the Y allows our family to get
away from the busyness of life and distractions at home. We are able to take advantage of all
the free family-oriented activities – including mini-golf, swimming, roller skating, family
basketball games, disc golf, hiking, bingo, and tennis – and just have fun together. We have
visited the Y with both sets of grandparents and extended family for reunions. It has been the
perfect place for us to reconnect with family visiting from other states. Someday, we look
forward to making memories with our future grandchildren, as well.

Our two kids, now 10- and 7-years-old,
have enjoyed day camp at YMCA of the
Rockies for quite a few years. As a
parent, I appreciate the
Christian atmosphere
and the Christian values
that the Y emphasizes
in all aspects of its
programming. It’s good for
our kids to get to interact with
other kids from across the country
– and that’s not something you can get at
any camp! They love to have a real mountain
experience, from horseback riding and
hiking to trout fishing.
The time we spent at the YMCA of the
Rockies as a family is important because
we get to be away from our normal busy
environment and have fun together as a
family. We love the Rockies and getting to
enjoy God’s marvelous creation together is a

EVERY
SEASON
We have come to love the YMCA of the Rockies over
the last three years and have visited multiple times
for multiple reasons. We have attended Chinese
Heritage Camp, come with a Girl Scout Troop and
have spent time together as a family. Being at a place
that all five members of our family can enjoy is a rare
thing to find! Being away from our home, relaxing and
having fun together has been the greatest reward. Our
three children are 13, 19 and 35. Our oldest son is
developmentally delayed, so finding activities we can
do together and enjoy is a challenge.
Our 19-year-old son left for college in another
state this August. To say that we all miss him is an
understatement! He and our oldest son are best
friends. It has been hard for all of us. We miss being
together and making fun memories. Our time at the
Y is even more special now: we laugh, joke and feel
complete as a family. Thank you for supporting a place
that encourages families to spend time together and
make special memories.

BUILDING
CONFIDENCE
I think there’s a certain sense of “self” my son gains at your
camp.Tripp has autism and is non-verbal. The school he
attends does not have a great social atmosphere, but the
opportunity to spend time outside with other kids in
a completely new environment at the YMCA of the
Rockies builds his spirit. He enjoys watching the
other kids play and have fun because he is so
used to being around kids who are not happy.
More importantly, Tripp has learned to have
more confidence in himself by coming to
camp. He has taught himself that life is
good and that play doesn’t have to be
controlled. Without camp, he wouldn’t
have the opportunity to learn outdoors.
My wife and I know he’s in good hands and
feel safe enjoying activities on our own
while he’s in day camp.

library, enjoyed the parachute games, giggled at the taxidermy
animals in Sweet Memorial and even liked the hiking (from his
luxury perch in a kid carrier). Even in the winter, we had lots of
outdoor play!
My wife Elizabeth was grateful to be able to spend New Year’s Eve
and Day doing something special. Because we move so frequently
as a military family, it’s hard for us to build traditions. I know that
wherever we go, the time we spent at the YMCA of the Rockies will
always be a treasured memory. We are so thankful to donors for
their kindness and generosity.

From June 29-July 5, 2014, YMCA of the Rockies
had the honor of hosting the 18th YMCA World
Council Meeting, bringing together YMCA delegates
from 83 different nations and regions. The YMCA
Movement is found in 125 nations and regions
around the world. The YMCA began in England in
1844 and didn’t take long to grow. Eleven years
later in 1855, YMCAs from around Europe met in
Paris for the first YMCA World Council Meeting.
Since then, meetings have occurred approximately
every four years on different continents.
The 2014 YMCA World Council Meeting was only
the third time YMCAs have convened in the United
States, and the second time this event has been
hosted at YMCA of the Rockies (the first in 1981).

Each morning began
with 45 minutes of
Christian worship,
led by a different
continent each
day, uniting all
delegations
in Christian
faith. Following
worship, plenary
sessions and small
group meetings took
place throughout the
18TH WORLD COUNCIL
day. Each night, American music was the featured
entertainment, including performances by an AfricanAmerican gospel choir, Cowboy Brad (whose John Denver
music was extremely popular), the Queen City Jazz Band, and traditional Native
American drumming and dance.
There was also a day of excursions, including a trip to Snow Mountain Ranch,
touring Rocky Mountain National Park, exploring community YMCAs on the Front
Range, and special service projects – all led by YMCA of the Rockies volunteers,
who did an outstanding job welcoming our global guests and exhibiting our core
values.
Our YMCA was honored and excited to bring the entire world to our doorstep.
Our impact reaches far beyond our properties and extends across oceans and
continents. The delegations represented were in awe of our facility, volunteers and
staff – they loved spending time here! The 18th YMCA World Council Meeting was
truly a unique, inspirational experience for the YMCA of the Rockies.

FEELING
NORMAL
AGAIN
Luca was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
one month before her third birthday. The doctors said
the leukemia cells are basically gone from her bone
marrow; unfortunately, it’s a two-and-a-half year
process to make sure the cancer stays away, but what
they are doing is working so far!
Last year was a blur. Luca spent a large part of the
year in a hospital undergoing spinal taps, chemo,
tests and more. Many of the hospital admissions were
spent in isolation, in the comfort of our cozy hotel
room. We called it that because it helped to make us feel
like we were on vacation. Throughout all of this, Luca was
incredible and never complained once. Luca’s big sister,
Kaiya, is also incredible. She bounced around between
friends and family while our schedules were in flux. It
really took a toll on my husband Pete, who still had to go
to work and help take care of Kaiya. I just wanted it all to
go away so we could be a “normal family” again.

Comfort to
Everyone
Thank you so much for giving us the most amazing
weekend getaway. We were at the Y in October
during Pete’s birthday and our ninth wedding
anniversary. This was the first time we were able
to get away as a family, including our two golden
retrievers. This was the perfect way to reconnect
as a family. How great it was not to have a single
worry the whole time! Kaiya and Luca spent most of
their time in the Craft & Design Center, making tie
dyes and painting. We also enjoyed swimming,
playing on the playground, hiking with our dogs
and having a cabin to spread out in and play
games.
Words cannot express how grateful we are to
the YMCA and the G.R.A.C.E. Program! Thanks
for thinking about our little ones and helping
us to feel “normal” again.

EDEN
“This past summer was a special one for me,” says Michele, a CCO cabin
counselor. “I’ve always loved seeing how much growth and improvement
children go through while they’re at camp, but it wasn’t until I met Eden
that I realized the impact I truly have on them.
“Eden was shy and timid, obedient as could be, a really fantastic kid.
The first night, she was homesick but tried to hide the fact that she was
crying. It broke my heart and after I calmed her down I knew I wanted to
teach her to be strong. I knew she was the type of child who needed to
be reminded of how special she was and that she should share her gifts
with the world. She clung to me constantly, so I needed to teach her
to be confident in herself, spend time with the other kids and try new
things. All week I checked up on her and kept devotions around selfconfidence and self-esteem.
“That week, I was scheduled to go rafting and would be gone all day.
I remember getting off the bus, weary and drained, worried that Eden
had been lost without me. That’s when I saw her laughing with her cabin
mates, covered with dirt, a huge grin on her face. I knew then that I
had made a difference in Eden’s life. She had grown out of her shell and
stepped out of her comfort zone. She spent the rest of the week with
the new friends she had made. I had done my job!”

TOGETHER
The YMCA of the Rockies has impacted
my family by drawing us closer
together, giving us shared experiences
and memories.
Spending time at the Y allows our family to get away
from the busyness of life and distractions at home. We are able to take
advantage of all the free family-oriented activities – including mini-golf,
swimming, roller skating, family basketball games, disc golf, hiking, bingo, and
tennis – and just have fun together. We have visited the Y with both sets of
grandparents and extended family for reunions. It has been the perfect place
for us to reconnect with family visiting from other states.

MEMORIES
CELEBRATED
My family came yearly to the YMCA of the Rockies until my husband passed
away in 2004. That last year was special because his parents came along
too. John loved the outdoors and all that the Y offered. It brought us all
closer as a family and allowed him to share his love of the outdoors with our
daughters. We came one year after his death with all of our extended family
to celebrate his life.
The Y has such an important place in my heart. It was our first “real”
vacation and we have so many memories of the drive there from Texas. After
John passed away I didn’t know if we would come back but I still longed for it.
I was able to share my love for the Y with my new husband and his children,
as well as mine. They are all college age now but they had as much fun as they
did when they were younger. I was unsure how my children would feel sharing
this special place that they had with their dad but they were happy to relive
their memories and create new ones with new family members.
I would like to say a huge thank you for giving us such special memories!
