Healthy eating – developing programs that support health and promoting educational opportunities; improving food nutrition in schools and restaurants, etc. Active lifestyle – creating and supporting ways for residents to encourage healthy behaviors and connect through physical activities. Positive outlook – contributing to the community culture by highlighting the positive impact that physical activity and healthy eating can have on a person’s emotional wellbeing. The uFit Challenge The uFit Challenge was our first program to engage the community We brought 10 challengers into the program that acts as a catalyst for not just improving their health, but also their enthusiasm about improving their health in a sustainable way—particularly focused on how health integrate into everyday lives. We created a supportive environment with dedicated community members and professionals and eliminated common obstacles to a healthy lifestyle, awarding uFit Points for healthy activities. Eliminating obstacles The uFit Challenge addressed several obstacles: Camaraderie – Improving health is easier when you aren’t alone, and our committee and fellow challengers provided support. Cost – The uFit Challenge was free thanks to in-kind support from Aspen Athletic Clubs, Urbandale Hy-Vee, and The Iowa Clinic. Education – We surrounded the challengers with professionals—trainers, dietitians, and physicians—that could identify actions to improve their health. Exploration – We exposed challengers to new foods, new exercises, new people, and new activities in an effort to find ways to make getting healthy fun. What we learned The uFit Challenge was an overwhelming success based on the improvements in biometric data. We had an amazing group of challengers that were committed to improving their health. We did see some people disengage, some for happy reasons (pregnancy), some for not as happy reasons, and some that just weren’t ready or didn’t believe that the uFit Challenge was a fit for them. Our goal is to learn from this year via feedback from challengers and sponsors, and make the uFit Challenge even better in 2014. uFit Challenge Data Challengers did the work 20 biometric screens offered (before and after) 10 initial and final assessments offered at Aspen 10 initial and exit nutrition interviews at Hy-Vee Over 300 trips to Aspen Hundreds of additional at home workouts Over 80 trips to Hy-Vee for Begin courses Over 400 entries into food journals Nearly 60 appearances at uFit Challenge events Over $42,000 in receipts collected from Urbandale Hy-Vee during the Challenge Challenger results Over 100 pounds lost 9 of 10 challengers lost weight Average challenger lost 4.3% of their body weight Six challengers lost over 5% Seven challengers completed before and after biometric screens Every challenger improved at least one key health metric—blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure Nearly 2,600 uFit points earned Challengers connected and made it fun uFit Challenge Results Nichole Dealt with sickness and a death of a family member Mindi Is expecting a baby later this year— congratulations!
