D
EARLY BELOVED FRIENDS IN THE LORD:
Did the Lord Jesus Christ die for our sins, or did He die because He blasphemed the Emperor Tiberius? Did He die on the Cross, or later while His
"fellow conspirators" tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Him? Did He rise from the
dead, or was His body surreptitiously buried in an unknown grave?
These are some of the questions posed by Dr. Hugh Schonfield in his best-selling
hook, "The Passover Plot: New Light on the History of Jesus." In the March issue of
THE CHOSEN PEOPLE, we carefully reviewed the book and summarized Dr. Schonfield's thesis thus:
... that Jesus planned His own arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection! He states that
Jesus arranged to be drugged on the cross, that He simulated death so He could later be
removed and be "resurrected," and thus fulfill the Messianic prophecies. According to
Dr. Schonfield, this scheme of Jesus failed in only one detail, a "detail" that was
prophesied by Zechariah (Zechariah 12:10), centuries before Christ lived — a Roman
soldier thrust a spear into Jesus' side. After His entombment an accomplice, Joseph of
Arimathca, removed the still-living but unconscious Jesus from the tomb. Jesus died,
Dr. Schonfield asserts, not as a result of the crucifixion but because of the soldier's
spear thrust!
Dr. Schonfield wrote this book after forty years of research. He wrote as an historian. As an historian his thesis fails on three major points: (1) it presents no evidence;
(2) it is inconsistent — the author rejects on one page what he accepts on the next;
and (3) it contains inaccuracies.
In this issue we will try by God's grace to use valid historical methods to demonstrate the absurdity of the "Passover Plot." As an historian of the liberal school,
Dr. Schonfield consistently rejects anything miraculous as incredible. To members of
this school of thought no amount of evidence can prove a miracle. The learned
doctor is clever, but if he rejects the miraculous in order to disprove the basic facts
of our faith, that same method will also disprove the cardinal truths of Judaism. Let
us he candid; if there is no such thing as the miraculous. both Judaism and Christianity are based on myths and not on facts. and, therefore, have no validity. This
historical method is pure subjectivity: the historian can accept or reject just whatever
he desires, and, as has been pointed out, this is a major failing of his thesis.
Can the Testimony of the Gospels Be Impeached?
Second Class postage paid at New York, N. Y.

In our opinion it is fair to accept as historical evidence the testimony of eyewitnesses and well-informed contemporaries. Of course, such testimony may be im-
peached just as testimony may be impeached today in a court of law. Is the witness
telling the truth or is he a fraud? Is he mistaken, or was he deceived? It is impossible
to impeach successfully the authors of the Gospels on either of these grounds. The
only valid historical evidence that exists as to the foundation of our faith is the evidence of the New Testament Scriptures in which we have the testimony of both
eyewitnesses and well-informed contemporaries. The eyewitnesses are Matthew and
John; the well-informed contemporaries are Mark and Luke. Luke was the author
of the two historical books of the New Testament, the "Gospel According to Luke"
and "The Acts of the Apostles." These two books are the work of an educated physician, Luke, who was a companion of Paul on many of his journeys, and who had
special opportunities to inform himself about the facts concerning the Lord. John
Mark was also a companion of Paul and as such he, too, had occasion to do "original
research" with the eyewitnesses, the immediate group of our Lord's inner circle.
In company with Paul, Luke had visited Jerusalem and lived for two years at
Caesarea where he had fellowship with the early disciples. All one has to do is to
read the preface of Luke's Gospel to realize that he had both the will and capacity to
make the utmost use of his abundant opportunities to obtain exact information:
Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things
which are most surely believed among us, even as they delivered them unto us, which from
the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; it seemed good to me also,
having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in
order, most excellent Theophilus, that thou mightest know the certainty of those things
wherein thou hast been instructed (Luke 1:1-4).
This is the historical method at its best. As a trained observer Luke had the
greatest opportunity to examine and sift the evidence. That he did so is abundantly
clear.
The Inconsistencies of the Schonfield Argument
Let us be confident of the fact that the testimony of the Gospel writers is competent historical evidence. Their testimony that the Lord Jesus Christ actually died on
the Cross when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea is explicitly clear. Schonfield
rejects their testimony but he does at least accept the fact that Jesus was tried by
Pilate, that Roman soldiers nailed Him to the Cross, that a Roman soldier pierced
His side with a spear, and that blood and water flowed from that wound. In fact,
Schonfield uses this to aver that Jesus was not dead at that time! This ipse dixit of the
author is characteristic. One wonders if he wants to be an historian who doesn't want
to be bothered by facts. As an historian Dr. Schonfield ignores certain self-evident
historical truths. If Jesus was the conspirator as charged, then He had the power to
manipulate not only the leaders of the Jews but also Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. After all, Pontius Pilate dispatched a centurion to find out if Jesus was dead.
If Schonfield is right, then those Roman soldiers were the biggest idiots of history.
Of course they knew when a man was dead, their battle-training made this a matter
of self-preservation. The centurion testified that Jesus died (was the centurion also
part of the "plot"?) and the Roman soldiers seeing he was dead, "broke not his legs"
(they, too, must have been in on the "plot" — can any one imagine Roman soldiers
risking their lives in this manner?). There is absolutely no doubt about one glorious
fact, the Lord Jesus Christ actually died on the Cross for us!
Various Explanations for the Empty Tomb
There can be no valid reason for doubting that our Lord was taken from the Cross
and buried immediately in the sepulchre of Joseph of Arimathea. A great stone sealed
the tomb. Observe the description of the stone: "... he rolled a great stone to the
door of the sepulchre ..." (Matthew 27:60).
2
THE CHOSEN PEOPLE
• This stone was sealed by the chief priests and Pharisees and a Roman guard
was placed around the tomb for the specific purpose of preventing the removal of our
Lord's body. In spite of all these carefully-planned precautions, on the first day of the
week after the burial the tomb was empty! Even Schonfield admits this fact — his
book is a contortive effort at trying to explain away the empty tomb. What happened
to the body of our Lord? The more we ask the question the more we realize that the
tomb was empty, and that either the disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ stole the body,
or the Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead. Other alternative explanations for the
empty tomb have been offered and found wanting, but neither the "swoon theory" of
which Schonfield's explanation is a variation, nor the "vision hypothesis," nor any
other machination of man's mind can explain all the facts of the case. The enemies
of the Lord Jesus Christ realized this truth and concocted their own "Passover Plot:"
Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed
unto the chief priests all the things that were done. And when they were assembled with
the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, saying, "Say
ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. And if this come to
the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. So they took the money, and
did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this
day (Matthew 28:11-15).
Some Concessions by Dr. Schonfield
"Say ye, His disciples came by night." Who were these disciples? Schonfield was
neither an eyewitness nor a well-informed contemporary, but he is sure he knows, He
says they were Joseph of Arimathea and "the gardener" of John's Gospel. Incidentally, it must be admitted here that though the learned doctor rejects the above passage
from Matthew as unhistorical, he does agree with its logic, that if the body of the
Lord were taken from the tomb it must have been the disciples who perpetrated this
act. According to Schonfield, before the Cross Jesus arranged with the Roman soldier
(sic!) to be drugged so as to feign death. He also arranged for Joseph and the gardener
to remove His body from the tomb, while He was still unconscious so that He could
also feign His resurrection!
"His disciples came by night" — this is another detail concurred in by Schonfield.
Although he admits that Joseph and the gardener came by night, he adds that they
rolled away the "great stone" and removed our Lord, which latter statement is absurd.
It was night but there was no darkness, because it was Passover, when the moon was
full so that days and nights were of equal length; when the sun set, the moon rose.
At Passover Jerusalem was filled to overflowing. Hundreds of thousands of people
had to sleep out of doors and outside the city walls. The tomb was also outside the
walls. How silently Joseph and the gardener must have worked so as not to alert anyone, if Dr. Schonfield is right!
"And stole him away while we slept." Roman soldiers did not sleep on guard. to
do so would mean death; but here we have not only one soldier but the entire guard
sleeping, and (now we must believe in miracles!) they all slept at the same time!
Two Men Move a Huge Stone, According to Dr. Schonfield
How did Joseph and the gardener remove "the great stone?" Stones are heavy;
they may not be moved easily. At the garden tomb in Jerusalem there is today a
fragment of such a stone. At this point it is not necessary to enter into the controversy
of whether or not the garden tomb is actually the place of our Lord's burial and resurrection. Certainly the tomb now pointed out to be our Lord's could be such a tomb
and such a stone. The present stone is only one-quarter in size of the original stone.
it stands four and a half feet high, and it would take more than two strong men
equipped with crowbars to move just this one fragment. But Dr. Schonfield expects
MAY, 1967
3
us to believe that Joseph and the gardener plied their crowbars and moved a stone
four times the size of the present fragment. Can anybody be so gullible as to believe
that Joseph and the gardener moved the great stone by themselves and did it so
silently that not even one member of the entire Roman guard was awakened, all of
whom had fallen asleep at the same time while on duty? Of course, according to
Schonfield, there was a Roman soldier who had an unknown drug of such marvellous
potency that when it was taken by Jesus on the Cross, He immediately was so overcome that even trained Roman soldiers (one of whom had achieved the rank of
centurion) thought He was dead! Perhaps the learned historian contends that the entire guard had imbibed the drug. But how could it have been that not one of the
thousands of those who must have been sleeping in the neighborhood did not waken?
Perhaps it was a very common drug and in great supply! The simple fact is that the
bodily resurrection of our Lord was a miracle. I realize that it is difficult for a learned
man to believe that there are such things as miracles. But it is easier to believe a
miracle than it is to believe an absurdity. "The Passover Plot" is an absurdity.
Moral Blindness vs. Spiritual Enlightenment
Our criticism of Dr. Schonfield's book is not a matter of interpreting history.
The basic difference between Dr. Hugh Schonfield and the believer in the Scripture
is one of mental attitude, or more accurately; spiritual enlightenment (John 3:6).
One person states that a miracle is an impossibility; another knows that there is a God
who "worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth" (Daniel 6:27). One who
knows the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior realizes the fact that He still works
wonders. The resurrection of our Lord is not a problem to one who has put his trust
in Him. The miracle of salvation which the child of God experiences proves to him
the fact of the resurrection. Only a Christ who died "for our sins according to the
Scriptures," can save. Only One who "rose again from the dead," can justify. The
resurrection of our Lord from the dead is not proved or disproved by the casuistries
of men. The greatest proof of the resurrection of our Lord is not found in the writings
of renowned theologians. If one wants to know the truth of the resurrection, he can
experience it in his own life. The greatest evidence of the resurrection of the Lord
walk around on two feet. Only a living Christ can save from sin; only a living Savior
can give direction and purpose to life. The chorus of the hymn is true: "You ask me
how I know He lives? He lives within my heart." This is the truth which the author
of "The Passover Plot" needs to know. This is the message which by God's grace we
bring to our "brethren according to the flesh who are Israelites."
Faithfully yours for Israel's salvation,

THE CHOSEN PEOPLE
Report from our Denver Branch
REV. R. TERRY DELANEY, Missionary in Charge
F
rom my plane window I could see the lights of Denver, Colorado, glittering against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.
Those lights reminded me of the 30,000 Jewish people who live
in the Mountain States District (Colorado, New Mexico, Utah,
and Wyoming). I was once again challenged with the task which
is ours — to reach these people with the message that the Deliverer has come, that He has brought the victory, and that He is
soon returning.
True, the methods we use to accomplish this unordinary task are sometimes very
unspectacular and common, but in the long-run they bear effective and long-lasting
results. For example, every Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. we are conducting a Bible
discussion group which is designed to be of particular interest to Jewish people. Sometimes in our meetings we only have two, three, or four unsaved Jewish people.
Nevertheless, the attendance of these few is regular and for that we are grateful.
Mrs. Hanna Wago, our capable veteran missionary, together with Mrs. Jewell
Baer (Honorary Missionary) are reaching Jewish ladies with the Gospel of Christ.
A number of Jewish people have come to know Christ through Mrs. Wago's outstanding ministry. Rev. Martin Rosen, Missionary-in-Charge of our Los Angeles
work is but one example of one led to the Messiah through Mrs. Wago's faithful
ministry.
Each week I contact a number of unsaved Jews with whom I share the message
of redemption. Many of these visits provide leads to other Jewish people who do not
know the Saviour of Israel. We praise the Lord for three Jewish people who are learning about Christ through our visitation ministry.
Students from Western Bible Institute — located a few miles from Denver — assist in the visitation program. Presently four students are calling on Jewish people who
receive our monthly Shepherd of Israel. We are thankful for the faithfulness of these
students in assisting our program in Denver.
Within a short time we hope to establish a monthly home fellowship meeting in
Albuquerque, New Mexico. This will enable Christians in Albuquerque to invite their
Jewish friends to a meeting which is designed to be of interest to them. There are
2,500 Jewish people living in Albuquerque. Each month I visit several Jewish people
when I travel to this beautiful city in New Mexico.
A second meeting to be established in the near future is the monthly family night.
These meetings will be held in Denver. This meeting will be primarily a social function which will be concluded on a spiritual note.
Not to be overlooked in the ministry carried on in the Mountain States
District is the deputation program. Each week I have the opportunity to speak
in various churches throughout the district. Many of our best contacts with
Jewish people come through these meetings. Christians become concerned for
the spiritual welfare of their Jewish friends and neighbors and request that we contact them.
Yes, something is being done to reach the Jewish community for Christ in
the Mountain States District, but we desire that the ministry may be greatly enlarged
in the coming months and years.

He Said, "I am a Jew and
nobody can convert me!"
By REV. VICTOR SEDACA
Missionary in Charge, Buenos Aires
EVERY Tuesday eve-
ning we are having some good Bible
studies and discussions in our home.
The most recent
meeting was a glorious one!
One member of
our group is a wellknown Jewish doctor who attends our
meetings almost every week. On the very
first night he came we spent about three
hours searching the Scriptures for those
prophecies concerning the Messiah
Jesus. Suddenly the doctor exclaimed
with amazement, "I am beginning to see!"
Since that first meeting this man has
not only never missed a meeting but he is
also bringing along with him some of his
Jewish friends, thereby showing his
spiritual growth in the Lord. Deep in my
heart I feel that the Holy Spirit is accomplishing His work in the soul of this fine
man. Praise the Lord!
Another Jewish visitor, said to be an
important personage in our community,
was brought to our meeting by a devoted
Christian lady. This gentleman is the sort
of Jew who appears to enjoy himself by
warning us, "I am a Jew, and shall forever be a Jew, and nobody will dare to
try and convert me to another religion."
A week ago, however, the Holy Spirit
began to work in his heart. At this meeting, after several hours of studying the
prophecies pointing to the Messiah as
Jesus.Christ, his attitude began to change.
There was a moment just as I opened
6
the Bible at the 53rd chapter of Isaiah,
as we sat "head to head," so to speak,
and "eating," you might say, every word
of the prophet, as I underlined the precious words with my finger, when his
REPORTS SENT IN BY OUR WORKERS
was
After the class I met the young man
and we talked for some time on Deuteronomy 6:4, "Hear, 0 Israel: The Lord
our God is one Lord," and the Jewish
contention that Christians believe in
three Gods, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The young man told me he had been
brought up in an orthodox Jewish home
and could read Hebrew. He was much
interested in the Hebrew-English New
Testament I was using during class. So
I gave it to him on his promise to read it
and ask God to reveal the truth to him
as he read.
On the following day the pastor of the
church counselled with the young man
and asked him if he would like to talk
with me again. He concurred and met me
on the following day and told me of his
many problems, and his desire and concern for the truth in God's Word. He admitted his need for "something to help
him settle down." I told him what Christ
had done for me in my life.
He left for England that afternoon.
Later I received a greeting card from him
in England, upon which he had written
the following note:
"Thanking you and Mr. Byrnes
(the pastor) for showing me the way
to our wonderful Saviour and Lord."
holding a 4-day
Bible. Conference in
one of our local
churches. The pastor
asked me to accompany him to a Bible
class he conducts
every Sunday afternoon. He said a
young Jewish man had been attending
the class and he thought he would be
present on this particular Sunday.
Was this Jewish young man saved? I
believe he was.
A similar experience had to do with a
Jewish man from Israel. In this case the
experience began with a long distance
telephone call from a pastor and members of his board asking me to visit this
man who, they said, was in a difficulty.
Also, they said, he needed Christ. I
visited the man and tried to assist him,
and answered many of his questions and
arguments concerning Christ. Some time
face suddenly changed its expression and
he almost shouted abruptly, "Yes, he is
Jesus! Who else could be?"
So — the gentleman was right when
he said, "I am a Jew and nobody can
convert me!" Nobody can, as he said,
but the Holy Spirit could.
A good symptom of the progress of our
Tuesday evening meetings is the fact that
we have had to add some extra chairs to
our living-room to accommodate more
Jewish people who are interested in the
Lord. These first fruits for the Lord are
only the beginning of what we feel is to
be a marvelous operation of the Holy
Spirit in our Buenos Aires Branch. We
covet the prayers of our "Chosen People"
friends for the Jewish souls who are
being reached with the Gospel of the
Lord Jesus Christ.

case I have no knowledge as to whether
or not he accepted the Lord.

May I thank all who have prayed that
Jewish souls, like the two men mentioned

Prayer Requests
By ALTHEA S. MILLER
Missionary, Washington, D. C.
PRAISE GOD with us for an increased in-
terest in the message of the Messiah on
the part of a well-educated Jewish man.
As a result of terrible persecution and
death to his family in Europe, this gentleman has been denying his Jewishness in a
futile attempt to hide it. God has been
pleased to use the ministry of our monthly Family Night at the Center which Mr.
Z. has been attending with his family, to
arouse a concern for his personal spiritual condition. Join us in prayer for his
salvation.
We also request your :prayer partnership for a young and talented Jewish
woman who is just the opposite of Mr. Z.
Miss F. identifies in every way possible
with Jewishness, and yet this does not
satisfy or give peace. Almost in spite of
herself she returns weekly to the Center
to question, to learn, and to listen. Along
with many other Jewish, persons, Miss F.
must come to realize that she will not be
giving up her Jewishness by believing in
Messiah-Christ as her Saviour; rather,
she'll become a complete Jew. Please pray
for wisdom as we love and lead her to
know God through Jesus Christ.

View of New York, site of the Battery, 1656.
HE MANHATTAN BRANCH of the American Board of Missions to the Jews is
located in the heart of New York City with its teeming millions. The Mission
is located half-way between the Hudson River and Central Park and only a
half block from Broadway, the world's most famous thoroughfare.
Manhattan, which was purchased from the Indians by the Dutch over three hundred years ago, has become like ancient Corinth or Rome — a crossroad of the world.
Upon its first occupation by the white man, the island was rough and rocky with
brooks, ponds, and large swamps. Today this same area is characterized by hundreds of miles of streets which gave rise to the term "concrete jungle." Manhattan
is a major center for music, art, scientific collections, finance, clothing, education,
and shipping. The borough's population numbers about three million. The first
Jew to settle on Manhattan Island was Jacob Barsimson from the Netherlands
(August, 1654). A month later a group of twenty three arrived following a terrifying
capture by Spanish pirates. They were rescued and then brought to the "New Netherland." Peter Stuyvesant, governor, was not too pleased with the accession to the
colony of these Jews. However, the Dutch West India Co. persuaded him to allow
the Jews to remain with the proviso that, "the poor among them should not become
a burden to the company or to the community, but be supported by their own nation."
From this small beginning more than 800,000 now live on the Island. This means
that within subway distance from the doors of our Mission live more Jews than the
combined population of all the large cities of Israel.
Needless to say, our headquarters work presents as great a missionary challenge
to be found anywhere. And, almost every hour of the day hundreds pass by our
large display window; some to pause and read the Bible or attractive displays done
by a Christian artist. The "message of the window" is geared to the mind and
thinking of our Jewish people and confronts them always with the claims of Jesus
Christ, their Messiah.
Upon entering the building, visitors are met by a receptionist who answers
personal requests or refers them to a missionary who is ready to lend a helping hand
and to bring spiritual guidance. A large table and supply cabinet is close by to offer
literature. The ministry of the printed page is perhaps our greatest means of reaching the Jewish people. Many pieces of literature in the form of tracts and Bibles are
handed personally to seeking hearts each month.
The main sanctuary or meeting hall for services is on the first floor. At the front of
the sanctuary is a large mural oil painting of the city of Jerusalem. The splendour
of the scene and the Bible words: "Blessed is He who cometh in the name of the
Lord," thrill the soul.
Our Manhattan Branch, with the Rev. David J. Juroe as missionary-in-charge,
offers a warm welcome to all who may enter its doors. Free counseling service to
aid with the problems of both the seeker and the believer, financial aid to the needy,
spiritual instruction from the Word of God, and fellowship which is sincere and real
make our ministry a far-reaching one. Many Jews over the years have become
"trophies of grace" in Christ because of such personal and consistent ministry.
The regular meetings of the home mission station of Beth Sar Shalom are as
follows:
(1) 3:45 p.m. service every Sunday of the year. This service provides much
group participation with a hymn sing and then followed by a plain but dignified
worship service. A formal bulletin for each service has recently been adopted as well
as an ushering service to add assistance and order. The Lord is to be praised for
the growing interest in this service. Occasionally, this service is a public baptism,
which is a highlight as Jews and Gentiles join in praise and encouragement of those
who have made recent professions of faith. The second Sunday of each month is set
11
apart as the Communion service. What a blessing to break bread together as many
from different racial backgrounds share in this manner the redemption of the
Messiah.
(2) 7 p.m. Wednesday Bible Study Hour. This meeting's purpose is to study in
depth the Word of God to nourish and help the Jewish believers grow in the faith.
This meeting is followed by refreshments in the social hall.
(3) 2 p.m. each Thursday — Ladies Bible Class. This class is under the capable
instruction of Miss Lola Weir. She reports that the class has shown steady growth.
And there have been several who have come off the street to attend. Much stress
is given to bringing Jewish friends and soul winning. The teacher reports that she
has led the study for over a year in the Book of Isaiah.
(4) The first Saturday of each month at 2 - 6 p.m. is the Ladies Auxiliary and
Men's Fellowship meeting. Mrs. Rachel Cohen is in charge. She reports steady
growth. This group was formed in the fall of 1960 by Mrs. Sarah Braunstein. This
group flourished beautifully with the blessings of the Lord. As time went on Mrs.
Sarah Braunstein felt that this group was incomplete without the men, for the group
started as a ladies group. So a men's fellowship was formed. The women meet in the
Chapel and the men on the third floor in the headquarters building. Our missionary,
Miss Lola Weir, teaches God's Word to the women, and the Resident Pastor, Mr.
Juroe, teaches the men.
After Bible study we gather for refreshments and fellowship — a wonderful time
of rejoicing in the Lord. Both classes are enthusiastic about what they receive by way
of blessing and insight.
There is much to praise the Lord for because of Mrs. Braunstein's faithful service
and vision. Many have been brought to the Lord through this ministry which began
by making "Passover celebrations." Because of illness, Mrs. Braunstein had to give
up her leadership and Rev. Jonas Cohen and his wife, Rachel, undertook this ministry.
The work continued to grow and to this day we are able to discern God's presence
in the midst of our people who come and who have acknowledged their Messiah,
Jesus Christ. This is the main purpose of the Fellowship meetings.
There are other various functions throughout the year for our Jewish people to
promote fellowship and provide an evangelistic opportunity. An annual Passover
Service has been a tremendous ministry. Last year all the branches in the greater
New York area cooperated and several were saved.
An annual boat ride in June up the beautiful Hudson River to Bear Mountain
has become a blessed experience. A whole day is devoted to this outing, and our
people truly enjoy the fresh air away from the city.
Recently an annual weekend retreat has been included in our expanding work.
The purpose in this ministry is to concentrate on the believer's daily walk and has
been a means of encouraging Jewish people in spiritual matters.
Street meeting work in New York presents a great challenge. An expanded
ministry in this area is anticipated. We hope to have nursery care for young children
soon to make it possible for young mothers to receive instruction and help.
"Are Jews being won?" is a question we are frequently asked. Only recently an
elderly woman over sixty stood up in one of our Wednesday Bible hours and gave her
first testimony. It was a great thrill to hear her speak of the grace of God in her life
and hear her say what Jesus had come to mean to her. In materialistic Manhattan,
sin abounds. We thank God for the Scripture: "Where sin abounds, so much more
grace abounds." And we see repeatedly His hand and love evidenced in the lives of
many. It is our prayer, dear reader, that you will rejoice in His blessing upon this
work and pray that our outreach shall prosper in the future as we seek to reach
others of the "lost sheep of the house of Israel."

What price dialogue? English Jewry
is currently engaged in a warm debate
on the subject of Jewish-Christian dialogue. The London weekly Jewish Chronicle recently ran the headline: DO WE
WANT A DIALOGUE? "The Christian
Churches are drawing closer together.
Particularly since the Vatican Council,
men of good will in all Christian denominations are anxious to engage Jews in
the inter-faith dialogue developing between them. Should Jews accept the invitation?" NO, says Mr. E. R. Samuel of
the Council of the Jewish Historical Society; YES, says Mr. A. I. Polack, education officer of the Council of Christians and Jews.
Mr. Samuel reminded his fellow Jews
that in spite of bitter memories stemming from periodic persecutions at the
hands of Christians there have been kindness and tolerance in various lands and
in different settings through the years.
Jews have not always been the whipped
underdog. That today's climate has
changed in this direction is clearly seen
in the current world-wide ecumenical
movement.
It is right for individuals and religions
to make up old quarrels and extend the
hand of friendship to one another. When
it comes to dialogue, however, Mr. Samuel declared there are difficulties. Notably
among these are language (Christians of
all denominations largely speak the same
theological language) with which Jews
are unfamiliar; conceptual, wherein

Christianity is a religion of "right belief"
while Judaism, given the belief in one
God, centers on the "right practice" of
the Torah. Although important, theology
is a secondary subject to Jews. The
final and greatest difficulty as Mr. Samuel sees it is purpose. He believes that
the long term aim of Christianity is to
convert the world to their faith. In contrast, Jews "just want to be left alone
to develop their own religion in their own
way."
Concluding his arguments in the negative, Mr. Samuel said that even though
relations are friendlier and the climate
better, dialogue with Christians is "still
the one-sided, time-honored confrontation between the Church Militant and the
Synagogue Non-Combatant."
On the other side of the ledger Mr.
Polack believes that "nothing but mutual
enrichment could come from the listening and trying to understand the special beliefs and illuminations" of the
Jewish and Christian communities. He
suggests that special subjects which require illumination on both sides today
"would seem to be: the nature of authority, the meaning of Natural Law, the
parallel between the Torah and Logos
concepts, the place of myths in the understanding of metaphysical truth, Messianic doctrine, the problem of pain and
suffering (e.g. the Nazi holocaust) in relation to the Divine scheme, the prag(Continued on Page 18)

Question: Could you please clarify
Joshua's experience in Zechariah 3:1-6
for me? At whose right hand is Satan
standing?
Lord Jesus Christ. What tremendous lessons are to be learned in this Scripture!
Answer: This scene took place after
the Babylonian captivity when the rebuilding of the Temple had begun.
Joshua the high priest was standing before the angel of the LORD as representative of Israel and her priesthood. He
was dressed in garments depicting his sin
and the sin of the people. Satan stood
at his right hand accusing him before
the angel of the LORD. Israel had been
banished because of her sin. Was she now
to be reinstated and her sacrifices permitted? Satan was attempting to prevent it.
This called for the activity of two of the
Persons of the Trinity as we see in verse
2, each called Jehovah. Jehovah (the
angel of Jehovah, the Messiah) as Israel's intercessor said to Satan, "Jehovah
rebuke thee, 0 Satan." He then pointed
out to Satan that Jehovah had chosen Israel and had not changed His purpose
regarding her. This was evidenced by the
fact He had just snatched her out of captivity before she could have been utterly
consumed as a brand snatched from the
burning. He then commanded the filthy
garments to be removed from Joshua
as an indication that iniquity had been
forgiven and caused him to be clothed
in rich apparel and a clean mitre to show
the re-establishment of the priesthood.
Satan was once again defeated by the
Question: Does not Ephesians 1:10 indicate a universal salvation?
14
Answer: This thought comes out of
the English translation "gather together"
but the Greek has anakephalaiosasthai,
"to head up," "to sum up." All things
will be summed up in Christ, the upset
due to original sin corrected, harmony
and unity reestablished, all opposition
put down. It is the righting of the universe that is in view here as in Colossians 1:20, "all things" (ta panta). "Sin
somehow has put the universe out of
joint. Christ will set it right." A. T.
Robertson. Creation will be delivered
from the bondage of corruption and its
groaning and travail will be over, Romans 8:19-23. Passages like Isaiah 11:6-9
will then have their fulfillment.

Question: Is Jeremiah 23:6 ever applied to the Messiah in Jewish writings
and, if so. how is it explained?
Answer: Yes, it is so applied in the
Midrash Rabbah on Lamentations 1:16
paragraph 51. The explanation given
shows how easy it is for unbelief to reason around a truth. The section reads:
"What is the name of King Messiah? R.
Abba b. Kahana said: His name is 'the
THE CHOSEN PEOPLE
Lord'; as it is stated, And this is the
name whereby he shall be called, The
Lord is our righteousness (Jer. XXIII,6).
For R. Levi said: It is good for a province when its name is identical with that
of its king, and the name of its king
identical with that of its God. 'It is good
for a province when its name is identical
with that of its king,' as it is written,
And the name of the city from that day
shall be the Lord is there (Ezek.
XLVIII, 35). 'And the name of its king
identical with that of its God,' as it is
stated, And this is the name whereby he
shall be called, The Lord is our righteousness.'" Now it is quite obvious that the
analogy does not exist in these two Scriptures so the Talmud adds, "Do not read
shamah 'there' but shemah 'its name', i.e.
'the Lord shall be its name." But this is
jumping out of the frying pan into the
fire since it adds to misinterpreting the
Word of God the actual changing of it.
What an accounting one day must be
given!

Question: I was told that the sentence
in Job 13:15, "Though he slay me, yet
will I trust in him," is not in the New
Version of the Bible (1952) because it is
incorrect; that it is not in the original
manuscripts.
Answer: It is not correct to say that
this verse is not in the original manuscripts since it is. However, it is one of
the few passages in Job where there are
two readings, and it is in relation to one
little word only, actually, to one letter
only in a two-letter word in the second
phrase. The first letter of the word is an
undisputed "I," and in the present Hebrew text the second letter is an aleph
while the marginal reading is a vav so
the text has lo "not" while the margin
has lo "him" (the two Hebrew words
have to be spelled the same in English).
The translators of the 1611 version (King
James) followed the margin (most likely
because the Latin Vulgate did so) while
the American Standard and Revised
Standard Versions followed the text and
MAY, 1967
therefore translate "I have no hope."
However, the American Standard Version gives the alternate reading in the
margin and translates "Though he slay
me, yet will I wait for him." This reading is my preference for the following
reasons. Not only is it followed by Jerome and the Vulgate but by the Syriac,
Arabic and Chaldee as well. This is also
the reading of 29 of Kennicott's and
DeRossi's Manuscripts and the Complutensian and Antwerp Polyglots. Perhaps
even more important, since the matter
does not enter the realm of Christian
controversy where a bias can be expected, is the handling of the text by Hebrew
scholars. The Masorah is the body of
traditions relating to the correct spelling,
writing and reading of the Hebrew
Scriptures. The Masorites (the scholars
concerned with this) noted some 13 to
14 thousand cases in which a form was
written one way and read another, known
as KERI U-KHETIV. They list 15
places where lo (lamedh aleph, "not") is
written for lo (lamedh vav, "to him").
These are Exodus 21:8; Leviticus 11:21;
25:30; 1 Samuel 2:3; 2 Samuel 16:18;
2 Kings 8:10; Psalm 100:3; 139:16; Job
13:15; 41:4; Ezra 4:2; Proverbs 19:7;
26:2; Isaiah 9:2; 63:9. Accepting this,
Isaac Leeser translates "yet will I trust
him" as also do the translations of the
Hebrew Publishing Company the Jewish
Publication Society. We are pleased that
the Berkeley Version retains this reading
and translates "Although He slays me,
yet I keep hoping," but we cannot understand why The Oxford Annotated Bible
(Revised Standard Version) states, "the
time-honored rendering, 'yet will I trust
him,' is based on a pious note in the margin of the manuscripts." Surely they
should have a better knowledge of Hebrew textual criticism than this. One additional matter should be noted. There
are those who point out, as does Canon
Cook, that there are reasons for regarding lo (lamedh aleph) as an archaic
form for lo (lamedh vav) which sometimes took its place. This would likewise
retain the reading of "the time-honored
rendering."

CHAPTER XL
3. The Outer and Inner Courts. 17-37
Then brought he me into the outer court;
and, lo, there were chambers and a pavement,
made for the court round about: thirty
chambers were upon the pavement. And the
pavement was by the side of the gates, answerable unto the length of the gates, even
the lower pavement. Then he measured the
breadth from the forefront of the lower gate
unto the forefront of the inner court without,
a hundred cubits, both on the east and on
the north. And the gate of the outer court
whose prospect is toward the north, he measured the length thereof and the breadth
thereof. And the lodges thereof were three
on this side and three on that side; and the
posts thereof and the arches thereof were
after the measure of the first gate: the length
thereof was fifty cubits, and the breadth five
and twenty cubits. And the windows thereof,
and the arches thereof, and the palm-trees
thereof, were after the measure of the gate
whose prospect is toward the east; and they
went up unto it by seven steps; and the arches
thereof were before them. And there was a
gate to the inner court over against the other
gate, both on the north and on the east; and
he measured from gate to gate a hundred
cubits. And he led me toward the south; and,
behold, a gate toward the south: and he
measured the posts thereof and the arches
thereof according to these measures. And
there were windows in it and in the arches
thereof round about, like those windows;
the length was fifty cubits, and the breadth
five and twenty cubits. And there were seven
steps to go up to it, and the arches thereof
were before them; and it had palm-trees, one
on this side, and another on that side, upon
the posts thereof. And there was a gate to the
inner court toward the south: and he measured from gate to gate toward the south a
hundred cubits. Then he brought me to the
inner court by the south gate: and he measured the south gate according to these measures; and the lodges thereof, and the posts
16
thereof, and the arches thereof, according to
these measures: and there were windows in it
and in the arches thereof round about; it was
fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits
broad. And there were arches round about,
five and twenty cubits long, and five cubits
broad. And the arches thereof were toward
the outer court; and palm-trees were upon
the posts thereof: and the ascent to it had
eight steps. And he brought me into the inner
court toward the east: and he measured the
gate according to these measures: and the
lodges thereof, and the posts thereof, and the
arches thereof, according to these measures:
and there were windows therein and in the
arches thereof round about; it was fifty cubits
long, and five and twenty cubits broad. And
the arches thereof were toward the outer
court; and palm-trees were upon the posts
thereof, on this side, and on that side: and the
ascent to it had eight steps. And he brought
me to the north gate: and he measured it according to these measures; the lodges thereof,
the posts thereof, and the arches thereof: and
there were windows therein round about; the
length was fifty cubits, and the breadth five
and twenty cubits. And the posts thereof
were toward the outer court; and palm-trees
were upon the posts thereof, on this side, and
on that side: and the ascent to it had eight
steps.
There is little here that needs elaborate
explanation. The pavement of verse 17 is
to be understood probably as a mosaic
pavement. See 2 Chronicles 7:3 and
Esther 1:6. The numbers 5, 20, and 50
are frequently used. The sanctuary formed a square of some 500 cubits.
4. The Chambers for the Priests. 38-47
And a chamber with the door thereof was
by the posts at the gates; there they washed
the burnt-offering. And in the porch of the
gate were two tables on this side, and two
THE CHOSEN PEOPLE
tables on that side, to slay thereon the burntoffering and the sin-offering and the trespassoffering. And on the one side without, as one
goeth up to the entry of the gate toward the
north, were two tables; and on the other side,
which belonged to the porch of the gate, were
two tables. Four tables were on this side, and
four tables on that side, by the side of the
gate; eight tables, whereupon they slew the
sacrifices. And there were four tables for the
burnt-offering, of hewn stone, a cubit and a
half long, and a cubit and a half broad, and
one cubit high; whereupon they laid the instruments wherewith they slew the burnt offering and the sacrifice. And the hooks, a
handbreadth long, were fastened within round
about: and upon the tables was the flesh of
the oblation. And without the inner gate were
chambers for the singers in the inner court,
which was at the side of the north gate; and
their prospect was toward the south; one at
the side of the east gate having the prospect
toward the north. And he said unto me, This
chamber, whose prospect is toward the south,
is for the priests, the keepers of the charge of
the house; and the chamber whose prospect
is toward the north is for the priests, the keepers of the charge of the altar: these are the
sons of Zadok, who from among the sons of
Levi come near to Jehovah to minister unto
him. And he measured the court, a hundred
cubits long, and a hundred cubits broad, foursquare; and the altar was before the house.
The matter of sacrifices in the kingdom
has for long been a crucial point of controversy. Certainly, there will be offerings
in the tribulation time (Dan. 9:27), a
period that postdates the Church age. The
reiterated argument against millennial
sacrifices is that it contradicts the truth of
the Epistle to the Hebrews. But does it?
The Epistle to the Hebrews is not speaking primarily nor specifically of the millennial era. Furthermore, sacrifices will
have no more redemptive efficacy in the
millennial period than they had in the
ages before Calvary. Let it be emphasized
again that nothing and no sacrifice, before or after the work of the Lord Jesus
Christ on the Cross, invalidates or renders unnecessary that glorious work,
which we shall praise throughout the
eternal ages. But just as the Lord's Supper now detracts not one iota from the
glory of the work of Calvary, but is rather
a constant memorial of it, and that for
over 1900 years, so the sacrifices of the
millennial age will be powerless to diminish the worth of the Savior's death on
Calvary, but will rather be a continuous
MAY, 1967
memorial of it for a thousand years, half
the time allotted to us already for the
memorial of the central fact of history.
Recall, dear reader, that since Israel did
not receive their Messiah in His first
coming, they have never celebrated a
memorial of His redeeming work. Need
we begrudge them this in the light of the
fact that the Scriptures are so clear that
God has appointed the sacrifices for that
age, and surely for their commemorative
value?
Provision will be made for leading the
praises of Israel, just as in the temple of
Solomon. The inner court was the court
of Israel where they could bring their
sacrifices and offerings. It went around
three sides of the sacred area, a breadth
of about 200 feet. But this court, exactly
100 cubits square, with the altar in it, was
in front of the temple. It was the priests'
court and is referred to in connection
with those who were in charge of the
house, the altar, and the service of music.
In verse 45 the guide explains the purpose
of the building.
The mention of the sons of Zadok is
an incidental indication of the historical
ramifications of the passage. Proper
names serve to tie the revelation to historic reality and validity. It calls for literal
interpretation. The Lord chose Zadok
when He set aside the house of Eli. It was
at the time of Solomon, who deposed the
family of Ithamar from the priesthood,
because Abiathar had joined the rebellion
of Adonijah. See I Kings 1:7 and 2:26,
27. For other references to the sons of
Zadok in this prophecy compare 43:19;
44:15; 48:11. This division of the chapter concludes with the altar, the actual
center and focal point of the entire sanctuary, memorial of Christ's sacrifice.
5. The Porch. 48, 49
Then he brought me to the porch of the
house, and measured each post of the porch,
five cubits on this side, and five cubits on that
side: and the breadth of the gate was three
cubits on this side, and three cubits on that
side. The length of the porch was twenty
cubits, and the breadth eleven cubits; even by
the steps whereby they went up to it: and
there were pillars by the posts, one on this
side, and another on that side.
17
The prophet continues to set forth detail after detail, so that the difficulty becomes increasingly greater to interpret
the whole in a figurative manner, in
which case the abundance of minute details is worthless and meaningless. The
intention appears to be to indicate that
the porch of the sanctuary resembled that
of the Solomonic temple. The pillars, too,
correspond to Jachin and Boaz of Solomon's temple (1 Kings 7:21). There is
no need to introduce here a thinly veiled
paganism, as some seek to do, by relating
these pillars to the obelisks which were
placed before Egyptian temples.
The Worth of the Work of Christ
Throughout the Scriptures God has
made it clear what infinite value He
places upon the work of His blessed Son,
the Messiah of Israel. No detail is too
much if it will serve to underscore the
limitless worth of Christ's redemptive
work. Why should this not be so in our
thinking as well? And if it is, we shall not
rest until the message gets out to the lost
sheep of the house of Israel. It is the
urgent call of the hour.

GENERAL INFORMATION
THE AMERICAN BOARD OF MISSIONS TO
THE JEWS is a missionary society incorporated under the laws of the State of New
York, to promulgate the Gospel of the Lord
Jesus Christ among the Jews. It had its inception in 1894 when Leopold Cohn, then
recently converted from rabbinical Judaism,
in obedience to the call of God, and in full
dependence upon Him for support, established the beginnings of the present work.
OBJECT—To reach the entire field of world
Jewry. Mission stations are established in
such important Jewish centers as may be in
greatest need of a Gospel testimony, consistent with the Lord's will as evidenced through
His provision of workers and funds.
FIELD MISSIONARIES. The work of evangelizing the Jews is further being accomplished by Field Missionaries who come into
personal contact with Jews.

growing importance and one in which we
have been the pioneers for many years past,
is the use of letters, tracts, Gospels, and Testaments mailed to lists of Jews in practically
every city and many towns of the United
States. The Shepherd of Israel, published
monthly in Yiddish and English has a circulation among Jews in all parts of the world.
THE GOSPEL BY RADIO. Broadcasts are
now maintained in the United States ("The
Chosen People Broadcast") and Canada.
Stations are being added as funds permit.
STUDENTS IN TRAINING. Continually, we
have Jewish Christian students who have
given evidence, first of the new birth; secondly, of a definite call for service in the
Lord's work; and thirdly, of outstanding talents and leadership for the work. These we
are supporting in various Bible schools
throughout the country, and these form the
reserves behind the lines to whom we may
look for reinforcements for the days to come.
