Honoring the Friends
The Friends have been a vital part of the
CRRL’s success since the very beginning. Even
before the Central Rappahannock Regional
Library was established in 1969, the Friends
of the Library were dedicated to bringing a
regional library to the area. Recently retired
Library Director Donna Cote and long-serving
From left to right, Miriam, Anne and Margaret
trustee Frank Tobin were instrumental in
helping interested library users to launch the Friends of the Library once the library was established.
Thanks to their efforts, and those of our founding Friends members, the Friends organization was
established on July 6, 1973. The goals were and remain to raise funds to enhance the services of
the CRRL, to focus public attention on the library, and to support the library in developing library
services and facilities for the region.
This year, the Friends are honoring three long-time founding members who are retiring from their
Friends work this year.
Anne Dickinson
Since the 1970s, Anne has held a
variety of positions in the Friends
of the Library, including Treasurer
and then co-Treasurer of the
Spotsylvania Friends. She was
instrumental in fundraising for
the new Salem Church Library.
1 Friends of the Library 2015
Miriam Parsons
A Fredericksburg Chapter member,
Miriam has served as both President
and Treasurer of the Friends. In
recent years she has been a faithful
sorter at the Headquarters Library,
identifying the cream of the crop to
go into the book sale.
Margaret Smith
Margaret was for many years
the Spotsylvania co-Treasurer,
as well as holding many other
positions in the Friends,
including President. She was
also active in fundraising for
the Salem Church Library.
From the Director
Dear Friends,
As you know, 2015 has been a year of transition for the Central
Rappahannock Regional Library. Our long-time and beloved library
director, Donna Cote, retired after 44 years with the CRRL and 34
years as director. Donna oversaw the growth of the CRRL from the
former Lafayette School in Fredericksburg and a storefront in Colonial
Beach, to the library system we have today with nine brand-new
or renovated buildings that serve over 300,000 people. Under her
leadership, the CRRL has established vital community partnerships
that ensure we are recognized as a resource for lifelong learning,
a destination for artistic enrichment, and a welcoming community
meeting center.
Caroline Parr,
Interim Director
As you will see on page 9, the Friends are honoring Donna and her years of service
to the CRRL with a new membership category. The Cote Society will honor Donna’s
contribution to the library and the community by giving the Friends the opportunity
to make an even more generous donation to the organization that does so much to
support the library. Please consider making a donation at the Cote level this year.
In 2015, your generous contributions made it possible for the library to enhance our
programs and services. Listed below are just a few examples. So much of what we
do depends on our loyal Friends of the Library. On behalf of the library staff and the
entire community, thank you!

Friends continue to support the popular Music on the Steps
program which attracted close to 3,000 friends and neighbors
every week from June to August. This year’s series culminated
in a packed house at James Monroe High School for a
memorable concert by Fredericksburg favorite Doc Scantlin
and His Imperial Palms Orchestra.

The Teen Poetry Contest and the Teen Art Show attract entries from high
school students throughout the region each year. Each contest is judged
by local professionals, adding to the cachet of winning. The receptions and
awards are graciously provided by the Friends.
The “Infinite Universe” is More Limited
Than Previously Thought
They taught me the solar system as a little kid.
The boys in my class wanted to be like Mars:
Strong, fierce, good at fighting.
Mars is a boy planet, my teacher made that clear,
And so are most of the others.
They taught me the solar system as a little kid.
There were only two girl planets.
I guess; I mean, they called one “Mother Earth.”
She is fertile and she takes care of her tenants.
Earth is a good hostess. We wanted to be Earth.
They taught me the solar system as a little kid.
They said, “Venus is named after the goddess of beauty.”
Venus is a girl planet. We wanted to be Venus.
Well, we didn’t have a lot to choose from.
The boys wanted to have powers over the seas
And the stars, and the heavens, and the underworld.
And they wanted to be swift and strong and battle ready.
And the girls wanted to be beautiful and motherly and loving.
They taught us to be the Earth.

The Friends are big supporters of the vegetable beds at the library that benefit
the S.E.R.V.E food pantry. Thanks to an Eagle Scout candidate, the
Falls Run Master Gardeners, and interested staff, 183 pounds
of tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash and bell peppers
were donated to the S.E.R.V.E. food pantry last summer.
The 5th Annual Library Blossoms Plant
Sale in May sold out all 110 hanging
baskets of fresh flowers before
11:00 a.m., and the monthly book sales
continue to be popular.
The Stafford Friends also funded
author and artist receptions this year,
as well as the 5th Anniversary
Celebration of the
England Run opening.

Over 20 dedicated Friends of the Library help with sorting, setting-up and cashiering at Porter’s
monthly book sale. MaryBelle and Dave sort donations all month long. Dave, Steven and Sharon,
set up the sale on Thursday morning so that we are ready for the sale to begin on Friday. The
wonderful cashiers include Cory, Penny, Ruth, Jim, Mary, Phyllis, Rita, Mitzi, Rick, Stephanie,
Janice, Trudy, Anita, Judith, Margaret, Len, and Karen.
The Friends also supported several
programs over the course of the year,
including Meet the Moon, a STEM class
in partnership with the NASA Solar
System Ambassador Program and the
Rappahannock Astronomy Club.

This summer, all the library branches enjoyed performances
for children in conjunction with the ever-popular Summer
Reading Clubs. “Superhero Magic!” with Joe Romano, who
has performed for CRRL audiences before, was a big hit.
This year Joe’s fun and dynamic show combined books,
magic, and superheroes to go along with the Summer
Reading Club theme.
In July, school-age children enjoyed
presentations of “A View from the Top”
by The Wildlife Center of Virginia. The
children saw live birds of prey and learned
how the “superpowers” of these magnificent
predators make them successful hunters.

The Friends also supported the
appearance of Paul Merklein. This
entertaining cartoonist allowed
teens at all three branches to
discover, develop and practice
their own cartooning skills.
The Westmoreland branches also appreciate the new table
covers with the CRRL logo. They are great to take out to school
events and festivals to help identify the library. Thanks to the
purchase of folding tables for each branch, Westmoreland can
participate even more in community events.
All the little extras that the Friends provide make these
Westmoreland branches be the charming libraries that their
customers love so very much.

A gift to the librAry
is A gift to everyone!
Why Give:
Your gift to the Library will help us serve our community
above and beyond what tax-based funding provides.
Your gift will make a difference in the lives of others and
help build a stronger community for all.

The Friends of the Library, P.O. Box 201, Fredericksburg, VA 22404.
