KNIGHT NEWS
OCTOBER 2016
Ten seniors recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation
Four seniors from Hoban—Bryce Dzubara, Colin Fricker, Carson Keenan and Victoria Woodburn —
have been named as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition. In addition, six
Hoban seniors have been named National Merit Commended Students: Mara Bahmer, Dominic
Congeni, Andrew Hayes, William Schell, Lukus Stricker and Anthony Ursetti. They are pictured above.
The designations are based on the scores they earned on the PSAT they took as juniors. For more
information on the program, click HERE. Revolutionary War Days return to Hoban
Colonial America returned to
East Akron on the Hoban
campus on Sept. 13-14, for
over 1,000 kids from area
elementary schools, thanks to
the faculty and students of
Hoban. It took an army of
Hoban students led into battle
by history teacher Jason
Anderson to create an outdoor
Colonial America Living History
Experience. Anderson,
accompanied by his fellow
teachers, created a
Revolutionary War
encampment on Hoban’s east field. The high school students served as team leaders working with
elementary school students. Two weeks later, the group traveled to Mount Vernon to work with
hundreds of families and children to educate them on Colonial America. For more information and
pictures, click HERE.

Project HOPE has returned
Project HOPE is a program where Hoban students gather
every Wednesday after school to prepare and serve food to
people in Akron experiencing homelessness. Students spend
the evening conversing and building relationships. Project
HOPE has truly become an integral part of both the Hoban
and the Akron communities. The ministry exists because of
the kindness of so many who are invested in the program. We will continue to head
out to the streets of Akron every Wednesday evening, and we invite you to join in
with us through your participation or donations. If you feel called to donate or have
questions about Project HOPE, please email Kelsey Sees [email protected].

Knights retain shillelagh with 24-0 shutout
over STVM
The Knights defeated rival St. Vincent-St. Mary 24-0 at
Infocision Stadium last Friday. All three Hoban
touchdowns came in the second quarter. The first was
after a blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone
and then two short drives for touchdowns after the
defense gave the Knights great field position. Grant
Kersh then gave the Knights the last three points with a
field goal. Highlights of the game can be seen HERE. Led by seniors, students carry on the venerable
Mum Day tradition
In an unrivaled display of school spirit, students observed
Mum Day on Friday, Sept. 23. Mum Day, the day of the
St. Vincent-St. Mary football game, was the climax of
spirit week. Following an ancient Hoban tradition, from
the time students entered the building in the morning
until the pep rally in the afternoon, students maintained
an eerie silence--in the halls, in the classrooms, at lunch.
The night before, at the senior lock-in, the halls were
bedecked with posters, streamers and theme
decorations. Silence was finally broken with the
traditional "Give Me an H" cheer to start the assembly.
Check out Fox 8 for special TV coverage of Mum Day.
