Headteacher’s Message
Feeling Good week
This week we have been asked to
participate in a health survey of young
people.
We had a very successful week of
activities for Feeling good week. The
designs for our ‘Room in Mind’/Young
Carers Room display were so good that
we have now chosen two designs as
winners and two as runners up. These will
be announced at the KS3 and KS4
assemblies in March. All designs will be
displayed in the room itself.
National Health England want to find out
about children and young peoples
experience of GP services in their local
areas. Sir Frederic Osborn School has been
approached to offer a random sample of
children and young people between the
ages of 11 and 18 who will complete a
questionnaire about their experiences of
seeing a GP. The questionnaire will be
completed during form time and all the
information is anonymous. Once completed,
we will have the satisfaction of participating
in this national survey and we can view the
results of it.
At the KS3 and KS4 assemblies students
from Year 11 will present what they
learned from the launch of the’ Health for
Teens’ website event. We will also have
Suki Dowsett, our school nurse to talk
about the new ‘Text a School Nurse’
facility linked to this new site. This texting
facility allows young people to access

Hawthorne Theatre Trip
‘Last week the Year 12 and 13 students were given
the chance to spend the morning at the Hawthorne
Theatre where we learnt about the backstage roles
behind the theatre. We were lead through a talk from
the marketing and technical manager about what
their job consists of and how they help out with the
many jobs involved with organising a production. The
experience was very interesting as we could see
what goes into putting on a professional performance
and how the role of actor is so much more than just
learning lines and performing on stage. We left with
lots of valuable information which was very useful
and gave us a further insight into the industry. A big
thanks to Miss Standage for organising this fantastic
opportunity!’

Frantic Assembly Workshop
Disability Awareness
At school this week, we have taken some time to
reflect on disability awareness. The students have
watched a video during form time and have discussed
the impact that words and actions can have on
others. It would be great if these conversations can
be continued in the home environment.
‘Last week I took part in the Frantic Assembly
workshop, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It developed
my physical Drama skills further by taking part in
physical and energetic warm-ups. My favourite
moment of the workshop was doing the lifts. I myself
was not very confident to begin with but after a few
attempts I was able to do them without an issue. The
workshop helped our Drama group to create ideas
for our upcoming Drama production ‘Pool (No
Water)’ which is a physical piece of Drama.’
By Adam Mansell, 12D.

We are really excited about upcoming performances
by our GCSE and BTEC students. Performance
dates will be communicated in future issues of

IMPORTANT—School Uniform and
Appearance
Please be reminded of the school rules regarding
school uniform and the general appearance of
students whilst at school.
School Uniform
All students in Years 7 to 11 wear school uniform.
This is to encourage a sense of pride in Sir Frederic
Osborn School, discourage competition over dress
and prevent students from wearing unsuitable clothes
to school. We ask that ALL items are clearly labelled
with the student’s name. In deciding on the style of
Uniform the cost, availability and ease of regulation
were very much in our minds.

Attendance & Attainment
We want your child’s life to be a success! We are
sure that as a parent you want exactly the same
things for your child. How can we work together
and make it
happen?







Children should come to school every day. Our
school’s attendance target is 96% but children
should always aim for 100%
We WANT children to learn so that they have
the opportunity to go to college or university,
take up an apprenticeship/training and find a
good job.
If your child is not in school, missing odd days
he/she is falling behind and it’s harder to catch
up with school work.
If your child is genuinely ill please provide the
school with a note so that the absence can be
authorised. Please ensure you ring the school
in the morning to inform us of the absence.
Please try wherever possible to book medical
appointments outside of school hours. If the
appointment has to be during the school day
please send your child to school before and
after the appointment where possible.
If you are having problems getting your child to
school please talk to us.
If your child takes one day off every week, at
the end of the school year it will give a total of
nearly 8 weeks off school!
Alongside attendance is punctuality. It is imperative
that your child is punctual to school. Registration in
the morning is 8.30am therefore your child needs to
be lined up outside their Form Room at 8.30am and
not arriving to school at this time. The back gate will
be locked at 8.30am every morning; if your child uses
this entrance please ensure that they leave for school
in plenty of time so they arrive before the gates are
locked.

Leadership Academy Update
Level 2 Indoor Athletics Competition Year 7
A busy day was had at Sir Frederic Osborn School on
Thursday 23rd February. In the morning we hosted
our annual Young Ambassador Day where Primary
School leaders developed their leadership skills when
they led different sporting activities with the help of
Year 9 Silver Ambassadors. This was a fantastic
event, enjoyed by all!
In the afternoon we hosted the Year 7 Indoor Athletics
Level 2 Inter School Competition. Our Year 7 team
performed excellently with the Boys team finishing
runners up, only 10 points from first placed
Stanborough School. Highlights from the boy’s team
include Joseph Glenville’s 6 lap race and the relay
team, as well as fantastic results in the field events.
The girl’s team were also brilliant, with fantastic
individual results on the field events, including Speed
Bounce. Highlights include the girls relay team
working so well as a team. Well done to all our Year 7
students who were involved, you have done us proud!
The Leadership Academy provided leaders for the
event, all of whom were looking extremely smart
wearing their new Welwyn, Hatfield Partnership
t-shirts. The leaders timed races, managed our Sir
Frederic Osborn team and led different field events
including counting Speed Bounce, scoring Standing
Triple Jump and calculating the height in Vertical
Jump.
Well done to all of the leaders, who have once again
proved a true asset to the school, representing us
superbly. Thank you and a HUGE well done to Mrs M
Salter, School Games Organiser, Mr G Edge and the
Welwyn, Hatfield Apprentices!
Gym and Dance Display 2017
Sir Frederic Osborn School and the Leadership
Academy, along with the PE Department are pleased
to announce that the first Gym and Dance display in 4
years will be hosted in Osborn Hall this month. The
‘all singing, all dancing’ display will contain talent from
across the 5 year groups of our school, with a variety
of dance and gym selections.
I can officially announce the Gym and Dance Display
is on Wednesday 29th March, starting at 6pm. An
interform edition of the display will take place on
Monday 20th March during Period 4 in the Sports
Hall. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to
show case their different talents in the two events. If
students have anything that they would like to enter in
the Gym and Dance Display, they must see Miss G
Ward, Mr G Edge or Regan Carolan. Students who
want to take part in the interform competition need to
sign the sign-up sheet in the Sports Hall!
*BRAND NEW CLUB* Football Challenges
We are extremely excited to offer a brand new club at
Sir Frederic Osborn School. Mr G Edge, from the PE
Department is running a brand new ‘Football Skills’
club. This club will take place on a Week 2 Friday
lunchtime, on the All Weather Pitch, or in the Sports
Hall depending on the weather. The club will feature a
varied range of football challenges. Students are
reminded they must wear trainers or football boots for
the club, in order to perform to their full potential and
must wear appropriate clothing.
We feel this club is a fantastic opportunity for students
who like the sport, but do not like playing it
competitively. The club is available for all abilities,
meaning all students can enjoy it. Why not challenge
some of your friends, or someone from another year?
Maybe you can take on a teacher from the PE
Department!
