Louis V. Hencken Housing Service Scholarship February 7, 2017 Dear Housing Professional Staff and Council Presidents: University Housing and Dining Services is now accepting nominations for the Louis V. Hencken Housing Service Scholarship. This scholarship is a prestigious Housing Scholarship recognizing the past academic year contributions of outstanding student leaders by class standing in our on-campus community. Nominations may be made by any Housing Professional Staff member with a limit of one nomination per yearly service award. A minimum of three awards shall be given annually based on years of service to the University Housing and Dining Department to students who have maintained continuous residence in oncampus University Housing (not including summers). For example, a recipient of the Four Year Service Award must have lived in an on-campus residential community during their entire four years but will be evaluated primarily on contributions made during the one year being evaluated. The general guideline for the Scholarships shall be as follows: One Year Service Award i. - 10% of available scholarship funds ($1000 each in 2016) ii. Two Year Service Award -20% of available scholarship funds ($2000 in 2016) iii. Three Year Service Award - 30% of available scholarship funds ($3000 in 2016) iv. Four Year Service Award -40% of available scholarship fund (none awarded in 2016) If for any reason there are no qualified/selected candidates in one or more of these categories, the dollars available will be divided among the other selected winners. In order to be nominated one must: (a) be a full-time student attending Eastern Illinois University; (b) be a student completing their first year of school through graduate school; (c) reside in some form of University owned housing during the entire period of time for which the award has been earned and must return to university owned housing the following year; (d) have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better on a 4.0 scale and be in good disciplinary standing; (e) be or have been taking an active role in the Residence Hall Association, National Residence Hall Honorary, or be an individual in a housing unit’s governing organization at some point in their EIU student years; (f) all else being equal, consideration will be given to candidates’ contribution to the university community during the academic year being evaluated; (g) must commit to being active in a substantial leadership position the following fall and spring semesters; (g) financial need is a consideration. Step 1: To nominate a student leader: Submit a letter of nomination through our MachForm on our website located at http://www.eiu.edu/housing/hsgscholar_nom.php. The nomination letter must be submitted to Jody Stone at [email protected] by 4:30 pm on Friday, March 10, 2017. Each candidate shall be evaluated on the following criteria (These reflect the qualities of the name sake of the scholarship): -Demonstrated positive impact made on their living environment -Demonstrated mentoring of fellow residents -Served as a positive role model for their residential community -Going above and beyond expectations of position or role -Special consideration will be given to volunteer activities Step 2: After the letter of nomination is received: Before March 21, an on-line application for the scholarship will be provided to the nominees via their Eastern Illinois University email address. Nominees must complete their on-line application at http://www.eiu.edu/~housing/hsg_scholar.php by 4:30 pm on Friday, April 7, 2017. This award will be presented to this year’s recipient at the NRHH/RHA Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 5pm. All nominees will be expected to attend the NRHH/RHA Awards Banquet and to attend a reception in their honor just prior to the banquet on Thursday, April 27, 2017, at 4:15pm. Recipient Selection: The Louis V. Hencken Housing Service Scholarship Selection Committee will make the final selection after reviewing both the letter of nomination and the nominee’s self-completed application. The selection committee consists of a minimum of three individuals with a majority being residence hall professional staff and /or senior level housing officials. Scholarship History: This is the 11th year for the Louis V. Hencken Housing Service Scholarship. The 2016 recipients were 1st year: Fallon Kitchens, Amanda Wetzel, Niev Hans; 2nd year: Marissa Damore; and 3rd year Robert Thomas. The 4th year scholarship was not awarded in 2016.
