Coteaching - Investigative Primary Science with Student Teachers Why does coteaching work? – Lesson transcript T=Teacher ST=Student Teacher C=Child P2 class (5/6 year olds) T: Everybody listen for a second, sit down so that everybody will be able to see… ST: I’m going to test you all today….who can remember the parts of the flower? I’m going to take these all down (labels on a picture of a sun flower) and jumble them up. I’m going to start with Shane, what are these things called, the things that go down into the soil? They are the first things that grow…. T: Listen to the sound of the start of the word…r, roo… C: Roots ST: Very good, roots T: Aisling…what’s this big long part here? C: The stem. ST: Galen, these two things here… C: Leaves. ST: Good boy! What about this thing here? C: The bud. ST: And this? C: The petals. ST: Good girl. Does anybody know another name for the petals? C: The flower. ST: Good girl, the flower. Now what are the roots for? C: For sucking up the water. ST: And the stem? C: Keeping it steady T: What were you going to say Mark? C: Holding it down. T: Yes, it keeps it steady and in the ground. ST: What does the stem do? C: When you pour water in it goes up into the root… ST: So what is the stem for? T: Jack, what do you think? C: The stem holds the flower and the leaves. ST: Good! That’s right C: And the buds C: The roots suck up the water go into the stem and the flower. Student shows the children a diagram of the lifecycle of the flower. ST: Do you remember what we called this? T: This is a hard one, remember how the word starts off….li, li, life… C: Life-cycle ST: What does it show us? C: It shows you what happens to the flower… ST: Yes, will we let Sarah do it….So what comes first? C: Seed… ST: And then what comes out of the seed? C: Roots… ST: And what comes out of the top? C: Bud? T: Sh..Sh… C: Shoot! ST: If we have the shoot coming up, what comes next? C: Stem? C: Bud? ST: Yes, the bud comes next….and what comes out of the bud? C: Flower. T: That’s right, good boy! C: Miss Donnelly I see a book there and I know what it’s called. ST: What’s it called? C: Growing.
