In fact, you won’t even have to learn anything new - just apply a few simple rules that you already know. Hair is nothing more than a pliable fiber. Just like the clothing we wear, hair comes in fine and coarse textures. Hair care is simple and straightforward - you use the same steps to care for your hair as you would to care for a nice sweater. Here are the rules: 1.) When washing your hair, use a mild water temperature. You’d never dream of putting your sweater in the washer with the temperature set on hot. It would shrink and distort your fine sweater in a matter of moments. The same applies to your delicate hair. Hot water leaves your hair’s protective surface layer (the cuticle) raised. This rough surface not only makes your hair look dull, but also leaves your hair unprotected. A raised cuticle layer causes color fading, as the hair becomes over porous and the hair color washes right out, leaving hair looking duller than ever. As with clothing, hot water causes fading. A raised cuticle also causes your hair to be prone to environmental damage. Vital moisture can leave the hair in the winter months, causing dry, unmanageable hair. In the humid summer months, too much moisture can be retained, causing styles to go limp and flat. A mild water temperature gives you hair that is more consistent from day to day, and helps hair color vibrancy last for weeks, as it should. 2.) Use a mild solution, designed specifically for the type of fiber (hair) being cleansed. Tide® detergent is great for washing your jeans, however a sweater requires the gentleness of Woolite®. It’s the same with your hair. Fine hair is very different than coarse hair, and if that hair has highlighting, solid tone hair color or has been permed, it has even more specialized needs. Today’s professional line hair care products are geared to specific hair type and their specific needs. For optimum results with your hair, consult with a licensed professional hair designer. They are highly trained and experienced in professional use and application. There is no substitute for professional experience and know how. You won’t find that in the drug store. Buy professional hair care for professional results. Take care not to over-stretch a delicate fiber when it’s wet. You wouldn’t dare wring out your sweater fresh out of the washer! It would stretch and distort. It would never be the same. The same applies with your hair. All organic fiber is weakest when wet, and your hair is no different. Start detangling (combing) your hair at the ends and work your way towards the scalp. Excessive stretching through the use of a brush or fine tooth comb on wet hair will ultimately destroy it’s integrity, and it will never style the same again. For long hair with excessive tangling, a conditioner must be used and the hair should sprayed with a detangling solution prior to combing. 4.) Don’t use extreme heat when drying a delicate fiber. Tossing your sweater in a hot dryer is guaranteed to ruin it. It’s the same with your hair. Using a blow dryer set to a higher temperature is acceptable when your hair is quite damp. Always reduce the blow dryer heat setting as your hair begins to dry. Always use a professional line thermal protectant spray so you hair only dries off, and doesn’t dry out. 5.) Avoid excessive heat when ironing a delicate fiber (hair). An iron set on cotton will singe a delicate garment in a single second. Today’s modern flat irons can reach temperatures of up to 400 degrees, and that can destroy your hair in that same moment! Apply a second application of thermal protectant spray before applying this intense heat will help minimize the toll a flat iron takes on your hair. (It’s best to ask your salon professional for how-to instructions/lessons BEFORE you use one of these high heat tools). If they won’t teach you how to use your styling appliances, find another hair designer. Half of styling hair with heat is the cooling process. As with your clothing, the fiber must cool in position in order for it to take a crease, otherwise it falls away to it’s original position. When styling with any heat appliance, allow your hair to cool in position for a moment before you release it. It will ‘magically’ behave and take the desired shape. So there you have it. Five easy steps to better hair care, easier styling and trouble free hair. In review: 1.) Use a mild water temperature. 2.) Use a mild cleansing solution. 3.) Don’t over-stretch your wet and weakened hair. 4.) Don’t use extreme heat to dry your hair. 5.) Don’t use extreme heat to iron your hair. Commit them to memory (associate the five steps to the five fingers on your hand). You’ll see the difference immediately and your hair will be far more consistent form day to day! Good luck and we’ll see you at the salon! Parma 216-661-6887 Broadview Hts. 440-582-9100 Copyright © Illusion Unlimited Salons 2012 Strongsville 440-572-7704
