HOUSTON ACADEMY OF MEDICINE –
TEXAS MEDICAL CENTER LIBRARY

October – December 2005
Dinner With…Houston’s
Most Fascinating
T
he Friends of the Texas Medical Center Library hosted its biennial Dinner
With . . . Houston’s Most Fascinating on October 27th at Houston Country Club.
The tables sported amazing centerpieces: five-foot azalea
trees. These were subsequently to be planted on the grounds
of the Hospice at the Texas Medical Center, where they will serve as
a beautiful living tribute to the generous Houstonians who support the
outstanding community programs spearheaded by the Friends.
The proceeds of this year’s dinner will benefit Project Outreach, a
Friebbernds-sponsored comprehensive program created to provide
health information services to medically underserved populations in
Houston, as well as the Hospice at the Texas Medical Center. The event,
chaired by Friends Carolyn Davis Alexander and Betsy Parish, attracted
more than 250 guests and successfully raised more than $100,000 for
Project Outreach, which is implemented via the HAM-TMC Library’s

From the Executive Director
H
appy Holidays to
all! In this season
of giving and
thanks, we devote this issue
to our fundraising efforts,
acknowledging the donors
who give funds, materials,
equipment and best of all –
their support, approval and
their enthusiasm. The biennial
fundraising event, Dinner with
Houston’s Most Fascinating,
sponsored by the Friends of the
Texas Medical Center Library
and held October 27, 2005, was
a delight and a great success.
Another important fund raising
event is the Match-Makers. This
past year the John P. McGovern
Foundation has agreed to match
all donations up to $20,000. The
Library needs 200 Match-Makers
– just 200 Match-Makers with a
gift of $100 each will meet this
challenge! The money raised
through this match-challenge will
be deposited in the McGovern
Endowment for the support of
the Library’s historical collections. Consider being a donor.
The library continues to offer
valued resources. A new data
base, UpToDate, has been added
to our collection and is one of
the most complete sources of
synthesized information in
internal medicine and its sub-
specialties of family medicine,
obstetrics and gynecology,
and pediatrics.
In the New Year the Library
will continue to offer classes
such as Evidence-based Medicine
Databases. See our web page
for full details: HYPERLINK
“http://resource. library.tmc.edu/
class/schedule.php” http://resource.
library.tmc.edu/class/schedule.php
Do participate in fund
raising, use our resources
and attend our classes! See
this issue for details. We hope
to see you soon!
Again Happy Holidays and
the Best for the New Year!

A Challenge Has Been Delivered —
T
he John P. McGovern
Foundation has
agreed to match
all donations up to $20,000. Now
the Library needs Match-Makers
to help meet this challenge. Over
half the funds have been
raised. Ninety Match-Makers
with a gift of $100 will meet
this challenge.
Please consider a donation
now to help support our historical collections. Gifts to
the HAM-TMC Library qualify
as charitable donations.
The money raised through
this challenge grant will be
deposited in the McGovern
Endowment for the support of
the Library’s historical collections. These include a magnificent collection of books by and
about William Osler, a worldclass rheumatology collection,
nearly 40,000 photographs,
a nineteenth century public
health collection, several hun-
dred archival collections documenting the history of health
care in Houston, and early texts
documenting the founding of
many medical specialties.
